  • Due to the rapidly aging population, the death rate of elderly people by safety accidents has been increasing. In particular, precautions are needed for falls prevention because they either directly or indirectly cause death. In the case of elderly people, most of the fall accidents occur in dense residential areas, and particularly, the staircase poses a risk of falling. Therefore, a safety assessment should be performed from the design phase. However, in general, staircases are designed using existing stair data or only aims to satisfy the installation criteria. Laws and regulations only define minimum requirements for safety, so it is not possible to prevent fall accidents even if they satisfy the requirements. Therefore, this study proposes a simulation-based method for evaluating the safety of staircases. The behavioral characteristics of the elderly are implemented to an virtual user in a virtual space including staircases, and fall accidents are evaluated by the evaluation logic related to the behavioral characteristics. The result shows that the safety of staircases can be preevaluated and reflected on the design to reduce the possibility of fall accidents of the elderly.

  • In Japan, a lot of elderly housing types have been developed in order to meet various needs of the older person and the change of social situations. Elderly housings can be divided into three categories elderly housings for healthy older persons, elderly care homes for the healthy and elderly care facilities for the unhealthy. Elderly housings include public and private rental housings. Sometimes they can be designated only for the elderly. Elderly care homes for the healthy elderly include full fee charging elderly housing, elderly homes, low fee charging elderly homes and care houses. Elderly care facilities for the unhealthy elderly consist of full fee charging elderly care homes, group homes for the dementia, elderly health facilities, nursing homes, elderly hospitals, and so on. However "elderly care facilities" have been proved not to be efficient for the delivery of elderly welfare services nor satisfactory to the frail older person. Therefore, based on the concept of the "Normalization", daily services have been provided for the elderly in order that they can live at their own home in the community for themselves. As a result, Japan aims not only to reduce elderly welfare expenses but also to increase elderly users' satisfaction. Emphasis on non-institutionalization and in-home services, regional characterization, harmony between Hard and Soft, user oriented services, substantiality, universal design and so on are sought for the sake of those goals.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the user characteristics in different age groups by investigating the level of satisfaction and preference of design and function of mobile phone. 160 subjects participated in the experiment. Subjects with different ages were selected and divided into four groups: young age group (20 to less than 45), $1^{st}$ middle age group (45 to less than 55), $2^{nd}$ middle age group(55 to less than 65), and elderly group(over 65). A questionnaire was developed based on the previous design guideline, and additional questions were made to test newly developed function and design of the mobile phone. In particular, depth interviews were conducted in order to have a proper response from old subjects who have difficulties in completing written questionnaire. In result, it was found that except for price the major criterion to purchase mobile phone was the design, and the function of phone was the next except for elderly group. In the case of elderly group, the screen size is the first. Statistical results indicated that 37.5% of the young age group, 22.5% of $1^{st}$ middle age group, 22.5% of $2^{nd}$ middle age group and 10.0% of the elderly group preferred the design to function when they purchase mobile phones. Most elderly people were not satisfied with the supplementary function of the mobile phone. The $1^{st}$ middle age group did not know exactly how to use the supplementary service although they were willing to use it. Regarding the emotional preference on the type of phone, the sliding type was preferred most. Current results can be used to anticipate the future trend of mobile phone and design a user-friendly product for the aged population.

  • As part of alternative of elderly problems in the future super-aging society, this study aims to extract an improvement plan of interior environment design of Seoul-type day care centers to expand in future by observing day care centers as medical and healing environments, from the perspective of user experience. For this study, after selecting major activity areas of representative cases of Seoul-type day care centers, user behaviors in the space were observed and 4 seniors of baby-boom generation who are potential uses were chosen as personas by reflecting characteristics of healthy elderly, physical aging, mental aging and infirm elderly, from the perspective of user experience. Based on previous studies on healing environments, these characteristics and demands of personas were classified into environmental aspects, physical aspects and mental aspects to extract an improvement plan. The study results are as follows. First, interior environment design reflecting persona characteristics helps the elderly adapt to the environment and provides a comfortable environment like home for stability, treatment and recovery of memory. Second, interior environment design reflecting persona characteristics helps psychological healing through light entering the large windows and natural environment elements. Third, for interior environment design reflecting persona characteristics, finish materials with bright and soft colors should be used to change the images of facilities positively. Fourth, spatial composition should be remedied through division of space and built-in furniture depending on the needs of users for loitering of extra time and programs.

  • As rate in an elderly population and expanding their range of activity rapidly increase, the demographics of the elderly population on a use of transportation also rise. Elderly pedestrians often find it difficult to react promptly to the traffic accidents as they are less perceptive of the dangers present under the situation. More than half of the elderly traffic accidents are elderly pedestrian accidents in road. Therefore, we design and implement smart safety hat for safety of elderly pedestrian. The smart safety hat binds stripe-shaped LED around a hat in order for a driver to perceive pedestrian easy and quickly. Features of smart safety hat include controlling the number of LEDs by using a light sensor and warning through vibration using a sound sensor. Also, we used Bluetooth to communicate with the smartphone to enable user customization of the light and numbers of LEDs.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the facility standards of the elderly welfare facilities applying the seven principles of the universal design. The facility standards of the elderly welfare facilities were limited to the provisions of the "Enforcement Regulation of the Elderly Welfare Act". There are few legal regulations applying the universal design in the construction of the elderly welfare facilities. The facility standards are set only with the minimum requirements such as securing the safety of the user, securing the space area, functional convenience, and risk prevention. However, the contents of the regulations are limited to the minimum standards for functional convenience and safety required for living. In conclusion, in the elderly welfare facilities, the notion of universal design, which considers not only the elderly, but also service providers, employees, and general visitors, should be considered.
