To investigate the actual management condition of group homes for the elderly and their living environment, four group homes and 26 elderly people living in the group home were surveyed. As the results, the relationships between the administrator and the elderly were acceptable, but the group homes seem suffer from insufficient administrative supports. The most required service in the group homes was a conversational partner service. Moreover, the most satisfactory point for the elderly living in group homes was the settlement of food, clothing, and housing. The unsatisfactory things were the service related to medical, leisure, and house work and an invasion of their private life. The resident elderly in group homes were fully satisfied with their living environment including the relationship with the manager and the people in the facility. They, however, do not have much chance to make an exchange with their neighbor. Overall, the elderly want to stay continuously in the group homes where they are living current.
This study is about the ‘paradigm’ which works as a theoretical base for planning and managing elderly housing. For this purpose, this study surveyed published research works, and analysed the contents and the paradigms of the researches. This is based on the literature survey, and surveyed 66 research works published in the last 8 years. The result of the survey tells us that almost all of the research works done by Korean scholars are based on the rational approach to the design of elderly housing. They emphasize ‘functional rationalism’ ‘technical perfection’ ‘reasonable program’ ‘economy and market’, etc. However, such qualities as‘character of human being’ ‘depth of existence’ ‘identity of culture’ ‘speciality of place’are not emphasized. This means that paradigms used by Korean scholars are biased, and are far from the plural culture characterizing 21 st century. This study, therefore, analysed new paradigms appeared on the recent research works about housing environment, and suggests several new paradigms which would be essential for future planning of elderly housing.
Despite the substantial increase of the elderly population in Korea, welfare policies such as housing programs have not been developed enough to meet the diverse needs of the aging people. Particularly, caring for elderly dementia patients is becoming a serious social problem in Korean society. Families are still primarily responsible for taking care of the elderly dementia patients, and thus are suffering from tremendous caregiving burdens. In many Western countries, group homes, which are small-scale care facilities with home-like atmosphere, have become common housing alternatives for elderly dementia patients. Group homes effectively create a therapeutic environment while helping reduce the elder care burdens for the families. This article proposes to review group homes as a housing option for the elderly with dementia in Korea. The purpose of this article is to make suggestions for housing policies, separately or as a part of more general welfare policies. Based on the questionnaire survey conducted on 912 persons currently residing in Seoul and five different provinces, various possible policies and suggestions to promote establishing group homes and other facilities for elderly dementia patients are discussed in this article.

In general, the preferred residential environmental characteristics of the elderly housing complex change with the situation of old age. This suggests various elderly housing should be considered as the situation of old age develops.

For this purpose, at the previous study which was the first stage of this study, UT home services by each elderly household based on spouse, income level, and health status were identified and this study finally proposed UT home services by each elderly household type according to residents' level of needs for UT home services. One to one interview with a structured survey questionnaire and illustration was implemented and 204 older residents who were composed of one of six elderly household types were responded. Among 6 types of elderly households, type 2 and 6 were the groups which had higher needs for various kinds of UT home services. Economic status and their health status were the key factors to determine their needs for UT home services. Type 4 and 7 were the groups to express their lower needs for UT home services due to their lower income level and good health condition. Recently, there had been considerable changes in our society in terms of the level where elderly people can experience the potential in their quality of life and demand for better life. Therefore, new alternative for elderly housing responding the physical, psychological and social demand of the contemporary elderly. For this, there needs to find out preference of the elderly on their living environment. The purpose of this study is to find out the elderly preference on living arrangement via small group workshop, to propose a sustainable housing option. The workshop allowed step by step responses along with additional information about living arrangement possibility. The findings were, most participants wanted to "age in place" when they are still healthy. And some in care facility is inferior later life period. As the elderly population increases, concerns for the elderly's welfare become greater both quantitatively and qualitatively. In order to give a chance for the elderly to live in familiar dwelling and regional context to which they are accustomed, and to participate in their society actively, it is of great importance that suitable living spaces must be provided for the elderly. The practical ways of providing people with good living environment and its easy maintenance for healthy and valuable lives were discussed in this paper. This research is designed to propose pertinent policies related to social issues concerning the elderly. 137 seniors over 60 living in Gwanaju city were sampled and surveyed. The scope of planning for the elderly's lifestyle and welfare is divided into two parts, one is planning of space for the realization of stable and spacious dwellings and another is urban environment planning capable of supporting healthy and affluent lifestyles. Also, the realization of stable housing, the construction of urban structure for a healthy life, and the provision of barrier-free living conditions are investigated. For increasing the degree of stabilization and improvement for the elderly's life, self-governing bodies should grasp the demands of living condition and spatial requirements by taking the lifestyles of the elderly into account in urban or regional levels. Then, a master plan including development, improvement, execution, and maintenance of proper housing facilities and urban environments should be made for the best results.
