Fracture resistance(J-R) curves, which are used for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analyses, are known to be dependent on the specimen geometry. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of crack tip constraint an the J-R curves in CT specimens. Fracture toughness tests on CT specimens with varying planform size were performed and test results showed that the J-R curves were increased with an increase in the planform size. Finite element analysis were also performed and the numerical results showed that this experimental phenomenon was probably due to the relaxation of crack tip constraint resulting from the stress triaxiality.
In the present study, the fracture toughness of U-shaped notches made of aluminum alloy Al7075-T6 under combined tension/out-of-plane shear loading conditions (mixed mode I/III) is studied by theoretical and experimental methods. In the experimental part, U-notched test samples are loaded using a previously developed fixture under mixed mode I/III loading and their load-carrying capacity (LCC) is measured. Then, due to the presence of considerable plasticity in the notch vicinity at crack initiation instance, using the Equivalent Material Concept (EMC) and with the help of the point stress (PS) and mean stress (MS) brittle failure criteria, the LCC of the tested samples is predicted theoretically. The EMC equates a ductile material with a virtual brittle material in order to avoid performing elastic-plastic analysis. Because of the very good match between the EMC-PS and EMC-MS combined criteria with the experimental results, the use of the combination of the criteria with EMC is recommended for designing U-notched aluminum plates in engineering structures. Meanwhile, because of nearly the same accuracy of the two criteria and the simplicity of the PS criterion relations, the use of EMC-PS failure model in design of notched Al7075-T6 components is superior to the EMC-MS criterion.

The magnitude of constraint effect $A_2$ values on the non-linear elastic plastic fracture toughness was experimentally estimated by using displacement at various measuring positions near crack tip. Constraint effect $A_2$ value was dependent on specimen configuration and on the measured displacement near crack front. The crack tip opening displacement in the vicinity of the crack tip front should be estimated within plastic region when appropriately constraint effect was calculated. It was found that the magnitude of constrain effect |$A_2$| is below 8.0 at the crack tip. But an appropriate location to measure the effective constraint effects $A_2$ at the critical value of J that crack initiation is characterizable by is r = 2mm and ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$ away from original crack tip, and the constraint effect |$A_2$| estimated is 5.3.
The magnitude of constraint effect $A_{2}$ values were experimentally estimated using displacement according to measuring positions on the non-linear elastic plastic fracture toughness estimate. For 25.4 mm thickness SS400 steel CT specimen, constraint effect $A_{2}$ values we re dependent on specimen configuration and on measured displacement near crack front. Commonly, Estimating constraint effect $A_{2}$ measuring position for displacement should be existed inside plastic region. Therefore, the ${\delta}_{5}$ method was not reliable for evaluation of constraint effect $A_{2}$ values because measuring position for displacement is in elastic region at crack growth initiation in this paper.

This paper investigates the effects of T-stress and plastic hardening mismatch on the interfacial crack-tip stress field via finite element analyses. Plane strain elastic-plastic crack-tip fields are modeled with both MBL formulation and a full SEC specimen under pure bending. Modified Prandtl slip line fields illustrate the effects of T-stress on crack-tip constraint in homogeneous material. Compressive T-stress substantially reduces the interfacial crack-tip constraint, but increases the J-contribution by lower hardening material, J$\_$L/. For bimaterials with two elastic-plastic materials, increasing plastic hardening mismatch increases both crack-tip stress constraint in the lower hardening material and J$\_$L/. The fracture toughness for bimaterial joints would consequently be much lower than that of lower hardening homogeneous material. The implication of unbalanced J-integral in bimaterials is also discussed.

Indentation and small punch tests are very powerful methods to monitor the materials reliability since they are very simple, easy and almost non-destructive. First, recently-developed continuous indentation test can provide the more material properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, yield strength, work-hardening exponent, etc., than the conventional hardness test. In our study, the true stress-strain curve was derived from the indentation load-depth curve for spherical indentation. In detail, the strain was able to be obtained from plastic depth/contact radius ratio, and the flow stress was from mean contact pressure through the analysis of elastic-plastic indentation stress field. Secondly, the small punch test was studied to evaluate the fracture toughness and defomation properties such as elastic modulus and yield strength. Like the indentation test, this test can be applied without severe damage of the target structure.

The hydrogen embrittlement of metallic materials is an important issue from the viewpoint of structural integrity. In this regard, the estimation of mechanical properties and fracture toughness under hydrogen conditions provides very important data. This study provides an experimental validation of the approach for simulating the small punch of Inconel 617 using finite element damage analysis, as recently proposed by the authors, and applies an inverse method for the determination of the constitutive tensile behavior of materials. The mechanical properties obtained from the inverse method are compared with those obtained from the tensile test and validated. The mechanical properties and fracture toughness are predicted by using the inverse method and finite element damage analysis.
The evaluation of the elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1C}$ was performed on the center of weld metal(CWM), the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal (BM) of API 5LB steel pipes welded by the high frequency electric resistance welding. The $J_{1C}$ was evaluated by the JSME R-Curve and JSME SZW methods using the smooth and side-grooved specimens. The results are as follows; (1) The $J_{1C}$ values by the SZW method are overestimated as compared with those by the R-curve method, because the micro-crack is formed as SZW increase with the deformation at SZ after initiation of the ductile crack. (2) The everage of $J_{1C}$ values by the the R-curve and the SZW methods in side-grooved specimens tended to decrease in comparison with smooth specimens 9.42% at CWM, 4.2% at HAZ, 23.2% at BM, respectively. (3) The boundary of the fatigue pre-crack, stretched zone, and dimple regions appeared more clearly in side-grooved specimens, for the slight change of SZW in the direction of the plate thickness, as compared with smooth specimens.

Elastic-plastic fracture mechanics is popularly used for integrity evaluation of major components, however, it is not easy to extract standard specimens from operating facility. This paper examines how ductile fracture toughness is characterized by a small punch testing technique in conjunction with finite element analyses incorporating a damage model. At first, micro-mechanical parameters constituting Rousselier model are calibrated for typical nuclear materials using both estimated and experimental load-displacement (P-$\delta$) curves of miniaturized specimens. Then, fracture resistance (J-R) curves of relatively larger standard CT specimens are predicted by finite element analyses employing the calibrated parameters and compared with corresponding experimental ones. It was proven that estimated results by the proposed method using small punch specimen is promising and might be used as a useful tool for ductile crack growth evaluation.
Five Al2O3/SiC/metal composites with four different particle sizes of green SiC abrasive grains are grown by the directed oxidation of an commercially available Al-alloy. Oxidation was conducted in air at 100$0^{\circ}C$, 96 hours long. Slip casted SiC-fillers were placed on the alloy or SiC powder deposited up to the required layer thickness. Their microstructures are described and measurements of density, elastic constants, frexural strength, fracture toughness and work of fracture are reported. The results are compared with those of commercial dense sintered Al2O3. The properties of produced materials have a strong relationship to not only the properties of Al2O3, SiC, Al and Si but also to the phase share and phase distribution. The composite materials are dense (0.5% porosity), tough (KIC = 3.4~6.4 MPa{{{{ SQRT { m} }}), strong ({{{{ sigma }}B = 170~345 MPa) and reasonably shrinkage free producible. The reinforcements is attained mainly through the plastic deformation of ductile metal phase.
