  • The method of JSME S001-83 and ASTM E813-87 have been adapted for evaluation of the elastic-plastic fracture toughness J sub(IC) of SB41 steel. This SB41 steel have the characteristics of low-stength CT specimens. The test results obtained have been considered and compared on the basis of resulted data from two kinds of methods(JSME S001-83, ASTM E813-87) and two kinds of specimen configurations(smooth, side-grooved). On the basis of results from consideration and comparison, the difficulties for its application were presented in case when the standard ASTM E813-87 method was employed for the measurement of J sub(IC) in SB41 steel. A modified method was applied for measuring J sub(IC) in SB41 steel that it used the blunting line real-measured by experiment instead of the standard blunting line theoretically determined, and the result from that procedure was analyzed and the usefulness of that method was examined and considered.

  • In hard and brittle materials as advanced ceramics indented by a hard indenter, the indenter's transition radius, was defined as critical radius which distinguishes the occurrence of the first plastic deformation from the elastic cracking as the first damaging event, is analytically and experimentally investigated. The analytical result is shown that the critical load, which not enlarge pre-existing cracks as the form of median crack beneath a indenter, is constant, and is determined by the order of $k_{IC}$$^{4}$ $P_{Y}$$^{3}$(where, $K_{IC}$ , $P_{Y}$are the fracture toughness of materials and the applied pressure by indenting, respectively). And the size of transiton radii were experimentally obtained with the similar values to the analytical results.lts..

  • Cast stainless steel may experience embrittlement when it is exposed approximately to 300$\^{C}$ for a long period. In the present investigation, the three classes of the thermally-aged CF8M specimen were prepared using an artificially-accelerated aging method. After the specimens were held for 300, 1800 and 3600hrs. at 430$\^{C}$, respectively, the specimens were quenched in water which is at room temperature. Load versus load line displacement curves and J-R curves were obtained using the unloading compliance method. talc values were obtained using the ASTM E813-87 and ASTM E 813-81 methods. In addition to these methods, talc values were obtained using the SZW (stretch zone width) method described in JSME S 001-1981. The results of the unloading compliance method are J$\_$Q/=543.9kJ/㎡ for virgin materials. The values of J$\_$IC/ for the degraded materials at 300, 1800 and 3600hrs. are obtained 369.25kJ/㎡, 311.02kJ/㎡, 276.7kJ/㎡, respectively. The results obtained by the SZW method are compared with those obtained by the unloading compliance method. Both results are quite similar. Through the elastic-plastic fracture toughness test, it is found that the value of loc is decreased with an increase of the aging time.

  • In this study, theoretical stress field analysis near the crack tip under tension-compression loading was performed. The results of the theoretical stress analysis were compared to the results of Finite Element Method(FEM). From this study, generation of tensile residual stress at crack tip was proved after 1-cycle of tension-compression loading, and the fracture toughness and the fracture load of a structure can be decreased by the residual stress.

  • In composite materials, the fracture perpendicular to the fiber direction usually shows a non-linear behavior accompannying blunting and plastic deformation around the crack tip. In this study, the fracture thoughness in random short fiber SMC composite material and Carbon/Epoxy composite material is estimated by the A.M.(Area Method) and the G.L.M.(Generalized Locus Method) which can determine a stable total energy release rate(G$_T$) not only in highly elghly elastic material but also in highly non-linear materials.

  • The quantitative assessment of the effect of the residual stress on fracture behavior was executed by some experiment and numerical analysis. First of all, artificial residual stresses were imposed on CT(Compact Tension) specimens by local heating using gas torch, and an appropriate distribution of residual stresses was obtained by thermal elastic-plastic FE analysis. To certify the result of the FE analysis, an experimental measurement was performed in accordance with ASTM standard. Fracture toughness test was executed on the several types of specimens. The first type was the specimen without residual stresses, and the others had different peak value of compressive residual stress at crack front via controlling the heat flux. All the test results were presented on th J resistance(JR) curves and discussed to verify the effect of compressive residual stresses on fracture behavior.

  • In this paper, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis is performed to determine the critical crack sizes of the multipurpose canister (MPC) manufactured using austenitic stainless steel under dynamic loading conditions that simulate drop accidents. Firstly, dynamic finite element (FE) analysis is performed using Abaqus v.2018 with the KORAD (Korea Radioactive Waste Agency)-21 model under two drop accident conditions. Through the FE analysis, critical locations and through-thickness stress distributions in the MPC are identified, where the maximum plastic strain occurs during impact loadings. Then, the evaluation using the failure assessment diagram (FAD) is performed by postulating an external surface crack at the critical location to determine the critical crack depth. It is found that, for the drop cases considered in this paper, the principal failure mechanism for the circumferential surface crack is found to be the plastic collapse due to dominant high bending axial stress in the thickness. For axial cracks, the plastic collapse is also the dominant failure mechanism due to high membrane hoop stress, followed by the ductile tearing analysis. When incorporating the strain rate effect on yield strength and fracture toughness, the critical crack depth increases from 10 to 20%.

  • In a primary reactor cooling system(RCS), a dissimilar weld zone exists between cast stainless steel(CF8M) in a pipe and low-alloy steel(SA508 cl.3) in a nozzle. Thermal aging is observed in CF8M as the RCS is exposed for a long period of time to a reactor operating temperature between 290 and $330^{\circ}C$, while no effect is observed in SA508 cl.3. The specimens are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique maintained for 300, 1800 and 3600 hrs at $430^{\circ}C$, respectively. The specimens for elastic-plastic fracture toughness tests are according to the process in the thermal notch is created in the heat affected zone(HAZ) of CF8M and deposited zone. From the experiments, the $J_{IC}$ value notched in HAZ of CF8M presented a rapid decrease up to 300 hours at $430^{\circ}C$ and slowly decreased according to the process in the thermal aging time. Also, the $J_{IC}$ value presented a lower value than that of the CF8M base metal. And, the $J_{IC}$ of the deposited zone presented the lowest value of all other cases.

  • Safety and integrity are required for reactor pressure vessels because they are operated in high temperature. There are single specimen method multiple specimen method and load ratio analysis method which used as evaluation of safety and integrity for reactor pressure vessels. In this study the fracture resistance curve(J-R curve) elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_{IC}$) and material tearing modulus ($T_{mat}$) of SA 508 class 3 alloy steel used as reactor pressure vessel steel are measured and evaluated at room temperature 20$0^{\circ}C$ and 30$0^{\circ}C$ according to unloading compliance method and load ration analysis method. And then the comparison with experimental $J_{IC}$ and theoretical$J_{IC}$ by local fracture strain is managed.

  • The present work reviews the methods to evaluate elastic-plastic material characteristics by indentation tests. Especially the representative stress and strain values used in some papers are critically analyzed. The values should not only represent the load-depth curve, but also represent the whole of deformed material around the impression. We briefly introduce other indentation techniques to evaluate residual stresses, creep properties, and fracture toughness. We also review some technical problems that are related to the accuracy issues in indentation tests.
