  • This study examined the changes in the mechanical properties of coral concrete under different coconut fiber admixtures. To accomplish this goal, the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and elastic modulus properties of coral concrete blocks reinforced with coconut fibers were measured. The results showed that the addition of coconut fiber had little effect on the cube and axial compressive strengths. With increasing coconut fiber content, the flexural strength and splitting tensile strength of the concrete changed substantially, first by increasing and then by decreasing, with maximum increases of 36.0% and 12.8%, respectively; additionally, the addition of coconut fibers resulted in a failure type with some ductility. When the coconut fiber-reinforced coral concrete was 7 days old, it reached approximately 74% of its maximum strength. The addition of coconut fiber did not affect the early strength of the coral concrete mixed with seawater. When the amount of coconut fiber was no more than 3 kg/m3, the resulting concrete elastic modulus decreased only slightly from that of a similar concrete without coconut fiber, and the maximum decrease was 5.4%. The optimal dose of coconut fiber was 3 kg/m3 in this study.

  • The elastic modulus of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) can be evaluated by using composite models with experiment. In this study, Hashin's composite model was adapted to evaluate elastic modulus considering physical properties of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) that mortar is attached. Elastic modulus testes for cement paste, mortar and recycled coarse aggregate concrete were carried out considering W/C and recycled coarse aggregate content rate. As a result, the elastic modulus of RAC was evaluated comparing with both experiment results and the existing estimation formula. Those can be used for further studies as a preliminary data.

  • The geometric and elastic models based on the unit cell have been proposed to predict the geometric characteristics and the engineering constants of plain and satin woven composites. In the geometric model, length and inclined angle of the yarn crimp and the fiber volume fraction of woven composites have been predicted. In the elastic model, the coordinate transformation has been utilized to transform the elastic constants of the yarn crimp to those of woven composites, and the effective elastic constants have been determined from the volume averaging of the constituent materials. Good correlations between the model predictions and the experimental results of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy woven composites have been observed. Based on the model, the effect of various geometric parameters and materials on the three-dimensional elastic properties of woven composites can be identified.

  • It is recently well recognized that the technique for the one-sided stress wave velocity measurement in structural materials provides measurement in structural materials provides valuable information on the state of the material such as quality, uniformity, location of cracked or damaged area. This technique is especially effective to measure velocities of longitudinal and Rayleigh waves when access to only one surface of structure is possible. However, one of problems for one-sided stress wave velocity measurement is to get consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave. In this study, the laser based surface elastic wave was used to provide consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave into the materials. The velocities of creeping wave and Rayleigh wave in materials were measured by the one-sided technique using laser based surface elastic wave. These wave velocities were compared with bulk wave velocities such as longitudinal wave and shear wave velocities to certify accuracy of measurement. In addition, the mechanical properties such as poisson's ratio and specific modulus(E/p) were calculated with the velocities of surface elastic waves.

  • This article investigates vibration behavior of magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) nanobeams embedded in two-parameter elastic foundation using a third-order parabolic shear deformation beam theory. Material properties of MEE-FG nanobeam are supposed to be variable throughout the thickness based on power-law model. Based on Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory which captures the small size effects and using the Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal governing equations of motions are derived and then solved analytically. Then the influences of elastic foundation, magnetic potential, external electric voltage, nonlocal parameter, power-law index and slenderness ratio on the frequencies of the embedded MEE-FG nanobeams are studied.

  • In this work, transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses of an infinite functionally graded piezoelectric (FGPE) plate whose upper surface suffers time-dependent thermal shock are investigated in the context of different thermo-piezo-elastic theories. The thermal and mechanical properties of functionally graded piezoelectric plate under consideration are expressed as power functions of plate thickness variable. The solution of problem is obtained by solving the corresponding finite element governing equations in time domain directly. Transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses of the FGPE plate, including temperature, stress, displacement, electric intensity and electric potential are presented graphically and analyzed carefully to show multi-field coupling behaviors between them. In addition, the effects of functionally graded parameters on transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses are also investigated to provide a theoretical basis for the application of the FGPE materials.

  • Structural pipe-in-pipe cross-sections have significant potential for application in offshore oil and gas production systems because of their property that combines insulation performance with structural strength in an integrated way. Such cross-sections comprise inner and outer thin walled pipes with the annulus between them fully filled by a selectable thick filler material to impart an appropriate combination of properties. Structural pipe-in-pipe cross-sections can exhibit several different collapse mechanisms and the basis of the preferential occurrence of one over others is of interest. This paper presents an elastic analyses of a structural pipe-in-pipe cross-section when subjected to external hydrostatic pressure. It formulates and solves the static and elastic buckling problem using the variational principle of minimum potential energy. The paper also investigates a simplified formulation of the problem where the outer pipe and its contact with the filler material is considered as a 'pipe on an elastic foundation'. Results are presented to show the variation of elastic buckling pressure with the relative elastic modulus of the filler and pipe materials, the filler thickness and the thicknesses of the inner and outer pipes. The range of applicability of the simplified 'pipe on an elastic foundation' analysis is also presented. A brief review of the types of materials that could be used as the filler is combined with the results of the analysis to draw conclusions about elastic buckling behaviour of structural pipe-in-pipe cross-sections.

  • Perfobond rib connectors are widely used in composite structures to achieve the composite action between the steel and the concrete, and empirical expressions for their strength and secant stiffness have been obtained by numerical simulations or push-out tests. Since perfobond connections are generally in an elastic state in the service process and the structural analysis are always based on the elastic properties of the members, the secant stiffness is not applicable for the normal structural analysis. However, the tangent stiffness of perfobond connections has not been introduced in previous studies. Moreover, the perfobond connections are bearing tension and shear force simultaneously when the composite beams subjected to torque or local loads, but the current studies fail to arrive at the elastic stiffness considering the combined effects. To resolve these discrepancies, this paper investigates the initial elastic stiffness of perfobond connections under combined forces. The calculation method for the elastic stiffness of perfobond connections is analyzed, and the contributions of the perfobond rib, the perforating rebar and the concrete dowel are investigated. A finite element method was verified with a high value of correlation for the test results. Afterwards, parametric studies are carried out using the reliable finite element analysis to explore the trends of several factors. Empirical equations for predicting the initial elastic stiffness of perfobond connections are proposed by the numerical regression of the data extracted by parametric studies. The equations agree well with finite element analysis and test results, which indicates that the proposed empirical equations reflect a high accuracy for predicting the initial elastic stiffness of perfobond connections.

  • Properties of agricultural products are important for engineering design and analysis with respect to their mechanical harvesting, handling, transporting and processing. Researcher have presented the data of properties for various kinds of agricultural products. These data, however, are obtained from the materials produced in foreign countries, and a very few data could be found in Korea. In this paper, emphasis put on the importance of measuring the properties of agricultural products through an extensive review of literatures, and some experimental results on the viscoelastic and elastic properties of the materials are presented. Viscoelastic characteristics of some agricultural materials, specifically the force-deformation-time relationship of the whole orange and cylindrical samples of cheese under different types of loading were investigated. In elastic test, the response of apple during an impact and the relationships among various parameters such u degree of damage, drop height and absorbed energy were determined.
