  • In this work, an elastic-plastic stress analysis has been conducted for silicon carbide fiber reinforced magnesium metal matrix composite beam. The composite beam has a rectangular cross section. The beam is cantilevered and is loaded by a single force at its free end. In solution, the composite beam is assumed perfectly plastic to simplify the investigation. An analytical solution is presented for the elastic-plastic regions. In order to verify the analytic solution results were compared with the finite element method. An rectangular element with nine nodes has been choosen. Composite plate is meshed into 48 elements and 228 nodes with simply supported and in-plane loading condations. Predictions of the stress distributions of the beam using finite elements were overall in good agreement with analytic values. Stress distributions of the composite beam are calculated with respect to its fiber orientation. Orientation angles of the fiber are chosen as $0^{circ},\;30^{circ},\;45^{circ},\;60^{circ}\;and\;90^{circ}$. The plastic zone expands more at the upper side of the composite beam than at the lower side for $30^{circ},\;45^{circ}\;and\;60^{circ}$ orientation angles. Residual stress components of ${\sigma}_{x}\;and \;{\tau}_{xy}$ are also found in the section of the composite beam.

  • Treating with step concentration of papain, round mucle of Korean cattle were cut in longitudinal and cross section and stained. Collagenous fibre and elastic fibre of its connective tissue were observed microscopically. The results were as follows: 1) In proportion to the increase of enzyme concentration amorphous bundle of collagenous fibre were loosed gradually and destroyed in the long run and besides the property of this fibre stained became remarkably weak. 2) Elastic fibre was paralleled to muscle fibre and in proportion to the increase of enzyme concentration, it was lost elasticity, loosed, straightened and broken remarkably to pieces. 3) Histological variation of collagenous fibre and elastic fibre treated with enzyme was more remarkable than control.

  • This paper presents a method of elastic-plastic analysis for planar steel frames that provides the accuracy of distributed plasticity methods with the computational efficiency that is greater than that of distributed plasticity methods but less than that of plastic-hinge based methods. This method accounts for the effect of spread of plasticity accurately without discretization through the cross-section of a beam-column element, which is achieved by the following procedures. First, nonlinear equations describing the relationships between generalized stresses and strains of the cross-section are derived analytically. Next, nonlinear force-deformation relationships for the beam-column element are obtained through lengthwise integration of the generalized strains. Elastic-plastic flexibility coefficients are then calculated by differentiating the above element force-deformation relationships. Finally, an elastic-plastic stiffness matrix is obtained by making use of the flexibility-stiffness transformation. Adding the conventional geometric stiffness matrix to the elastic-plastic stiffness matrix results in the tangent stiffness matrix, which can readily be used to evaluate the load carrying capacity of steel frames following standard nonlinear analysis procedures. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by several examples that are sensitive to the effect of spread of plasticity.

  • In literature for thin-walled sections with L, [, +, I, and ${\Box}$- shapes the approximate torsion equations for stiffness are used which were proposed by Bach (Hsu 1984), p.30. New formulae for torsional stiffness of bars with L, [, +, I, and ${\Box}$ cross section valid not only for thin-walled sections are presented in this paper. These formulae are obtained by appropriate polynomial approximation of stiffness results obtained by means of method of fundamental solutions. On the base of obtained results the validity of Bach's formulae are verified when cross section is not thin-walled.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) has been generally accepted by civil engineers as an alternative for steel reinforcing bars (rebar) due to its advantageous specific tensile strength and non-corrosiveness. Even though some glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars are available on a market, GFRP is still somewhat uncompetitive over steel rebar due to their high cost and relatively low elastic modulus, and brittle failure characteristic. If the price of component materials of GFRP rebar is not reduced, it would be another solution to increase the performance of each material to the highest degree. The tensile strength generally decreases with increasing diameter of FRP rebar. One of the reasons is that only fibers except for fibers in center resist the external force due to the lack of force transfer and the deformation of only outer fibers by gripping system. Eliminating fibers in the center, which do not play an aimed role fully, are helpful to reduce the price and finally FRP rebar would be optimized over the price. In this study, the effect of the hollow section in a cross-section of a GFRP rebar was investigated. A GFRP rebar with 19 mm diameter was selected and an analysis was performed for the tensile test results. Parameter was the ratio of hollow section over solid cross-section. Four kinds of hollow sections were planned. A total of 27 specimens, six specimens for each hollow section and three specimens with a solid cross-section were manufactured and tested. The change by the ratio of hollow section over solid cross-section was analyzed and an optimized cross-section design was proposed.

  • A general structural model, which is an extension of the Vlassov theory, is developed for the analysis of composite rotor blades with elastic couplings. A comprehensive analysis applicable to both thick-and thin-walled composite beams, which can have either open- or closed profile is formulated. The theory accounts for the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, and transverse shear deformations. A semi-complementary energy functional is used to account for the shear stress distribution in the shell wall. The bending and torsion related warpings and the shear correction factors are obtained in closed form as part of the analysis. The resulting first order shear deformation theory describes the beam kinematics in terms of the axial, flap and lag bending, flap and lag shear, torsion and torsion-warping deformations. The theory is validated against experimental results for various cross-section beams with elastic couplings.

  • The roll-forming process is a highly productive incremental forming process and is suitable for manufacturing thin, high-strength steel products. Recently, this process has been considered one of the most productive processes in manufacturing high-strength steel automotive structural parts. However, it is very difficult to develop the roll-forming process when the cross-sectional shape of the product changes in the longitudinal direction. In this study, a roll-forming process for manufacturing high-strength steel automotive parts with a linearly variable symmetric hat-type cross-section was developed. The forming rolls were designed by the 3D CAD system, CATIA. Additionally, the designed forming rolls were modified by the simulation through the 3D elastic-plastic finite element analysis software, MARC. The results of the finite element analysis show that the final roll-forming roll can successfully produce the desired high-strength steel automotive part with a variable cross-section.

  • The cross sections of hollow cylindrical tubes ovalise under a pure bending condition, and this reduces their flexural stiffness as their curvatures increase. It is important to accurately evaluate this phenomenon, known as the 'Brazier effect', to understand the bending behaviour of the systems considered. However, if the tubes are supported by an elastic medium or foundation, the ovalisation displacements of their cross sections may decrease. From this point of view, the purpose of this research is to analytically investigate the bending characteristics of single- and double-walled elastic tubes contacted by an elastic material by considering the Brazier effect. The Brazier moment, which is the maximum moment-carrying capacity of the ovalised cross section, can be calculated by introducing the strain energy per unit length of the tube in terms of the degree of ovalisation for the tube and the curvature. The total strain energy of the double-walled system is the sum of the strain energies of the outer and inner tubes and that of the compliant core. Results are comparatively presented to show the variation in the degree of ovalisation and the Brazier moment for single- and double-walled tubes.

  • The compressive behavior up to failure of short concrete members reinforced with fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is investigated. Rectangular cross-sections are analysed by means of a simplified elastic model, able also to explain stress-concentration. The model allows one to evaluate the equivalent uniform confining pressure in ultimate conditions referred to the effective confined cross-section and to the effective stresses in FRP along the sides of section; consequently, it makes it possible to determine ultimate strain and the related bearing capacity of the confined member corresponding to FRP failure. The effect of local reinforcements constitute by single strips applied at corners before the continuous wrapping and the effect of round corners are also considered. Analytical results are compared to experimental values available in the literature.

  • Modern helicopter rotor blades with non-homogeneous cross section composed of anisotropic material rquire highly sophisticated structural analysis. Variation in cross section geometry makes this task of analysis more complicated. Since rotor blades generally are much longer than their lateral dimensions, one-dimensional models seem feasible, at least from a computational point of view. Therefore determination of the principal coordinate system is very important to remove the structural coupling for one-dimensional beam modelling. In this study, shear center, and principal direction. The method will be verified by comparing the results with confirmed experimental results.
