In tropical regions, lateritic soil is frequently used in road embankment. However, it is one of the sources of road failure owing to its low strength. Generally, cement and lime are used as stabilizers for lateritic soil, but they are not environmentally friendly. Some studies try to use eggshells, for they are food waste and share the same chemical composition as lime. Previous researchs have shown that eggshell powder could enhance the strength of lateritic soil. This research investigated the effect of particle size of the eggshell powder and the effect of the protein-membrane presence in the eggshell on stabilizing capacity of soil. Through laboratory tests, unconfined compressive strength was examined for various particle sizes. The particle size of eggshell powder ranging between 150 ㎛ and 88 ㎛ was appropriate size that made an excellent stabilizer at 3% concentration. On the other hand, the protein-membrane reduced the stabilizing ability of the eggshell powder when the content of eggshell powder is less than 4% in soil. Numerical analysis of road embankment was performed based on the results obtained in the laboratory tests. It is shown that the eggshell powder has improved the stability of the sub-base of the road embankment.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the egg freshness and eggshell characteristics of old laying hens by adding sea urchin shell powder to the feed of such hens to achieve the objectives continuously pursued by environmental management, such as business profitability and waste resource utilization. A total of 90 Hy-Line Brown layers (66 weeks of age) were randomly divided into 2 treatments with 3 replicates, each of which consisted of 15 older layers, for 4 weeks. These treatments included a control (i.e., 0%) and 2% sea urchin shell powder. The 2% supplementation of sea urchin shell powder increased the Haugh unit (HU) at 2 and 4 weeks and eggshell strength at 4 wks compared to the controls (p<0.05). The HU at 0 weeks, eggshell thickness from 0 through 3 weeks, and eggshell strength at 0 and 2 weeks were not different between treatments (p>0.05). These results suggest that the addition of 2% sea urchin powder to the feed of laying hens improves egg freshness and eggshell strength in old laying hens.

The eggshell is a type of bio-waste which is considered hazardous to the environment. In this research, the waste eggshell is utilized as a potential filler in cementitious material. This study has measured by zeta potential to analyze the interaction between the surface of the filler and the calcium ion in the solution. Meanwhile, the effect of eggshell powder on cement hydration process has been determined by isothermal calorimeter. The results show that the surface of eggshell powder have a strong adsorption of Ca2+, and addition of the eggshell powder provides a heterogeneous nucleation site for cement, which promotes the growth of hydration products.
Calcium phosphate powders were successfully synthesized by using re-cycled eggshell and phosphoric acid. The crystallization behavior and powder morphologies of the synthesized powders were dependent on the starting condition of the eggshell, the mixing ratio and method of the eggshell and phosphoric acid, and calcination temperature. In general, $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate was stably synthesized at about $900^{\circ}C$ for 1h at each proper mixing ratio. And, the synthesized powders showed the similar microstructures to the morphology of original eggshell with uniform particle sizes. In this study, the calcium phosphate powders were synthesized with eggshell in various processing method. And their unique microstructures obtained from the eggshell were also. observed. The crystalline developments and microstructures of the synthesized powders were examined by X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscopy.
Before transplanting Chinese cabbage seedlings, two kinds of eggshell powder were blended into the soil of cabbage field where the club root pathogen, Plasmodiophora brassicae, was infested. The incidence of clubroot disease, the shoot and root growth of cabbages, and soil pH were examined four times at 10 to 13 days interval from transplanting Chinese cabbage. As results, the cabbages treated with eggshell powder without membrane showed the fastest growth in above ground part, and the lowest disease index for clubroot disease. The cabbages treated with eggshell powder with membrane showed better growth than the cabbages of non-treated check, but lower growth than those treated with eggshell powder without membrane. Soil pH started to increase from 3 weeks after soil blending of eggshell powder, and it reached to above 8.0. However, the soil pH of non-treated check stayed at around 6.8. In the experiment to compare the effect of eggshell powder with other calcium compounds, soil-blending of $CaCO_3$ resulted the lowest disease incidence of 1.7 and the registered fungicide, 'flusulfamide', and the resistant variety 'CR Green cabbage' followed with the incidence of 1.9. Cabbages of non-treated check scored the highest disease incidence, 3.4, and that of eggshell powder without membrane was as high as 2.7. However, the growth of Chinese cabbage showed the different pattern to the disease incidence. Chinese cabbages treated with eggshell without membrane recorded the highest average growth, around 2.1 kg. On the other hand, the average growth of CR Green Chinese cabbage was about 2.0 kg, that of flusulfamide-treatment plot was 1.7, and that of non-treated check was as low as 1.3 kg. Soil blending of eggshell powder without membrane did not inhibit the development of clubroot, but increased the growth of cabbage to a great extent. Therefore, it was confirmed that soil blending of eggshell powder before transplanting makes the Chinese cabbage culture possible even in the field infested with club root pathogen.

This study investigated the use of different amounts of eggshell powder (ESP), namely 5%, 10%, and 15% by weight, as a substitute for Ordinary Portland Cement. The results show that its flowability and 28-day compressive strength. Meanwhile the carbon dioxide emission was though sustainable assessment analyzed It was concluded that ESP replacement level of around 5% provides the best performance to reduces environmental pollution.
Eggshell (ES) is a by-product of table eggs with high content of calcium carbonate which can be used as a calcium source in feed. In this study, we have first illuminated the potential application of ES as a novel carrier for probiotics. The carriers used in the study include a SBM (Soybean meal), ESL (Eggshell powder with large particles), ESF (Eggshell powder with fine particles), and the complex carriers (SBM+ESL, SBM+ESF). The structure of carriers absorbed by L. plantarum was confirmed by SEM image. Among these carriers, the complex carrier SBM+ESF showed the highest viability of L. plantarum with pH 7~8 during four weeks storage at room temperature. The SBM+ESF was further tested as a carrier for various probiotic strains at $4^{\circ}C$ or $30^{\circ}C$. All the probiotic strains showed high viability at $4^{\circ}C$ storage. However, a significant reduction of Lactobacillus cells was observed at $30^{\circ}C$ storage. B. lichenifomis maintained high viability whereas B. subtilis, B. amyloliquefaciens, and S. cerevisiae showed the reduction of $2{\log}_{10}$ (CFU/g). These results suggest that if the ESF as a calcium source in feed was mixed with SBM, it can be used as an effective complex carrier for improving the viability of some probiotics including B. licheniformis.
An efficient process for recovery of calcium from the eggshell was developed and some organic acids were used in an attempt to enhance the degree of calcium ionization. Eggshell membrane was readily separated from crushed eggshell based on the differences in specific gravities. The conditions which allowed most efficient membrane removal were found to be 30 rpm of speed, 30 min of residence time and 0.08 of volume fraction. It took 3 hours for the eggshell powder prepared at $1000^{\circ}C$ to reach L value of 90 with the Hausner ratio being 1.43. The calcium ion concentrations were 990, 3500, 3900 and 4200 ppm in pure water, acetic acid, citric acid and lactic acid$(0.05{\sim}3%)$ aqueous solution, respectively. The degrees of ionization of calcium-citrate-malate complex(CCM), calcium-citric acid complex(CC) and calcium malic acid complex(CM) increased by 4 to 5 times compared to eggshell calcium powder.
Synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HA) was attempted through a room-temperature reaction of calcined eggshell with phosphoric acid. Ball-milled, calcined eggshell powder, which has a specific surface area of $31.6m^2/g$, was mixed with various concentrations of phosphoric acid at room temperature. The mixtures showed high reactivity and a vigorous exothermic reaction ; the reacted samples showed both $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaHPO_4$ crystal phases. After heating at temperatures above $400^{\circ}C$, an HA crystal phase was observed in all samples. The calcined eggshell showed a pure CaO single phase, while the $Ca(OH)_2$ phase was only observed in the wet, ball-milled calcined powder. The degree of formation of the HA crystal phase increased as the phosphoric acid concentration and the heating temperature were increased. A mixture with 50 wt% phosphoric acid concentration showed a well-developed HA crystal phase after heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$, while the formation of a more intensive amorphous phase was observed in the products of the room-temperature reaction.
Biocompatible ${\beta}$-Tricalcium Phosphate(${\beta}$-TCP) powder was successfully synthesized by using a re-cycled eggshell and phosphoric acid. The crystallization behavior of the synthesized powder was dependent on the mixing ratio between the eggshell and phosphoric acid, the starting condition of the eggshell and calcination temperature. The ${\beta}$-TCP was stably synthesized in the 1:1.3~1:1.5 (wt%) mixing ratios of calcined eggshell and phosphoric acid. The synthesis was achieved at about $900{\circ}$ for 1h in an air atmosphere. The crystalline development and microstructure of the synthesized powder were examined by X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscopy.
