In this study, the effect of DEM resolution (15m, 30m, 50m, 70m, 100m, 200m, 300m) on the hydrological simulation was examined using BASINS (Better Assessment Science Integrating point and Nonpoint Source) for Heukcheon watershed (303.3km2) data from 1998 to 1999. Generally, as the cell size of DEM increased, topographical changes were observed as the original range of elevation decreased. The processing time of watershed delineation and river network needed more time and effort on smaller cell size of DEM. The larger DEM demonstrated had some errors in the junction of river network which might effects on the simulation of water quantity and quality. The area weighted average watershed slope became lower but the length weighted average channel slope became higher as the DEM size increased. DEM resolution affected substantially on the topographical parameter but less on the hydrological simulation. Considering processing time and accuracy on hydrological simulation DEM mesh size of 100m is recommended for this watershed.

Urbanization and waterworks construction in natural watershed have been causing higher flood risks in lowland areas. Detention basins have become one of the most efficient fundamental instruments for storm water and environmental management at watershed scale. Nowadays, there are many studies coupled numerical methods of flood routing with optimization algorithms to investigate factors that impact on the efficiency of detention basins in flood reduction in a watershed, such as detention basin location, size, and cost and watershed characteristics. Although these couplings have been become more widespread but cumbersome computation and hydraulic data requirement still are their limitations. To tackle the procedure efforts due to numerical integration and data collection, simple approach is proposed to primarily estimate effects of detention basins. The approach basis is the linear system theory applied to the solution of hydrologic flood routing. The paper introduces an analytical method for estimating detention effects deriving by recent studies and innovatively analyses this equation on fractal perspective. Then, an optimization technique is performed by applying harmony search algorithms (HSA) to optimize efficiency of detention basins at watershed scale. The location and size of upstream detention basin are simultaneously obtained. Finally, the proposed methodology, practically applied for a real watershed in Kan river, Iran.

The purpose of this study is to find out the changes in geomorphic characteristics of a small watershed when a golf course is constructed. The research site is a set of seven small watersheds including an 18-hole golf course that were randomly selected. The size, shape, and drainage network of watersheds were measured by using planimeter, watershed eccentricity, and stream order, respectively. In addition, a 25m$\times$25m mesh was used on topographic maps and grading plans in order to obtain the slope, elevation, and aspect of the watersheds. The major results of this research, while investigating of the changes in geomorphic characteristics of watersheds when a golf course is constructed, are as follows: 1. The size of watersheds is increased in accordance to the difference in elevation between the golf course site and the small watershed. 2. The watershed eccentricities are in general similar except for a few low-valued cases. 3. The changes in the average altitude and the gradient are more drastic with their bigger original values. 4. The aspects are changed more with decreasing elevation. 5. The stream order decreases in the case of a low watershed eccentricity. 6. The surface modification has a closer relationship to the slope rather than the size of effective use area. 7. With a steeper gradient and an excessively low gradient, the height of cutting/filling is increased.

In this study, the effect of DEM (Digital Elevation Model) resolution (15m, 30m, 50m, 70m, 100m, 200m, 300m) on the hydrological simulation was examined using the BASINS (Better Assessment Science Integrating point and Nonpoint Source) for the Heukcheon watershed (303.3 ㎢) data from 1998 to 1999. The processing time of watershed delineation and river network needed more time and effort on smaller cell size of DEM. The larger DEM demonstrated had some errors in the junction of river network which might affect on the simulation of water quantity and quality. The area weighted average watershed slope became milder but the length weighted average channel slope became steeper as the DEM size increased. DEM resolution affected substantially on the topographical parameter but less on the hydrological simulation. Considering processing time and accuracy on hydrological simulation, DEM grid size of 100m is recommended for this range of watershed size.

A sensitivity analysis study was performed to examine the effects of cell size on a distributed non-point source pollution model. The model, AnnAGNPS, whiff is a modified version of USDA's AGNPS, was applied to Eung stream watershed, a tributary of Cheongmi stream located in the South Branch of Han River System. The model components and results, such as channel length, slope, land use, and delivery ratio, were analyzed according to the various cell sizes from 10 to 200 ha. As cell sire increases, channel length decreases due to short-circuiting of meandering creek. The decreased channel length has more significant effects on the model results than any other geomorphological change. When the effects of land use and soil distribution are excluded, sediment delivery loads increase due to shorter time to reach the outlet of the watershed in larger tell size. When those effects are included, however, sediment delivery loads decrease in larger fell size because the variety of land use types can not be inputted. The predominant land use in the applied watershed is forest with very low soil erosion such that the predicted sediment delivery might be much lower than real system. The cell size of 30 ha was determined to produce the most appropriate resolution. Surface runoff and non-point source loads of TN, TP and BOD were predicted and the results agree well with the field measurements. From this study, it was shown that the model results would be very dependent on variations of topography, land use, and soil distribution, as a function of cell size, and the optimum cell size is very important for successful application of distributed non-point source pollution model.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of control-release fertilizer (CRF) on pollutant loadings from a small watershed. The Baran watershed, 386 ha in size, was selected as the study site, and the AGNPS (Agricultural Non-point Source Pollution) model was used to evaluate the effects of fertilizer types. Digital maps of digital elevation (DEM), slope distribution, channel, flow direction, landuse, soil, and curve number were extracted from the study watershed. Model parameters related to hydrology and water quality were calibrated and validated by comparing model predictions with the observed data collected for 2 years (1999 to 2000). Calibration and validation resulted in $R^2$ values of 0.75-0.91 for all the water quality parameters. All the paddy fields (21.2 %) of the study watershed were sprayed by either CRF or NPK (standard fertilizer). In CRF application, total nitrogen (TN) load was 4.9% less than NPK application, however total phosphorus (TP) load was 0.7 % more than NPK application. In CRF application, considering only paddy fields in the study area, TN load was 38.7 % less than NPK application. Using CRF in paddy fields could be one of the ways to reduce pollutant loadings from agricultural watersheds, however, in order to confirm it, more researches about effects of using CRF are necessary.

This study analyzed the role of dams for the flood control by the observed and simulated hourly flood discharge data. The study area was the Nakdong river basin with Andong and Imha dams. For the analysis 31 flood events from 1997 to 2010 were selected. In the analysis of the flood reduction rate (FRR) of dam itself, the FRR was not decreased with higher size of floods which is not as we expected. In order to see the trend of flood reduction rate depending on the flood size, flood discharge volume presents it better than peak flood discharge. In the comparison of the flood reduction effects of the two dams, Andong dam has 7% larger flood reduction influence at the Sungju gauging station (SGS) located farthest from the selected watershed. Comparing the ratio of the watershed area based on the covered size of the SGS, the FRR of dam is smaller than the area rate. The impact of FRR of dam showed that the FRR fell below 10% when reaching the size of watershed area corresponding to 8.5 times of the size of watershed area of the dam which is larger than Namhan river basin (7 times).

Korea is one of the countries with a large veterinary antibiotics market, although antimicrobial resistance in bacteria is becoming a serious issue in many countries. The Korean government started to take interest in estimating the effects of livestock manure on rivers and agricultural soils and in monitoring of heavy metals, organic pollutants and antibiotics in the ambient water and soil. In this paper, pre-treatment methods to separate the selected antibiotics from solid samples were reviewed. It is essential to select an efficient and appropriate procedure for pre-treatment due to the high proportion of proteins and organics in biosolid samples. Pre-treatment consists of extraction followed by clean-up. Initially, homogenized samples were extracted by sonication, mechanical agitation or pressurized liquid extraction with methanol/acetonitrile/water mixture under acidic/basic conditions depending on the compound. However, aminoglycosides and colistin were extracted with 5% trichloroacetic acid and HCl, respectively. Since the ${\beta}-lactams$ are easily decomposed in acidic and basic conditions, they were extracted in neutral pH. Filtration with a membrane (pore size, $0.2{\mu}m$) or solid phase extraction with HLB and methanol, as eluents, was normally applied for the clean-up. At least, three different pre-treatment procedures should be adopted to screen all the selected antibiotics in solid samples.
The study was intended to simulate the sediment reduction effects of the Vegetative Filter Strip (VFS) in uplands of Saemangeum watershed through VFSMOD-W model application. The model was calibrated by using the field data and the simulation scenarios were designed based on the investigation of uplands characteristics in Saemangeum watershed. The simulation scenarios were considered various size and slope of uplands including 1 ha, 5 ha, 10 ha of field size with width-length ratio of 1 : 1 having 7% and 15% of slopes under the daily rainfall of 50 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm, and 200 mm in order to mimic the different fields conditions. The effluent reduction ranged from 2.9~13.5% and 2.9~12.1% for runoff, and 33.8~97.0% and 27.1~85.9% for sediment under the field's slope of 7% and 15%, respectively. The VFS reduction effects showed different degree of influence from field size, slope, rainfall amounts. Based on the simulated results, the sediment contributing non-point source pollution expected to be reduced in the condition of VFS constructed 10% of fields in outlet of less than 10 ha of uplands having less than 15% of the slope.
