In this study, strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios are investigated for SDOF systems with period range of 0.1-3.0 s considering soil structure interaction for earthquake motions recorded on soft soil. The effect of stiffness degradation on strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios is investigated. The modified-Clough model is used to represent structures that exhibit significant stiffness degradation when subjected to reverse cyclic loading and the elastoplastic model is used to represent non-degrading structures. The effect of negative strain - hardening on the inelastic displacement and strength of structures is also investigated. Soil structure interacting systems are modeled and analyzed with effective period, effective damping and effective ductility values differing from fixed-base case. For inelastic time history analyses, Newmark method for step by step time integration was adapted in an in-house computer program. New equations are proposed for strength reduction factor and inelastic displacement ratio of interacting system as a function of structural period($\tilde{T}$, T) ductility (${\mu}$) and period lengthening ratio ($\tilde{T}$/T).
The patient with a posttraumatic stiffness frequently has a history of prolonged immobilization after a traumatic event. Adhesions in the extraarticular humeroscapular motion interface may be present independently or in combination with intraarticular capsular contractures. A through history and physical examination usually reveal the cause and anatomic location of stiffness. Passive stretching exercise program is effective as a first line treatment, but manipulation under anesthesia is usually not effective because of potential complication such as fracture, tendon rupture and neurologic injury. The humeroscapular motion interface adhesion can be released either open or arthroscopically. The combined technique coupled with an aggressive rehabilitation program can provide more effective motion restoration and pain relief.
The effective length factor of a framed column may be determined by means of the alignment chart procedure. This method is based on many unrealistic assumptions, among which is that all columns have the same stiffness parameter, which is dependent on the length, axial load, and moment of inertia of the column. A new approximate method is developed for the determination of effective length factors for columns in unbraced frames. This method takes into account the effects of inelastic column behaviour, far end conditions of the restraining beams and columns, semi-rigid beam-to-column connections, and differentiated stiffness parameters of columns. This method may be implemented on a microcomputer. A numerical study was carried out to demonstrate the extent to which the involved parameters affect the K factor. The beam-to-column connection stiffness, the stiffness parameter of columns, and the far end conditions of restraining members have a significant effect on the K factor of the column under investigation. The developed method is recommended for design purposes.
In the design of tall reinforced concrete (R/C) buildings, the serviceability stiffness criteria in terms of maximum lateral displacement and inter-story drift must be satisfied to prevent large second-order P-delta effects. To accurately assess the lateral deflection and stiffness of tall R/C structures, cracked members in these structures need to be identified and their effective member flexural stiffness determined. In addition, the implementation of the geometric nonlinearity in the analysis can be significant for an accurate prediction of lateral deflection of the structure, particularly in the case of tall R/C building under lateral loading. It can therefore be important to consider the cracking effect together with the geometric nonlinearity in the analysis in order to obtain more accurate results. In the present study, a computer program based on the iterative procedure has been developed for the three dimensional analysis of reinforced concrete frames with cracked beam and column elements. Probability-based effective stiffness model is used for the effective flexural stiffness of a cracked member. In the analysis, the geometric nonlinearity due to the interaction of axial force and bending moment and the displacements of joints are also taken into account. The analytical procedure has been demonstrated through the application of R/C frame examples in which its accuracy and efficiency in comparison with experimental and other analytical results are verified. The effectiveness of the analytical procedure is also illustrated through a practical four story R/C frame example. The iterative procedure provides equally good and consistent prediction of lateral deflection and effective flexural member stiffness. The proposed analytical procedure is efficient from the viewpoints of computational effort and convergence rate.

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the human body having more muscles than its degree-of-freedom modulates an effective stiffness using redundant actuation, and to apply this concept to the design and control of advanced machines which requires adaptable spring. To investigate the adaptable stiffness phenomenon due to redundant actuation in the human body, this paper derives a general stiffness model of the Human body. In particular, for a planar 1 DOF human arm model, a planar 2 DOF human arm model, a spherical 3 DOF shoulder model, a 4 DOF human arm model, and a 7 DOF human arm model, the required nonlinear geometry ad the number of required actuator for successful modulation of the effective stiffness are analyzed along with a load distribution method for modulation of the required stiffness of such systems. Secondly, the concept of motion frequency modulation is introduced to show the usefulness of adaptive stiffness modulation. The motion frequency modulation represents a control of stiffness and / or inertia properties of systems. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, simulations are performed for 2 DOF anthropomorphic robot.

In this study, the effect of stiffness ratio between base frame and anchorgae is evaluated and the seismic verification of nuclear power plant equipment anchorage is performed for typical equipment. The stiffness ratio between base frame and anchorage is mainly controlled by the effective height of side wall plate. And, the change of that stiffness ratio cause the large shift or ovreturning axis of equipment base. This shift of overturning axis of equipment base is able to reduce the factor of safety about 10%. Therefore, the adequate method for evaluating of effective height of side wall is required as further study.

Effective beam width model (EBWM) has been used for analysis of post-tensioned (PT) flat plate slab frames under lateral loads. For analyzing PT flat plate slab structure under lateral loads with good precision, reduction in slab stiffness has to be accurately estimated for Effective beam width model(EBWM). For this purpose, this study collected test results of PT flat plate system conducted by former researches. And this study reduced the width of slab so that the stiffness of the EBWM converged into the lateral stiffness of each test specimens by trial and error. By conducting nonlinear regression analysis, an equation for calculating stiffness reduction factor for the PT flat plate is proposed.
The paper presents an effective stiffness model for deformational analysis of reinforced concrete cracked members in bending throughout the short-term loading up to the near failure. The method generally involves the analytical derivation of an effective moment of inertia based on the smeared crack technique. The method, in a simplified way, enables us to take into account the non linear properties of concrete, the effects of cracking and tension stiffening. A statistical analysis has shown that proposed technique is of adequate accuracy of calculated and experimental deflections data provided for beams with small, average and normal reinforcement ratios.
This paper presents a practical method to evaluate the effective length factors for columns in multi-storey unbraced frames based on the concept of storey-based elastic buckling by means of decomposing a multi-storey frame into a series of single-storey partially-restrained (PR) frames. The lateral stiffness of the multi-storey unbraced frame is derived and expressed as the product of the lateral stiffness of each storey. Thus, the stability analysis for the multi-storey frame is conducted by investigating the lateral stability of each individual storey, which is facilitated through decomposing the multi-storey frame into a series of single-storey PR frames and applying the storey-based stability analysis proposed by the authors (Xu and Liu 2002) for each single-storey PR frame. Prior to introducing decomposition approaches, the end rotational stiffness of an axially load column is derived and rotational stiffness interaction between the upper and lower columns is investigated. Three decomposition approaches, characterized by means of distributing beam-to-column rotational-restraining stiffness between the upper and lower columns, are proposed. The procedure of calculating storey-based column effective length factors is presented. Numerical examples are then given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

In this paper, the characteristics of high damping rubber bearing were studied through various prototype test. The characteristics of HDRB were dependent on displacements, repeated cycles, frequencies, vertical pressure, temperature, the capability of shear deformation and the vertical stiffness. The prototype test showed that the displacement was the most governing factor influencing on characteristics of HDRB. The effective stiffness and equivalent damping of HDRB were decreased with displacement, and increased with frequency. The effective stiffness was decreased with high vertical pressure, while the equivalent damping was increased. In which, the equivalent damping was more dependent on the vertical pressure than the effective stiffness. According to the results of this study, more careful examination is required to design the effective stiffness and equivalent damping ratio considering the dependencies of design displacement and exciting velocity.
