  • Chronic wounds, pressure sores, lesions, and infections of microbial origin in bedridden, paralyzed, or malnutrition patients remain the object of study of many researchers. A variety of factors behind the development of these disorders are related to the patient's immune system, making it unable to respond effectively to the treatment of the wound. These factors can be properly controlled, giving particular importance to the ethiology and stage of the wound, as well as the time periods corresponding to the replacement of the dressings. The present research reports a novel foam/soft material, ${{\small}L}$-Cys-g-PCL, with an application for decubitus/pressure ulcers, especially for wounds with a difficult healing process due to infections and constant oxidation of the soft tissues. During this work, the interactions between S. aureus and ${{\small}L}$-Cys-g-PCL foam were studied under conditions that simulate decubitus ulcers; namely, pH and exudate. The effects of duration of grafting (1 or 8 h) and pH (7.0 and 8.9) on wettability, surface energy, swelling, and porosity were also evaluated. Results showed an effective microbicidal activity exhibiting an inhibition ratio of 99.73% against S. aureus. This new ${{\small}L}$-Cys-g-PCL soft material showed saftey to contact skin, ability to be shaped to fill in sunken holes (craters) - pressure ulcers stage III - and to act as a smart material responsive to pH, which can be tailored to develop better swelling properties at alkaline pH where exudates are normally higher, so as to address exudate self-cleaning and prevention of desiccation.

  • The river and groundwater are contaminated by pollution source of a waste landfill and others near river. The contaminant transport and response of aquifer parameters are studied in the aquifer affected by variation of river stage. First, the equation for component of variation velocity with river stage is developed by using the analytical solution of groundwater governing equation. The numerical model which considered component of variation velocity is constructed for the transport of mass by advection and dispersion. In order to verify a numerical scheme, the analytical solution is used. The numerical solution is coincided with the analytical one. Aquifer parameters of Nanjido are used as the data for numerical experiment. Second, the range of aquifer parameters is established in order to reponse contaminant transport in aquifer with river stage. The result of numerical experiment shows that the range of the storage coefficient except hydraulic conductivity and effective porosity is relatively sensitive to the contaminant transport. When the storage coefficient is the order of 10$\^$-2/, the response is very sensitive to the variation of river stage.

  • In this work, cost effective venting is considered by comparing flow rates of 5$m\ell$/min, 10$m\ell$/min, and 20$m\ell$/min. Studies were performed on a soil artificially contaminated with diesel oil (the initial TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) concentration of 7098mg/kg), and nutrient condition was C:N:P rate of 100:10:1. The soil has a sandy texture with pH of 6.8, 2.16 ~2.38% organic matter, a total porosity of 47~52% and field capacity 16.2~ 17.2%. The column experiments was made of glass column of 60cm length and 10cm I.D. at controlled temperature of 2$0^{\circ}C$($\pm$2.5$^{\circ}C$). The efficiency of continuous flow rate of 5, 10 and 20$m\ell$/min resulted in separately 61.3%, 58.1%, and 55% reduction of initial TPH concentration(7098mg/kg). Hydrocarbon utilizing microbial count and dehydrogenase activity in air flow of 5$m\ell$/min were higher than those of the others. The first order degradation rate of n-alkanes ranging from C10 to C28 was higher than that of pristane and phytane as isoprenoids. The $C_{17}$/pristane and $C_{18}$phytane ratios for monitoring the degree of biodegradation were useful only during the early stages of oil degradation. Degradation contributed from about 89% to 93% of TPH removal. Volatilization loss of diesel oil in contaminated soil was about 7% to 11%, which was significantly small compared to degradation.n.

  • The most effective way to distinguish subsurface interfaces that produce various geophysical responses is through the integration of multiple geophysical methods, with each method detecting both a complementary and unique set of distinct physical properties relating to the subsurface. In this study, shallow seismic reflection (SSR) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were conducted at the Cheongju-Gadeok site of the Korea National Groundwater Monitoring Network to map the water table, which was measured at 12 m depth during the geophysical surveys. The water table proved to be a good target reflector in both datasets, as the abrupt transition from the overlying unsaturated weathered rock to the underlying saturated weathered rock yielded large acoustic impedance and dielectric constant contrasts. The two datasets were depth converted and integrated into a single section, with the SSR and GPR surveys conducted to ensure subsurface imaging at approximately the same wavelength. The GPR data provided detailed information on the upper ~15 m of the section, whereas the SSR data imaged structures at depths of 10-45 m. The integrated section thus captured the full depth coverage of the sandy clay, water table, weathered rock, soft rock, and hard rock structures, which correlated well with local drillcore and water table observations. Incorporation of these two geophysical datasets yielded a synthetic section that resembled a simplified aquifer model, with the best-fitting seismic velocity, dielectric constant, and porosity of the saturated weathered layer being $v_{seismic}=1000m/s$, ${\varepsilon}_r=16$, and ${\phi}=0.32$, respectively.

  • Recent studies have shown that there are various systems which can be used to monitor hazardous area in a debris flow location, but lack of methodological research on the exact location where each instrument should be installed has hindered the success of this systems. The objective of this study is to suggest the measurement system for monitoring debris-flow and propose the effective method to determine location of measurement system. Previously studied, from 1991 to 2015, were referred and the applied ratio of every instrument was investigated. The measurement information was divided into 8 categories including rainfall, debris-flow velocity, displacement, fluid pore pressure, ground vibration, image processing, impact force and peak flow depth. The result of this study revealed that the most applied instruments to be rain gauge and geophone for measuring average rainfall and ground vibration respectively. The Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP) method was selected to determine installation location of instrument and the weighting factors were estimated through fine content, soil thickness, porosity, shear strength, elastic modulus, hydraulic conductivity and saturation. The soil thickness shows highest weights and the fine content relatively demonstrates lowest weights. The score of each position can be calculated through the weighting factors and the lowest score position can be judged as the weak point. The weak point denotes the easily affecting area and thus, the point is suitable for installing the measurement system. This study suggests a better method for safely managing the debris-flow through a precise location for installing measurement system.

  • Cylindrical type ceramic filers, that is 60 O.D$\times$10t$\times$600L and 60 O.D$\times$10t$\times$1,000L were manufactured by vacuum forming processes using ceramic ray materials. For cylindrical type ceramic filters, porosity and bulk density were measured for, 80 to 90% and 0.3 to 0.4 g/㎤, respectively at uniform pore size of 41 to 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Bench scale candle filters (60$\psi$ $\times$10t$\times$600L) were tested using different dusts collected from many industries including chemical processing, glass processing and metal manufacturing pants. Collection efficiencies found out to range from 99.87% to 99.90%, while resistance coefficients from 1.1$\times$10(sup)11/$m^2$ to 1.7$\times$10(sup)11/$m^2$ . Full scale low density ceramic filters (60$\psi$ $\times$10t$\times$1,000L) were also tested at 1 atm, $600^{\circ}C$ to reveal the filtration efficiency, conditioning, and resistance coefficients using two different types of dust as chemical processing and metal refined processing. Darcys law resistance coefficients were measured to range 1.44$\times$10(sup)11/$m^2$ to 2.74$\times$10(sup)11/$m^2$, and collection efficiencies on the range 99.84 to 99.96%, Finally, results of long term performance test showed that filters were conditioned after 170hrs. Experimental conditions for effective filtration were examined under the condition 10 cm/sec face velocity, 3kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ pulsing pressure, 5 min filtration cycle, and 300msec pulse opening time.

  • This study attempted to manufacture a Cu-15 at.%Ga coating layer via the cold spray process and investigated the effect of heat treatment environment on the properties of cold sprayed coating material. Three kinds of heat treatment environments, $5%H_2$+argon, pure argon, and vacuum were used in this study. Annealing treatments were conducted at $200{\sim}800^{\circ}C$/1 hr. With the cold sprayed coating layer, pure ${\alpha}$-Cu and small amounts of $Ga_2O_3$ were detected in the XRD, EDS, EPMA analyses. Porosity significantly decreased and hardness also decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The inhomogeneous dendritic microstructure of cold sprayed coating material changed to the homogeneous and dense one (microstructural evolution) with annealing heat treatment. Oxides near the interface of particles could be reduced by heat treatment especially in vacuum and argon environments. Vacuum environment during heat treatment was suggested to be most effective one to improve the densification and purification properties of cold sprayed Cu-15 at.%Ga coating material.

  • The engineering characteristics of natural sediments containing diatom microfossils have been investigated for their abnormal deformation and strength behavior for a few decades. The presence of disk or hollow shape diatoms causes low compressibility, high hydraulic conductivity, and high shear strength of sediments. Some of these unusual differences show the characteristic of diatom owing to the interlocking of large interparticle porosity and angular particles. This phenomenon implies the possible use of diatom as modification materials to change the engineering performance of soil mixtures. This paper describes the engineering characteristics of diatom-kaolin mixture to investigate the engineering properties of diatom modified soils using conventional geotechnical tests and elastic and electromagnetic wave propagation tests. Experimental test results show the performance improvement by increasing diatom contents and the performance degradation by the breakage of interlocking between diatom particles under high effective stress.

  • A dual-porosity filmed agglomerate model for the porous cathode of the molten carbonate fuel has been investigated to predict the cell performance. A phenomenological treatment of molecular, kinetic and electrode parameters has been given. The major physical and chemical phenomena being modeled include mass transfer, ohmic losses and reaction kinetics at the electrode- electrolyte interface. The model predicts steady-state cell performance, given the above conditions that characterize the state of the electrode. Quasi-linearization and finite difference techniques are used to solve the coupled nonlinear differential equations. Also, the effective surface area of electrode pore was obtained by mercury porosimeter. The results of the investigation are presented in the form of plots of overpotential vs. current density with varied the electrode material, gas composition and mechanism. The predicted polarization curves are compared with the empirical data from 1 c$m^2$ cell. A fair correspondence is observed.

  • In the case of tunneling, the equilibrium state of hydro-geologic environments destroy and change abruptly in some section of whole works. Specially, it's very possible for seawater to intrude toward the site of tunnel if the field is nearly located in a costal region. In this study, we have evaluated the mechanism related between groundwater flow and seawater intrusion that by impacts of tunneling. Various hydro-geological field tests have performed for getting four representative hydrogeologic properties of geologic formations such as transmissivity (T), storativity(S), longitudial dispersity(${\alpha}_L$), and effective porosity($n_e$). For the effect of tunneling, the numerical model was first simulated based on the governing equation of groundwater flow. The results showed that the maximum drawdown was 17.2m and the total inflow into the tunnel had the range from 0.48 to $3.63m^3/day/m$. Secondly, the three dimensional numerical model was analyzed to investigate a characteristic of seawater intrusion based on the previous simulated results of groundwater flow. The results showed the seawater moved as the range of $200{\sim}220m$ from the initial interface between seawater and groundwater toward the tunnel.
