In this paper, a ship detection method is proposed; this method uses edge-based segmentation and histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) with the ship size ratio. The proposed method can prevent a marine collision accident by detecting ships at close range. Furthermore, unlike radar, the method can detect ships that have small size and absorb radio waves because it involves the use of a vision-based system. This system performs three operations. First, the foreground is separated from the background and candidates are detected using Sobel edge detection and morphological operations in the edge-based segmentation part. Second, features are extracted by employing HOG descriptors with the ship size ratio from the detected candidate. Finally, a support vector machine (SVM) verifies whether the candidates are ships. The performance of these methods is demonstrated by comparing their results with the results of other segmentation methods using eight-fold cross validation for the experimental results.

The far-zone magnetic field patterns of a E-plane horn antenna with various edge structures are analyzed using UTD. The ray tracing method is used to lacate the shadow boundaries, and then GO and UTD are utilized to evaluate the incident, reflected, diffracted, surface diffaracted, and the second order diffracted, diffracted-reflected, and diffracted-reflected-diffracted waves existing in each region of interest. By doing this, we analyzed the effects of flanges or caps connected on the edge of a horn antenna on the side lobe and back lobe levels. Also, the validity of this paper is proved by comparing the analytical results with those of measurement and method of moment presented in the reference.

Three-dimensional finite-difference simulation of earthquake ground motion is performed using a locally variable time-step (LVTS) scheme matching with discontinuous grids. Discontinuous grids in three directions and extension of the discontinuous grids' boundary to the free-surface in the LVTS scheme minimize the cost of both the computational memory and the CPU time for models like the localized sedimentary basin. A simplified model of sedimentary basin is dealt to show the feasibility and efficiency of the LVTS scheme. The basin parameters are examined to understand the main characteristics on ground-motion response in the basin. The results show that the seismic energy is concentrated on a marginal area of the basin far from the source. This focusing effect is mainly due to the constructive interference of the direct S-wave with the basin-edge induced surface waves. The ground-motion amplification over the deepest part of the basin is relatively lower than that above the shallow basin edge. Therefore the ground-motion amplification may be more related to the source azimuth or the direction of the incident waves into the basin rather than the depth of it.

The phase criterion of the feedback cycle of low-speed edgetones has been obtained using the jet-edge interaction model which is based on the substitution of an array of dipoles for the reaction of the wedge to the impinging jet. The edgetone is produced by the feedback loop between the downstream-convected sinuous disturbance and upstream-propagating waves generated by the impingement of the disturbance on the wedge. By estimation of the phase difference between the downstream and the upstream disturbances, the relationship between the edge distance and the wavelength is obtained according to the phase-locking condition at the nozzle lip. With a little variation depending on the characteristics of jet-edge interaction, the criterion can be approximated as follows: h/.LAMBDA. + h/.lambda. = n - 1/4, where h is the stand-off distance between the nozzle lip and the edge tip, .LAMBDA. is the wavelength of downstream-convected wave, .lambda. is the wavelength of the upstream-propagating acoustic wave and n is the stage number for the ladder-like characteristics of frequency. The present criterion has been confirmed by estimating wavelengths from available experimental data and investigating their appropriateness. The above criterion has been found to be effective up to 90.deg. of wedge angle corresponding to the cavitytones.
Forward modeling by construction of synthetic data is usually practiced in a horizontal surface and a few subsurface structures. However, in-situ surveys often take place in such topographic changes that the corrupted field data always make it difficult to interpret the right signals. To examine the propagation characteristic of elastic waves on the irregular surface, a general mesh generation code for finite element method was modified to consider the topography. By implementing this algorithm, the time domain modeling was practiced in some models with surface topography such as mound, channel, etc. The synthetic data obtained by receivers placed on surface also agreed with the analytic solution. The snapshots showing the total wave-field revealed the propagation characteristic of the elastic waves through complex subsurface structures and helped to identify the signals on the time traces. The transmission of Rayleigh waves along the surface, compressive waves, and sheer waves was observed. Moreover, it turned out that the Rayleigh waves behave like a new source at the edge.

A complete form of physical optics solution to the diffraction of electromagnetic waves by a dielectric wedge with arbitrary dielectric constant and general wedge angle is obtained for an incident plane wave with any angle. Based on the formulation of dual integral equation in the spectral domain, the physical optics solution is constructed by sum of geometrical optics term including multiple reflection inside the wedge and the edge diffracted field, of which diffraction functions are represented in a quite simple form as series of cotangent functions weighted by the Fresnel reflection coefficients. Since diffraction patterns of physical optics are discontinous at dielectric interfaces, Part II and III of these three companion papers will be concerned with correction to the error of the physical optics approximation.

In this paper, the propagation of elastic wave generated by loading impact to plates made of isotropic of anisotropic material was studied. And the influence of boundary conditions (free or clamped edge) upon the reflection of elastic wave was anlyzed. Also, double exposure holographic interferometer using ruby pulse laser was formed in order to investigate transient waves. Before the elasitc wave was reflected from the edges, the elastic wave of isotropic plate such as aluminum plate showed circular interferometric fringe pattern, whereas that of anisotropic plate such as epoxy composite laminates showed elliptical one. And the transverse displacement curves obtained from experiment and theory for both plates agreed well. Also, the waves reflected from the boundary edges showed much differences according to the boundary condition of edges.

Noise barriers are widely used to reduce the sound level propagating from highways, railways or factories to residential areas. The reduced noise level at a receiver point is then determined by the diffracted waves around the edge of the barrier as well as by the transmitted waves through the barrier. 1'or proper usage, many studies either theoretical or experimental have been made with the objective of precisely Predicting the acoustic field and improving the noise attenuating properties of barriers. In this study. a simple scattering model. a line acoustic source scattered by an infinite cylinder, is introduced to simply Investigate the sound attenuation efficiency of a sound-resonating barrier. From this model study, it is observed that the sound-resonating harrier can be used as a good sound-shielding element especially for the pure-tone noise generated from the transformer. Large sound-attenuation is achieved by applying the sound-resonating barrier to the large transformers in a substation.

Container vessels are required to have a large KMT to load many containers which requires a wide transom stern form. The wide transom stern generates large stern waves particularly at the scantling draft. This means that reducing the stern wave leads to resistance reduction. Numerical analyses and Model tests for duck-tail of the stern part have been performed to reduce the resistance of the container vessel having the wide transom on the scantling draft and optimize the form of duck-tail with the change of the design parameter i.e. length and edge height. The optimized duck-tail increases the speed by 0.8 % at scantling draft.
This paper presents novel research into the source localization of multiple impacts. Source localization technology for single impact loads in a plate structure has been used for health monitoring. Most of research on source localization has been focused only on the localization of single impacts. Overlapping of dispersive waves induced by multiple impacts and reflection of those waves from the edge of the plate make it difficult to localize the sources of multiple impacts using traditional source localization technology. The method solving the overlapping problem and the reflection problem is presented in the paper. The suggested method is based on pre-signal processing technology using band pass filter and optimal filter. Results from numerical simulation and from experimentation are presented, and these verify the capability of the proposed method.
