  • In automated search of a design database to support mechanical design, it is necessaryto recognize a shape pattern which represents a design object. This paper introduces the concept of a surface relation graph (SRG) for recognizing shape patterns from a 3D boundary representation scheme of a solid model(a B-rep model). In SRG, the nodes and arcs correspond to the faces and edges shared by two adjacent faces, respectively. An attribute assigned to an arc is given by an integer which discriminates the relationship between two adjacent faces. The + sign of the integer represents the geometric convexity of the solid, and the -sign the concivity at the shared edge. The input shape is recognized by comparison with the predefined features which are subgraphs of the SRG. A hierarchyof the database for upporting the design is presented. A search for the design database is also discussed. The usefulness of this method is illustrated by some application results.

  • A surface encoder based on the Half-shaded square pattern (HSSP) is presented. The HSSP working as reference grid is composed of the straight lines which are easy to be fabricated and make measuring time short. Since the periodic cell is separated in ON/OFF by the $45^{\circ}$ straight line, the duration from the starting point of scanning to the first rising edge and the duty cycle of the pulse train vary with respect to the position of the starting point. And the relationship between X and Y position and the duration, and duty cycle is described in the simple linear equation. Therefore, it is possible to measure X and Y position with the measured duration and duty cycle without calculating load. Through the test set-up, the feasibility of the proposed surface encoder was verified. Also the future works for improvement of performance were suggested.

  • There are many factors which affect the acoustical properties of a micro-speaker. Among the factors, the shape of the diaphragm is considered in this study. As an investigating method, the finite element methods and measurement techniques applied to study the acoustical properties according to diaphragm shape. In order to vary the stiffness of the diaphragm, the some patterns of comb teeth, such as the angle and the number of comb teeth, are applied to diaphragm. We can confirm that the change of the stiffness by the changing diaphragm shape affects the vibration and sound properties of the speaker. As a result, the reduction of the angle of the comb teeth increases the diaphragm stiffness and shifts the resonance frequency to a higher frequency range. The number of the comb teeth is related to the stiffness of the edge part.

  • Stability of vertical escarpments has been the subject of discussion for long time. However, available literature provides scarce knowledge about the effect of the formation of undercut and surface cracks on the stability of a vertical escarpment. The present study deals with a systematic analysis of the effect of surface cracks and undercut on slope stability using finite element based lower bound limit analysis. In the present analysis, the non-dimensional stability factor (${\gamma}H/c$) is used to inspect the degrading effect of undercut and cracks developed at different offset distances from the edge of the vertical escarpment. Failure patterns are also studied in detail to understand the extent and the type of failure zone which may generate during the state of collapse.

  • The radiation characteristics of the subreflector of a shaped dual offset reflector antenna are analyzed by the uniform theory of diffraction(UTD). The discrete shaped subreflector profile is transformed into an analytic function by the global interpolation. To obtain the first and the second derivative terms on the surface, the local interpolation method is used. The reflection point needed for the geometrical optics(GO) is found by using the multi-dimensional function minimizing algorithm. The radiation pattern of a Gregorian type shaped subreflector is presented. The characteristics of the radiation patterns for various feed edge taperings and frequencies are examined.

  • In this paper, we develop an automatic coin calculation system by using digital image processing. Existing schemes have the problem that is not able to exclude non-circular shape from the calculation. We propose a method to detect only coins which have circular form by applying the circular Hough transform(CHT). However, the CHT has the drawback that detects multiple circles even for just one coin because of shadow noise, the patterns on coins, and non-circular edge detection. We propose a post processing algorithm to overcome these limitations. The proposed system was implemented and successfully calculated the coin amount in the case that non-circular objects are mixed with coins.

  • Thermo-mechanical behavior of flip-chip plastic ball grid array (FC-PBGA) packages are characterized by high sensitive $Moir{\acute{e}}$ interferometry. $Moir{\acute{e}}$ fringe patterns are recorded and analyzed for several temperatures. Deformation analysis of bending displacements of the packages and average strains in the solder balls for a single-sided package assembly and a double-sided package assembly are presented. The bending displacement of the double-sided package assembly is smaller than that of the single-sided one. The largest of effective strain occurred in the solder ball located at the edge of the chip and its magnitude of the double-sided package assembly is greater than that of single-sided one.

  • This paper propose a method of shape analysis and representation for the handwritten Hangul character patterns. Each of the connected components composing a Hangul character is decomposed into many parts, and skeletons are extracted from the decomposed parts. Using the results, we represent the shape of Hangul characters using the attributed graph representation. A node of the attributed graph represents a part and an edge represents their relationships and they store valuable informations of the pattern shapes.

  • In this paper, we report a new scheme of multimode fiber sensor which uses pattern matching method. Fiber speckle pattern allows the wide dynamic range of the intensity based sensor. The proposed method uses pre-built specklegram database which is made by image processing techniques of wavelet transform and edge detection for the sake of compact data storage and fast sensing time. We demonstrate our proposed sensor and the experimental results will do presented.

  • This paper investigates edge effects on the relationship between the underlying tonal sequence and its surface realization in the IP-final Accentual Phrase within the Optimality Theoretic framework. I will examine the way in which AP tones are aligned with their associated syllables in IP-final position. In Korean. Jun's (1996) 'see-saw effect' does not allow any two identical tones if they are marking a boundary of a prosodic group. A phonetic experiment conducted in this paper suggests that the 'see-saw effect' only apply to H boundary tones. Furthermore, it will be shown that the timing of tonal peaks is determined through the ranking of a set of violable constraints. The AP tonal realization is achieved through the access to the global intonation in a complicated way. In the course of discussion, pitch patterns in IP-medial Accentual Phrase will also be discussed.
