  • The Korean cattle industry is important to farming households, the national economy, and the security of foodstuffs in Korea. Since Korean cattle have had inferior ability to produce meat, the Korean cattle industry aimed to improve the meat production ability and to increase numbers to meet the demand from the growing beef cattle market in Korea. This paper reviews the history of the Korean cattle industry and surveys the efforts devoted to improve genetic abilities of the Korean cattle. Discussed are current situations of the Korean cattle industry, projects related to improvement of Korean cattle, Korean cattle's genetic characteristics of economic traits, and some issues to deal with.

  • The genus Aphelenchoides (Fischer, 1894) includes a diverse group of species, some of which are of economic importance. A. bicaudatus (Imamura, 1931) Filipjev and Schuurmans Stekhoven, 1941 is reported for the first time from South Korea, with a detailed redescription of the species. Specimens were collected from chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) leaves and shoot tips in South Korea. The species was identified by morphological traits and molecular sequencing. A bifurcated tail distinguishes A. bicaudatus from its congeneric species. To confirm species identification, we determined the partial 18S ribosomal DNA sequence of the specimens and compared with those obtained from other Aphelenchoides species available on GenBank.

  • LOD scores and a permutation test for detecting and locating quantitative trait loci (QTL) from the Hanwoo economic trait have been described and we selected a considerable major BMS1167 locus for further analysis. K-means clustering analysis, for the major DNA marker mining of BMS1167 microsatellite loci in Hanwoo chromosome17, has been tried and three cluster groups divide four traits. The three cluster groups are classified according to eight DNA marker bps. Finally, we employed the bootstrap test method to calculate confidence intervals using the resampling method to find major DNA markers. We conclude that the major marker of BMS1167 locus in Hanwoo chromosome17 is only DNA marker 100bp.

  • The purpose of this study were (1) to thumbnail sketch of present general condition of foreigners and international marriage in Korea, (2) to study special trend of international marriage in rural Korea, particularly immigration connected with poverty, and (3) to focus on prospect of the problem of mixed-bloods, especially half blood children in rural Korea. Many of foreigners were treated discriminatingly, for example racial discrimination and wage discrimination. And discrimination to mixed-blood children will be happen in future. They are in a disadvantageous position because of economic status and appearances. Half blood children have korean nationality because one of his parent is korean. When they grow up and reach their the age of puberty and the age of working, they will resist to discrimination in working and marriage. I had examined precedent studies, and class theory in general, and to suggest it is time to looking for way of reduce social cost and way of coexistence.

  • This study investigated perceptions of early childhood teachers about children of Female International Marriage Migrants(FIMM) and their classroom conditions. Data was collected from 117 teachers of kindergartens and day care centers in Jeonnam Province using a 28-item inventory composed of classroom conditions and perceptions of teachers about the children of FIMM. Results showed that over 70% of teachers' students were children of FIMM. Children's traits included poor language skills, confusion of identity, and socio-emotional problems due to passive interaction with peers. Programs specifically for FIMM and their children are rare. Teachers considered difficulties teaching children of FIMM are due to lack of economic support, hardship of managing multicultural curriculum, restrictions in application of that curriculum, and institutional inertia.

  • Investigations into fatty acid composition in meats are becoming more important due to consumer demand for high quality healthy food. Marker-assisted selection has been applied to livestock to improve meat quality by directly selecting animals for favorable alleles that affect economic traits. Quantitative trait loci affecting fatty acid composition in cattle and pigs were investigated, and five candidate genes (ACACA, FASN, SCD, FABPs, and SREBP-1) were significantly associated with fatty acid composition. The information presented here should provide valuable guidelines to detect causative mutations affecting fatty acid composition in cattle and pigs.

  • Epistasis that may explain a large portion of the phenotypic variation for complex economic traits of animals has been ignored in many genetic association studies. A Baysian method was introduced to draw inferences about multilocus genotypic effects based on their marginal posterior distributions by a Gibbs sampler. A simulation study was conducted to provide statistical powers under various unbalanced designs by using this method. Data were simulated by combined designs of number of loci, within genotype variance, and sample size in unbalanced designs with or without null combined genotype cells. Mean empirical statistical power was estimated for testing posterior mean estimate of combined genotype effect. A practical example for obtaining empirical statistical power estimates with a given sample size was provided under unbalanced designs. The empirical statistical powers would be useful for determining an optimal design when interactive associations of multiple loci with complex phenotypes were examined.

  • The Korea urbanization has been accelerated without regard to regional traits and the environment. Most of rural areas have been overurbanized with proper and long term plan. Especially the case of Yongin-community which is located 50km south of Seoul reveals a typical wrong urbanization policy. Evidence of such wrong policy is proved by this study for last three decades(1970-2000) in political economic approach with special reference to the Manuel Castells' theory. The study concludes that urbanization with no proper development plan is mostly vulnerable and wasteful. And the environment is once spoiled, it is almost impossible to recover, so it is necessary for us long term and proper plan before development.

  • It is known that human disease and the economic traits of livestock are significantly affected by a gene combination effect rather than a single gene effect. Existing methods to study this gene combination effect have disadvantages such as heavy computing, cost and time; therefore, to overcome those drawbacks, the SNPHarvester was developed to find the main gene combinations. In this paper, we looked for gene combinations using an adjusted linear regression model. This research finds that superior gene combinations which are related to the quality of the Korean beef cattle among sets of SNPs using SNPHarvester. We also identify the superior genotypes using a decision tree that can enhance the various qualities of Korean beef among selected a SNP combination.
