  • The purpose of this study was to research the effects of socio-demographic factors and values in each group on satisfaction with life by categorizing the activity types of the elderly into volunteer work and economic activities. The subjects of this study were 60 years an old higher. The questionnaires were categorized depending on activity types and collected. The voluntary work group consisted of 201 people (76 males, 36.8% and 125 females, 62.2%), The economic activity group consisted of 219 people (127 males, 58.0% and 92 females, 42.0%). The SPSS 14.0 Windows program was used to analyze data. Frequency, average, standard deviation, factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, One-Way ANOVA analysis, and hierarchical multiple linear regression were analyzed. The major findings of this study indicate that the elderly in the voluntary work group have a high collectivism value, higher income earned by performing economic activities, and good cognitive health affected by a high satisfaction with life. From these research results, it was proved that a collectivism value is a common factor that affects satisfaction with life in both of the economic activity group. Those who were older had a traditional collectivism value. The voluntary work group showed a stronger collectivism value and higher satisfaction with life than the economic activity group. Thus, the diverse types of voluntary work should be developed and a systematic system should be established as methods for improving quality of life and satisfaction.

The results are as follows: for the economic environment, 70% of the elderly households receive the economic help from children, but the amount of the help is not much. Less than 20% of the households receive the pension and public assistance. Most elderly households had more assets than debt. The households tend to spend more for the necessties than for the non-necessities. The higher the income, the more the assets and the higher the consumption expenditures the higher is the life satisfaction. Therefore it is necessary to provide the elderly with opportunities to increase their income. For the housing environment, most elderly live in their own detached house with average size of 23 pyung. And there is 1.6 households per house. The condition of housing facilities is poor. The elderly prefer staying in the same place to moving, and invest little for their housing even though being able to afford to do so. The housing satisfaction, which is significantly influenced by the ownership the size the quality change in moving and the housing facilities, is correlated with the satisfaction of their condition as elderly households and their living satisfaction. Therefore, thoughtful policy is required to improve the standard of housing condition for the elderly households.

  • This paper has two purposes. the one was to find empirical patterns of rural and urban elderly's leisure activities, and the other was to test the effects of elderly's leisure activities on life satisfaction. the data were collected for 319 respondents aged over 50s who resided in Jeonbuk rural and urban areas. Through exploratory factor analysis, we found ten patterns of leisure activities. In addition, we conducted multiple regression analysis to test net effects of those leisure activities on life satisfaction. the results indicate that even no one pattern of leisure activities significantly influences the elderly's life satisfaction, controlling for social correlates (consisted of social structural, family relationship, personality, and socio-economic demographic variables). Rather, the respondent's level of health, level of economic status, and positive relationship with adult children have significant net effects on respondent's life satisfaction. This result suggests that the positive relationship between leisure activities and life satisfaction in the existing empirical studies might be spurious. We recommend that the further studies should conduct survey and analyze the data for affluent elderly residing in more urbanized areas.

  • The study examined the moderating effects of the relationship among purchase motivation, satisfaction, and loyalty in a farmer-to-consumer direct market. Data were collected from 426 consumers of direct sale agricultural products who visited nine rural villages across the country. The SPSS 15.0 and LISREL 8.80 statistical package were used for frequency, reliability, exploratory factor, confirmatory factor, and path analysis. Results showed that 'product factor', 'experience factor' and 'economic factor' among purchase motivation had positive effects on satisfaction and satisfaction had positive effects on loyalty. The analysis also indicated that gender moderated the relationship among purchase motivation, satisfaction, and loyalty. Whereas product and economic factors among purchase motivations had positive effects on satisfaction in the male group, product and experience motivation were important factors for female group. These results could enable direct sales marketers to develop marketing techniques to expand farm sales.
