Plant species have shown the capability to absorb U into the biomass. Norman(l952) even suggested that uranyl ion acts as an accessory microelement in growth of Lemna and flax roots. The plants, termed metal hyperaccumulators, can extract and accumulate more than 1000-10,000mg heavy metal per kilogram of dry weight of plants (0.1-1%). The most vital main factors influencing the ability and efficiency of phytoremediation is the ability of the plant to uptake the metals from soil before the accumulation mechanism happens in the plant tissue. Legumes are important agricultural and commercial crops characterized by root nodules formed as a result of the symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia. Due to the economic significance the chemistry of some of these species has been well recognized. Soybeans and processed soy products, which contain isoflavonoids and saponins, are of wide interest for their multifacted biological effects. (omitted)
In the energy-guzzling industries such as steel making and cement, power plants utilizing waste heat have been attracting attention to increase energy efficiency. However, the existing economic analysis system doesn't consider the special working fluids and the cost models of the main equipment used in the waste heat recovery power plant. So it is difficult to estimate the plant economics accurately. Therefore, It is required to develop a economic analysis module that can more accurately evaluate for the power plant. In this study, the systems engineering approach was used to design and develop the module that systematically reflects the characteristics of the power plant and various requirements. Specifically, first, the special working fluids and main equipment applied to the power plant were investigated. Next, the cost models for each equipment were developed. Finally, the economic analysis module based on this was developed.
This paper represents an analysis of the economic impact of firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures in diesel engine power plants. The objects of analysis is a power plant with electricity generation capacity (300 kW). Using performance data of original diesel engines, the fuel consumption characteristics of the duel fuel engines were simulated. Then, economic assessment was carried out using the performance data and the net present value method. A special focus was given to the evaluation of fuel cost saving when firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures instead of the pure diesel firing case. Analyses were performed by assuming fuel price changes in the market as well as by using current prices. The analysis results showed that co-firing of natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil would provide considerable fuel cost saving, leading to meaningful economic benefits.
The objectives of this study are to analyze the possibility of the landfill gas recycling for the middle and small scale landfills where the recycling facilities are not installed in Korea. It was found that the power generation plants by landfill gas were installed in domestic 15 landfills and the gas engine generation was adopted in 14 places. As the result of economic analysis, the landfill gas recycling is found to be available in 12 places and CERs of 153,693 $tCO_{2e}$ can be secured per year. Through the reduction of the air pollutants and VOCs, the social benefits of 730 million won accrue per year. Also, the power production of 18.8 GWh will substitute the crude oil imports of 4,048 TOE and the revenue of 2.49 billion won is expected to power trading. It is also found that the power generation plants by landfill gas will give the social benefits such as the reduction of the environmental problems and the substitution effect of crude oil imports.
Hydro-electric power generation from multi-purpose dams has been playing important roles in the electric power supply network in Korea. Although the total share of hydro power in national electricity supply now becomes very small, the peak-shaving and frequency control capability of hydro power helps the power company enormously in maintaining the quality of power. But since the company that builds and operates the multi-purpose dams in Korea has to sell all the electricity produced to the monopolistic utility, there have been various problems in justifying the investment, designing pricing mechanism, and controlling operations of the power plants. In addition, economic evaluation of the hydro power has been distorted by a variety of reasons and hence it has been very difficult to encourage effective development and utilization of national water resources. To make the problem worse, both parties are public companies with X-inefficiency problems. Thus, changing environment requires to reengineer the system that governs hydro power generation. We address the problems of Korean hydro-electric power generation system in four areas: the investment justification process, the operations decison right of the hydro power plants, the pricing of the purchased-power, and the negotiation of contract revision. Then we propose improvement directions of new hydro-electric power system in view of static and dynamic efficiency, X-inefficiency and equity.

The heavy metal contents are more abundant in stream waters, paddy soils and rice plants in the vicinity of abandoned mines compared to the surrounding areas in the Kyungpook province. However, these contents tend to decrease with distance from mines, and show some variation under different geological and geochemical environments. The Sin-stream waters have high contents of Cu=4.9 ppm, Pb=0.1 ppm, Zn=3.5 ppm and other heavy metals (Ni, Co, Cd) at Dalsung abandoned mine and low contents of Cu=0.4 ppm, Pb=0.1 ppm, Zn=0.1 ppm and other metals= 0.002 ppm in the surrounding area. The high contents decrease in the downstream in the area of calcareous sedimentary rocks. The paddy soils have high contents of approximately Cu=51 ppm, Pb=83 ppm, Zn=211 ppm, and Cd=11.3 ppm in the vicinity of Gunwi abandoned mine but low contents of Cu=4.5 ppm, Pb=2.9 ppm, Zn=60 ppm and Cd=0.4 ppm in the surrounding area. The Dadeog abandoned mine also shows similar trends to Gunwi mine. The contents of heavy metals of rice plants are high in the roots but trends to decrease through stem+leaf and become low in brown rices.
