Objectives: This study was conducted in order to obtain information concerning the health hazards that may result from a 13 week inhalation exposure of n-pentane in Sprague-Dawley rats. Methods: This study was conducted in accordance with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidelines for the testing of chemicals No. 413 'Subchronic inhalation toxicity: 90-day study (as revised in 2009)'. The rats were divided into 4 groups (10 male and 10 female rats in each group), and were exposed to 0, 340, 1,530, and 6,885 ppm n-pentane in each exposure chamber for 6 hour/day, 5 days/week, for 13 weeks. All of the rats were sacrificed at the end of the treatment period. During the test period, clinical signs, mortality, body weights, food consumption, ophthalmoscopy, locomotion activity, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, gross findings, organ weights, and histopathology were assessed. Results: During the period of testing, there were no treatment related effects on the clinical findings, body weight, food consumption, ophthalmoscopy, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, gross findings, relative organ weight, and histopathological findings. Conclusion: The no-observable-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of n-pentane is evaluated as being more than 6,885 ppm (20.3 mg/L) in both male and female rats. n-pentane was not a classified specific target organ toxicity in the globally harmonized classification system (GHS).
This study aims to explore the relationship between housewives' health KAP level and the physical health of families. The data used in this study are obtained from the Last Evaluation Program of the National Note for Health surveyed in July, 1989. The respondents for this study are 770 housewives residing in Chunan and Buan. The reason why this study focus on KAP level of housewives is to find out whether a housewife as a emotional supporter contributes to the physical health of her families. A housewife gives her families emotional satisfaction insteade of economic satisfaction. So she has the most interest in family health among the members of her family. Therefore, housewife's KAP level will influence her family health. The independent variables chosen for the analysis are the general characteristic variables and KAP level. And the dependent variable is the physical health of families which excluded psychosocial one. This level of family health includes weight for family health and seriouseness of disease. The result of this study was summarized as follows. (1) KAP level was significantly correlated with variables which have mainly the socioeconomic characteristics. The variables were: area of residence, education level occupation, self assessment on wealth, and exposure to mass communication. (2) In the analysis of relationship between the general characteristic variables and family health, family health was significantly correlated with almost all variables. The variables were: Presence of the aged, Health status, Experience in disease, Self assessment on health, No. of families, Occupation, Education level, Self assessment on wealth, Concern on health, and Exposure to mass communication. (3) In the analysis of relationship between family health and KAP level, family health was not significantly correlated with KAP level but. (4) Also in the stepwise regression analysis, the general variables account for about 32.1 percent of the variance in the dependent variable, family health. The variable with the greatest explanatory power was presence of the aged. On the contrary, KAP level explain about 0.4 percent of the variance in the dependent variable. In sum, the study shows that housewives' health KAP level has relatively weak relationship with the physical health of families
Introduction: Upper aero-digestive tract cancer is a multidimensional problem, international trends showing complex rises and falls in incidence and mortality across the globe, with variation across different cultural and socio-economic groups. This paper seeks some explanations and identifies some research and policy needs. Methodological Approach: The literature illustrates the multifactorial nature of carcinogenesis. At the cellular level, it is viewed as a multistep process involving multiple mutations and selection for cells with progressively increasing capacity for proliferation, survival, invasion, and metastasis. Established and emerging risk factors, in addition to changes in incidence and prevalence of cancers of the upper aero-digestive tract, were identified. Risk Factors: Exposure to tobacco and alcohol, as well as diets inadequate in fresh fruits and vegetables, remain the major risk factors, with persistent infection by particular so-called "high risk" genotypes of human papillomavirus increasingly recognised as also playing an important role in a subset of cases, particularly for the oropharynx. Chronic trauma to oral mucosa from poor restorations and prostheses, in addition to poor oral hygiene with a consequent heavy microbial load in the mouth, are also emerging as significant risk factors. Conclusions: Understanding and quantifying the impact of individual risk factors for these cancers is vital for health decision-making, planning and prevention. National policies and programmes should be designed and implemented to control exposure to environmental risks, by legislation if necessary, and to raise awareness so that people are provided with the information and support they need to adopt healthy lifestyles.
Objectives: We have investigated the toxic effects of the inhalation of subchronic and acute levels of n-octane. Methods: The rats were exposed to n-octane of 0, 2.34, 11.68 and 23.36 mg/L (n = 5 rats/group/gender) in an acute inhalation test (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) TG 403), or to 0, 0.93, 2.62 and 7.48 mg/L (n = 10 rats/group/gender) for a subchronic inhalation test (OECE TG 413), to establish a national chemical management system consistent with the Globally Harmonized Classification System (GHS). Results: Acutely-exposed rats became lethargic but recovered following discontinuation of inhalation. Other clinical symptoms such as change of body weight and autopsy finds were absent. The LC50 for the acute inhalation toxicity of n-octane was determined to exceed 23.36 mg/L and the GHS category was 'not grouping'. Subchronically-treated rats displayed no significant clinical and histopathological differences from untreated controls; also, target organs were affected hematologically, biochemically and pathologically. Therefore, the no observable adverse effect level was indicated as exceeding 7.48 mg/L and the GHS category was 'not grouping' for the specific target organ toxicity upon repeated exposure. Conclusion: However, n-octane exposure should be controlled to be below the American Conference of Industrial Hygienists recommendation (300 ppm) to prevent inhalation-related adverse health effects of workers.
Along with the aging society, the prevalence of dementia is also increasing. Dementia causes short-term memory loss as well as difficulties of performing daily activities and gradually causes suffering of the patients and their family. In spite of various programs for prevention of dementia of older people are being implemented, there is a lack of developing natural-based program for physical and mental health promotion. Therefore, it is necessary to develop programs for the elderly living alone who are more vulnerable to dementia because of their social and economic isolation. The purpose of this study was to develop a natural-based program and investigate the effects of 10 weeks forest therapy program for dementia prevention to improve the psychological and physical health of the elderly living alone. The experimental subjects were 30 elderly (aged 65 or older) and 31 elderly participated in control group. The Stress response, depressive symptoms, weight, body mass index (BMI), fat mass and muscle mass were measured for pre and post test. The results showed that the experimental group showed subjective stress relief (t=5.249, p=.000), improvement in symptoms of depression (t=4.152, p=.000), and decreases in weight (t=2.686, p=.012), BMI (t=2.629, p=.014) and fat mass (t=2.918, p=.007) after the forest therapy program. The experimental group showed lower stress reactions(t=-7.185, p=.000) and less depressive symptoms (t=-5.303, p=.000) than control group after participating the program. These results suggest that periodic forest exposure can help having less stressful and depressive status than non-forest exposure and the forest therapy program can reduce participants' psychological and physical risk factors of dementia.
Permissible soil concentrations for explosives (i.e., TNT and RDX) and heavy metals (i.e., Cu, Zn, Pb, and As) heve been derived from human risk and ecotoxicity, respectively. For TNT and RDX, human risk based-permissible soil concentrations were determined as 460 mg-TNT/kg-soil and 260 mg-RDX/kg-soil. Ecotoxicity based-permissible soil concentrations for Cu and Zn were determined from species sensitivity distribution (SSD) and uncertainty factor of 1 to 5, yielding 18.0-40.0 mg-Cu/kg-soil and 46.0-100 mg-Zn/kg-soil. For Pb and As, ecotoxicity data were not enough to establish SSD so that a deterministic method was used, generating 13.8-30.8 mg-Pb/kg-soil and 2.10-4.60 mg-As/kg-soil. It is worth noting that the methodology used to derive permissible concentrations in soil can differ depending on ecotoxicity data availability and socio-economic situations, which results in different permissible concentrations. The permissible concentrations presented in this study have been derived from conservative assumptions for exposure parameters, and thus should be considered as soil standards. In the light of remediation and pollution management of a site of interest, the site-specific and receptor-specific permissible soil concentrations should be derived considering potential receptors, current and future land use, background concentrations, and socio-economic consultation.
This study has been made for the enlargement of a previous work of 1964 which was carried out by an author of this work emphasizing the stratigraphy, micropaleontology, depositional environment, and structural tectonics of the studied area. The stratigraphic sequences of the area are groupped into four units: (1) basement of Pre-Cretaceous, (2) lower sediments of Late Cretaceous, (3) upper sediments of Late Cretaceous and (4) igneous rocks of Late Cretaceous and Tertiary (?). The oldest rocks consisting of schists and gneisses of Pre-Cambrian and schistose granite' of Jurassic age are exposed at the base of this area on which the thick Cretaceous sediments were deposited. These old rocks are unconformably overlain by the lower sedimens of Late Cretaceous composed of three members, an alternation of black shale and tuffaceous sediments, fine tuff and rhyollite flow in ascending order. The oily material was found from the black shales of the alternation m"ember as semi-solid greaselike material, oily order and microscopic granular spherical material and oily stain. The lower sediments are also overlain, in low-angleunconfromity, by the 'upper sediments having three members, an alternation of volcanic conglomerate and andesitic tuff, rhyollitic tuff and andesite flow in the same order. The igneous suit of diabase, diorites, biotite granite, porphyritic granite and porphyries of the latest Cretaceous and small exposure of pitchstone of Tertiary (?) intruded into the pre-existed rocks above mentioned. Considerable amount of ostra- coda microfossils have been chemically extracted from the black shales of the lower sediments and the identification of the fossils suggests that the depositional environment of the sediments were under fresh or brackish water condition. The distribution of the geology and its tectonic data also suggest a combination of dome and basin structures in the area of San-i peninsula and Jin-do as shown in fig. 8. Between these two units an anticlinal structure was constructed. As a result of this study, a seismic survey in a district between U-su-yong and north coast of Jin-do is recommended to determine the underground features.
Yugu-Kwangcheon Au-Ag Province is connected to the southwestern part of the Cheonan Province and includes the Gubong (one of the biggest gold mine in past), Daebong and Samgwang mines. Cadmium concentrations in sphalerite of Yugu-Kwancheon Province is higher than those of other Au-Ag provinces and could be the source of the heavy metal contaminations. Heavy metals are present in rock-soil-plant-human system from natural geological materials, and dietary intake through this system makes a significant contribution to the ingestion of heavy metals by man. In order to examine the degree and extent of heavy metal contaminations in the Gubong, Daebong and Samgwang mine areas of Yugu-Kwangcheon Province, soil, stream water, sediment and crop plant samples were taken and analyzed for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). Cadmium and Pb concentrations in paddy/farm soils and stream sediments from the Gubong and Samgwang mine areas are higher than those in uncontaminated soils. Lead concentrations in crop plants cultivated in these soils are high up to $0.38{\mu}g/g$ in rice grain and $4.5{\mu}g/g$ in sesame. In these mine areas, regular consumption of crop plants by the local population would seem to pose a potential health problems from long-term Pb exposure. The biological absorption coefficient in rice grain for heavy metals varies in the order $C_d=Zn>Cu>Pb$ and the relationship between Cd concentrations in soils and crop plants is expressed by the equation $Cd_{plant}=0.11245\;Log\;Cd_{soil}+0.13472$.
A petrological study has been done in the pyeongchang-Jaecheon area which is a northwestern part of the basement of Ogcheon zone for the purpose of comparison of the area to the Nogjeon-Yeongchun area which is the antipodal basement of the zone in the petrological and geotectonical view points. The major units of the area are Precambrian granitic gneissic complex, banded gneiss, linea ted leucocratic gneiss and pegmatitic leucogranitic gneiss in the west, elongated exposure of quartz schist (or partly quartzite) and phyllite, named as Jungdaegal-bong Group correlated to the lower sequence of Joseon Group, in the middle, and limestone and calcic dolomite, Iptanri Formation, correlated to the middle of Joseon Group in the east. Igneous plutons are distributed in the areas of gneissic complex and limestone formation as well as in the Eosangcheon and Daedaeri areas in the southeastern out of the area. Present study reveals that the gneissic complex are the products of granitization to metamorphism of amphibolite facies in the order of above mentioned from the metasediments of schists and calcareous rocks. A notable characteristics of the phyllite of Jungdaegal-bong Group is the presence of syntectonically segregated quartz rods in the forms of lens, swirl or boudinage in evenly distributed in the phyllitic to chloritic matrix. Igneous rocks range in composition from gabbro through diorite, granodiorite, to schistosed and porphyritic granites in stock and dike. The orogenic movement of the Ogcheon zone initiated in the middle Proterozoic time, pre-sedimentation of Ogcheon Group and superposed the granitization in Permian, Jurassic Daebo orogeny with granitic batholiths and stocks, and Cretaceous plutonic intrusion.
