  • The purposes of this study are to examine the economic conditions and parenting of custodial fathers/mothers and to explain their impacts on the children's social adjustment after divorce. A total of 185 custodial parents divorced within the last 5 years completed a structured questionnaire. Children's social adjustment was the dependent variable in this study and was defined as their school performance and behavior problems. Results show that compared with divorced custodial fathers, divorced custodial mothers demonstrate more effective parenting, but there were no differences in economic conditions between them. In addition, children in single-father divorced families have lower school grades and more behavior problems than those in single-mother divorced families. Results also indicate that the economic conditions and parenting have different effects for children across family type. For children raised with a custodial father in divorced families, the economic conditions and the divorce duration are associated with lower school grades and behavior problems. For children with a custodial mother, however, the effective of parenting and the children's age have significant effects on the children's social adjustment after the parent divorced. Based on these results, this study proposes strategies for the improvement of children's adjustment in divorced families.

  • The problem addressed by this study were to explore the effect of hardiness on psychosocial adjustment of persons with a colostomy and to identify factors which influence that psychosocial adjustment. The purpose was to suggest a theoretical base for the planning of supportive nursing interventions to increase the level of adjustment. Among members of the Korea Ostomy Association, 34 subjects who had undergone colostomy from March, 1990 to March, 1991 were selected as the sample. Data were collected from April 8 to May 8, 1991 using a mailed questionnaire. The instruments used for this study were the Health -Related Hardiness Scale(Pollock, 1984) and the Psychosocial Adjustment to illness Scale (Derogatis, 1975). ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and Stepswise Multiple Regression were used for data analysis. The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. Hardiness was significantly related to psychosocial adjustment(p=0.009). That is, the higher the hardiness, the higher the level of psychosocial adjustment. 2. Among the demographic variables, only economic level was significantly related to the level of psychosocial adjustment. (p=0.005). 3. The important factors influencing the level of psychosocial adjustment of persons with a colostomy were economic level, commitment, challenge (subconcepts of hardiness). Therefore, in order to increase the level of the psychosocial adjustment, it might be helpful to provide them with hardiness training to strengthen their commitment and their challenge.

  • Seasonal adjustment is useful to provide a better understanding of underlying trends in Korean economic statistics. The seasonal component also includes calendar effects such as Seol and Chuseok. Most popular seasonal adjustment methods are X-12-ARIMA of the U.S. Bureau of the Census and TRAMO-SEATS of the Bank of Spain. Statistics Korea and the Bank of Korea compile seasonally adjusted series of several Korean economic statistics. This paper illustrates basic principles for seasonal adjustment and the current status of seasonal adjustment in Korea based on previous research. In addition, several issues on seasonal adjustment are addressed.

  • The current method of rate adjustment for inflation is based on the evaluation of the financial performance of hospitals. The method has the disadvantage such as too complicated, expensive process as well as low reliability. This study, therefore, develops the 'Korean Medical Insurance Economic Index(MIEI)' as a new model for the rate adjustment with the use of the macro economic indices. In addition, we calculate the 1992∼1998 rate adjustment with the MIEI, and examines the validity of the MIEI by comparing with the conventional method. Medical costs are classified into nine categories : physician salaries, nurse·pharmacist·medical technician salaries, assistants & others salaries, material cost(by imports), material cost(by domestics), depreciation & rent paid(by imports), depreciation & rent paid(by domestics), power utilities, other administrative costs. Then the category weight which is the ratio of category in the total cost is calculated. Macro economic indices are selected for each cost category in order to reflect the concept of the each cost category and inflation during the year of 1992∼1998. Finally MIEI which integrate all category according to the category weight and selected macro indices is calculated. The mean of hospital MIEI which weighting by amount paid by insurers was cacluated. The result from the application of empirical data to the MIEI model is very similar to that of the current method. Furthermore, this method is very simple and also easy to get social consensus. This MIEI model can be replaced the current method based on the analysis of the financial performance for the adjustment of medical fees.

  • The present investigation of the relations among economic hardship, parental child-rearing attitudes and adjustment in adolescence was carried out with 528 middle school children and their mothers in Kyung-gi province. Questionnaires for mothers were on economic stress, and children's questionnaires were on perceived parental attitudes as well as their own adjustment behaviors, such as aggression, depression, and negative self-concept. Adolescent boys perceived paternal child-rearing attitudes more rejecting and inconsistent when the family experienced income loss. Paternal nurturing behaviors perceived by children were also reduced under poor paternal working conditions. Change in family life style due to economic hardship resulted in higher adolescent depression.

  • This study examined the effects of children's perceived stress of economic strain, resulting family conflict, and stress coping strategies on their adjustment. Dimensions of children's adjustment studied in this research were problem behaviors (aggression, delinquency, withdrawal and anxiety depression) and school adjustment. Interaction effects between children's stress variables and coping strategies on the adjustment were also explored. 1,115 fifth to eighth graders from Chungbuk regions participated in self-administered structured questionnaires. Data were processed with SPSS PC 10.0 statistical package. Results were: First, the level of children's problem behaviors and school adjustment indicated differences according to their academic achievement, gender, and their age. Middle schoolers with rather low grade average reported higher level of aggression, delinquency, withdrawal and that of depression/anxiety. Boys tended to be more prone to external problems while girls to internal problems. Second, stresses originated from children's perceived economic strain and family conflicts showed consistent meaningful explanatory power on adjustment. Boys' adjustment was influenced by stress from economic strain and family conflict while girls by family conflict and academic achievements. The support seeking coping strategy among others was the most popularly employed coping strategy of children followed by aggressive coping strategy. In boys' cases, interaction effects of stress and coping strategies were significant in all of the adjustment variables, the more frequent the use of support seeking coping strategies, the lower the problem behavior, while interaction effect of family conflict stress and support seeking coping strategies played the opposite significant role in girls' cases. Further research efforts are required. Research results suggest; when developing a program facilitating children's adjustment, training on stress coping strategies should be considered as a potent new arena of interest.

The adolescent' overall level of school adjustment was found to be at a moderate level. 4. The adolescents' levels of school adjustment were differed by birth order, father's occupations, family structures, economic status of the family, grade point average and religion. 5. The stepwise regression analyses yielded the results that relationship with the teacher, relationship with the peer, father's caring, birth order and economic status of family were significant factors in explaining the adolescents' school adjustment. On the base of the results of the study, the following suggestions were made in order to enhance adolescents' school adjustment: 1.
