Subsequent application of self-organizing map and hidden Markov models infer community states of stream benthic macroinvertebrates

  • Because an ecological community consists of diverse species that vary nonlinearly with environmental variability, its dynamics are complex and difficult to analyze. To investigate temporal variations of benthic macroinvertebrate community, we used the community data that were collected at the sampling site in Baenae Stream near Busan, Korea, which is a clean stream with minimum pollution, from July 2006 to July 2013. First, we used a self-organizing map (SOM) to heuristically derive the states that characterizes the biotic condition of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities in forms of time series data. Next, we applied the hidden Markov model (HMM) to fine-tune the states objectively and to obtain the transition probabilities between the states and the emission probabilities that show the connection of the states with observable events such as the number of species, the diversity measured by Shannon entropy, and the biological water quality index (BMWP). While the number of species apparently addressed the state of the community, the diversity reflected the state changes after the HMM training along with seasonal variations in cyclic manners. The BMWP showed clear characterization of events that correspond to the different states based on the emission probabilities. The environmental factors such as temperature and precipitation also indicated the seasonal and cyclic changes according to the HMM. Though the usage of the HMM alone can guarantee the convergence of the training or the precision of the derived states based on field data in this study, the derivation of the states by the SOM that followed the fine-tuning by the HMM well elucidated the states of the community and could serve as an alternative reference system to reveal the ecological structures in stream communities.

Do Physiognomically Designated Protected Areas Match Well with Ecological Data based upon Diversity Indices and Ordination? Implications for Urban Forest Conservation

  • We surveyed the vegetation of an ecological landscape preservation area (legally protected conservation areas or national parks) and the surrounding areas of Mt. Cheonggye, Republic of Korea, to explore the conservation implications for preservation areas and surrounding transition areas. We calculated diversity indices to identify the properties of the preservation and surrounding areas that are relevant to conservation efforts. We then compared the plant community composition between the areas using field and quadrat surveys in the preservation and surrounding areas. The cover of the dominant species in all tree and herb layers was markedly higher in the preservation area than in the peripheral zones. The species richness indices were significantly higher in the preservation area than in the peripheral zones. Ordination using detrended canonical correspondence analyses showed that the cover of the dominant tree species and rocks could explain the distribution of plant species in the Cartesian space of the ordination. Our results demonstrate that physiognomically designated protected areas match well with ecological data based on diversity indices and ordination analyses and that disturbances in the areas surrounding the ecological landscape of preservation areas can have considerable impacts on plant diversity indices. Hence, the preservation and management of surrounding areas are essential conservation elements for protecting the entire ecological landscape of preservation areas.

부모기로의 전이기 어머니의 부모교육 참여경험과 생태체계적 접근에 기반한 관련 변인 연구 (Parenting Education Participation of Mothers in the Transition to Parenthood and Related Variables From the Ecological Systematic Perspective)

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine parenting education participation of Korean mothers in the transition to parenthood and its related variables. Method: A study sample was composed of 870 mothers whose first child was younger than one-year old from the Panel Study on Korean Children in 2008(mean age=30.1, SD = 3.69). The descriptive statistics of parenting education participation were presented. In addition, negative binomial and logistic regression models were used in Stata13 in order to examine the variables related to parenting education participation of mothers in the transition to parenthood. Results: Approximately 82% of the mothers reported that they had participated in at least one parenting education program. Further, mother's educational level, monthly household income, mother's working experience, and community type generally predicted parenting education participation of mothers. However, the effects of these variables varied by the subjects and the providing institutions. Conclusion: This study provides the overall picture of parenting education participation of Korean mothers in the transition to parenthood and its related variables. The findings can be utilized to plan more effective parenting education programs for new parents.

초고층 주거복합건물의 기단부 계획특성 분석에 관한 연구 (A Study on Characteristic of Super-Tall Mixed-Use Residential Building in the Outdoor Transition Zone)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze architectural plans of lower part of super tall mixed-use residential building for understanding its functions for urban. The area of this research are limited to super tall mixed-use residential building which were built in Seoul, Kyoung-gi area, and new towns. For this purpose, theories for super tall mixed-use residential building and non-housing parts were researched, and characteristics of selected cases for field research were analyzed by studying drawing materials. The research focused on scale, type of building, included programs for public spaces, and characteristics of location. As a result, every cases were designed as 'outdoor transition zone-centered type', and for urban function, non-housing facilities were condensed to increase convenience. In addition, ratio of non-housing part were incresesed with public spaces design for residents, and various programs were inserted.

Sibling Recognition and Nepotism in the Subsocial Funnel Web Spider, Coelotes terrestris (Araneae, Amaurobiidae)

  • Cooperative or non-territorial permanently social spiders are believed to have evolved from species showing subsocial maternal care. The transition from subsocial to cooperative social groups probably involved a transition from an outbreeding breeding system to one with inbreeding. Nepotistic recognition among siblings should facilitate the evolution of social cooperation through avoidance of inbreeding and maintenance of mutual tolerance between siblings. We conducted experiments to determine whether a mechanism for sibling recognition is present in the subsocial spider, Coelotes terrestris which displays extended maternal care in the form of food provisioning. The numbers of surviving individuals within unfed groups were observed and compared between non-sibling groups of ten spiderlings and groups of ten siblings. The number of survivors differed significantly between groups, with consistently fewer spiderlings surviving in the non-sibling groups than the sibling groups over the study period. This result suggests that sibling recognition and nepotism do occur in this subsocial species. The nepotism involved in the maternal social organization of the Coelotes might be an example of a preadaptation facilitating the evolution of permanent social life.

낙동강 중·하류 지역의 수변 특성에 관한 연구 (Riparian Area Characteristics of the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Nakdong River, Korea)

  • As a transition zone between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, riparian areas of rivers and streams play significant roles in production and decomposition for river and stream systems. Understanding of the physical and ecological characteristics of riparian areas are, therefore, important for the management of river and stream systems. It is especially important to understand the characteristics of riparian areas for the Nakdong River in Korea which has a large watershed area and diverse land uses. This study aimed at collecting field data, according to stream types, which are essential for the management of riparian areas of the middle and lower reaches of the Nakdong River, Korea. Most riparian areas surveyed in this study had roads within 100 meters from river edges. Distances from water edge to banks were less than 1m for most riparian areas neighboring agricultural lands, indicating that those areas might be very vulnerable to pollutant inputs from non-point sources. Water quality data indicated that soil erosion in the riparian areas could be a major source of phosphorus input to the Nakdong River and land use patters might have a significant influence on nitrogen concentration in the river. Heavy metal concentrations in soils of the riparian areas of the river were below soil quality standards, except arsenic and chromium. Vegetation surveys showed that therophytes were the most frequently occurred riparian plants in the Nakdong River. Number of aquatic plant species increased downstream, with the most diverse aquatic plants observed in wetlands and irrigation canals of the West Nakdong River. Occurrence rate of naturalized plants and urbanization index were high in the survey sites adjacent to urban and agricultural areas.

스마트폰 환경하에서의 효율적인 생태계 정책에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Efficient Ecological Policies under the Smart Phone Environment)

  • 어려운 세계 경제 여건 속에서도 스마트폰 산업은 높은 성장률을 보이고 있으며 이를 둘러싼 생태계 변화가 급속히 이루어지고 있다. 이런 가운데 지속적인 글로벌 경쟁력 우위를 지키기 위해서는 스마트폰과 관련된 생태계 변화를 선제적으로 파악하고 이에 알맞은 정책을 구사해 나가야 한다. 미국, 유럽을 비롯한 세계 각 국이 새로운 스마트폰 생태계에서 경쟁력을 유지하기 위해 부단히 노력하고 있다. 한국도 실기하였음을 인정하고 과거 IT 강국 위상을 되찾기 위한 노력을 하고 있다. 본고에서는 변화하는 스마트폰 생태계 속에서 각광 받게 될 새로운 범주의 서비스나 제시하고 우리 정부에서 추진하고 있는 노력에 더하여 어떠한 노력이 더 필요한가를 제시하였다. 본고가 앞으로 한국의 스마트폰 환경 하에서의 적절한 생태계 정책을 마련하는데 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

New ecological health assessment approaches of an urban stream using molecular and physiological level biomarkers and bioindicators

  • This study evaluated ecological health, using various biomarkers and bioindicators, of pale chub (Zacco platypus) as a sentinel species, in Daejeon Stream, South Korea, during AprilMay 2011. The biomarkers and bioindicators were compared among three sites of control: Reference ($C_z$), transition ($T_z$), and the urban zones ($U_z$); and the 7-Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity, DNA damage, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and vitellogenin (VTG) concentrations were more significantly increased in the $U_z$ than in the $C_z$. Also, physiological markers such as condition factor, liver somatic index, visceral somatic index, and gonad somatic index were significantly increased in the $U_z$ than in the $C_z$. For the health assessments, three categorized parameters of blood chemistry, molecular biomarkers, and physiological bioindicators were standardized and calculated as a star-plot, representing values of Integrated Health Response (IHR). Values of IHR had more significant (P<0.05) increases in the $U_z$ than any other zones, indicating an impairment of ecological health by organic matter, nutrients (N, P), and toxic chemicals. This study is based on low levels of biological organization approach of molecular and physiological biomarkers and bioindicators, so further study of high-levels of biological organization approach such as community and population is required for overall range of health assessments. The approach of IHR values, however, may be useful in providing early warning of future impacts on ecological health.

기후변화의 위기와 기독교 생태교육의 방향 모색 (The Crisis of Climate Change and the Direction of Christian Ecological Education)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 기후변화의 위기에 있어, 기독교교육이 생태학적 교육으로서 나아가야 할 방향을 모색해보는 데 있다. 기후변화가 보여주는 것은 불과 2-3도만 지구의 온도가 올라가도 생존이 불가능하다는 사실이다. 그러나 현재 우리의 모습은 삶을 변경하지 않는 한에서 기후변화의 위기를 염려하고 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 기후변화의 의미와 그 원인에 대해 살펴보았다. 인간중심주의적 세계관, 현대의 산업적, 과학기술적 성장, 그리고 소비지향적 사회구조 등을 그 원인으로 들 수 있는데, 인간중심주의적 세계관은 모든 것을 인간의 관점에서 정당화하며, 자연은 인간의 지배대상이나 하나의 도구로 간주해왔다. 또한 인간의 경제활동 규모가 커지면 커질수록 에너지 소비량은 증가하고, 이 증가에 따라 생태계 파괴의 위협도 증가한다. 개인의 소비증가와 풍요가 생태계 긴장을 가중시키는 것이다. 이러한 기후변화의 문제를 해결하기 위해서 성서 속의 창조를 통해 인간과 자연의 관계가 상생과 공존임을 규명하고, 안식의 원리를 통해 인간과 자연의 회복을 가져올 수 있으며, 성육신의 관점에서 세계를 하나님의 '몸'으로 이해하는 생태교육적 단초들을 발견하였다. 이 단초들을 토대로, 인간과 자연이 배려와 존중의 관계성을 가지는 생태적 패러다임으로의 전환, 창조영성의 회복, 청지기로서의 책임과 지구 차원의 연대를 이루어가기 위해 생태적 상상력의 함양을 제시함으로써 기독교 생태교육의 방향을 모색해보았다. 기후변화의 위기에 있어, 기독교의 생태교육적 단초들을 통한 기독교교육적 접근을 통해 지구의 회복이 이루어지고 책임적 존재로 다시금 설 수 있기를 기대해본다.

과학 기술 시대 평생교육 방향 탐색 (Exploring Direction of Lifelong Education in Age of Science and Technology)

  • 과학 기술 시대 평생교육은 국가의 교육정책의 한 방편으로 도입되면서 공적 지원이 어느 때 보다 확대되고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 과학 기술 시대에서의 평생교육의 방향을 탐색하는 데 있다. 과학 기술 시대 평생교육의 방향성을 결정하는데 다양한 요소들을 고려해야 하지만 본 연구에서는 주로 과학 기술 시대에 초점을 맞춘 방향성을 제시하면 첫째, 직업교육으로서 평생교육이 필요하며, 둘째, 디지털 심화 교육으로 평생교육이 필요하며. 셋째, 생태전환 관점에서 평생교육이 필요하다. 과학 기술 시대 평생교육의 방향은 이러한 세 가지 관점을 중요하게 생각하고 어떻게 평생교육이 구체적으로 이바지할 것인가에 대한 후속 논의가 있기를 기대한다.
