  • We developed a data reduction program (RX) to process BOES data automatically. It processes a whole set of data taken during one night automatically - preprocessing, extraction to one-dimensional spectra and wavelength calibration. The execution is very fast and the performance looks pretty good. We described the performance of this program, comparing its procedure with that of IRAF. RX does not have functions for continuum normalization yet. We will develop those functions in the next works.

  • 한국천문연구원은 미국 BBSO(Big Bear Solar Observatory)에 건설 중인 1.6 m NST(New Solar Telescope) 개발사업에 참여하고 있다.

  • We report a possible low-mass companion around the K2 III star $\varepsilon$ CrB (HD 143107). This star belongs to our sample of 55 K-giants studied for their radial velocity variations using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) attached to the 1.8-m telescope at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). Our precise radial velocity measurements were obtained from February 2005 to June 2010. We find an orbital solution with a period of P = 419 days, a semi-amplitude of K = 137 m/s, and an eccentricity of e = 0.14. Assuming a moderate stellar mass of $M_{\bigstar}=0.77\;M\odot$, we calculate the minimum mass for the companion of m sini = $4.2\;M_{Jup}$ with an orbital semi-major axis of 1.0 AU.

  • To understand about Gould Belt, we intend to study chemical abundances for two young open clusters - IC 2391 which is a member of Gould Belt and NGC 6475 which is not. UVES POP (Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph Paranal Observatory Project) provides the spectra of twelve stars in IC 2391 and five stars in NGC 6475 with spectral resolution R of 80,000. In this study, we have determined the stellar parameters (Teff, logg, metallicity, and microturbulant velocity) using Fe I and Fe II lines. The equivalent widths of iron lines have been measured by TAME. The results of stellar parameters are presented.

  • We present the results of high resolution spectral analysis for Type Ia supernova SN 2014J in M82, which was discovered on 21 January 2014 UT. We performed spectroscopic observations for SN 2014J in its early phase at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory with the high resolution echelle spectrograph BOES attached to 1.8-m reflector. Spectra of 26 epochs in 6 nights were obtained from 22 January 2014 to 23 February 2014 UT. Spectral feature variations for several significant lines including Si II and Ca II lines will be shown and discussed.

  • Simultaneous observations of high resolution spectra of CaII H, K, ${\lambda}8542\;and\;{\lambda}8498$ have been made over a sunspot umbra (SPO 5007) by means of Sacramento Peak Observatory's HIRKHAD program with the Echelle spectrograph at the Vacuum Tower Telescope. The observed spectra scanned by SPO's fast microphotometer have been reduced for later theoretical interpretations. The reduced profiles, sampled over a region which is thought to be coolest over the spot, are presented in units of absolute intensity. The core intensity ratios of $I(K_3)/I(H_3);and\;I({\lambda}8498)/I({\lambda}8542)$ arc found to be 1.3 and 1.14, respectively.

  • We present a method to improve the RV (radial velocity) measurements accuracy by using telluric lines. Telluric lines are used to estimate the wavelength scale drift over the detector of the spectrograph. In the case of BOES, the Echelle spectrograph at BOAO (Bohyunsan Optical Astronomical Observatory), the wavelength scale drift can be several hundreds m/s over 24 hours. Due to the wavelength scale drift, the RV measurements accuracy of BOES is limited to several hundreds m/s. By estimating the wavelength scale drift by telluric lines, we can remove its effect to improve the RV measurements accuracy to about 40 m/s.

  • We present physical parameters of the detached eclipsing binary KIC3858884, which has a d-Scuti type pulsating secondary component. To derive orbital elements from radial-velocity curve, high-resolution Echelle spectra were obtained at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory in Korea. The BOES spectra and Kepler photometric data were analyzed with JKTEBOP and Wilson-Devinney model for eclipsing light-curve synthesis and Period04 for pulsation frequency analysis. After the iterative curve fitting, we determined physical parameters of KIC3858884 as $M_1=2.02{\pm}0.23M_{\odot}$, $M_2=2.02{\pm}0.16M_{\odot}$, $R_1=3.61{\pm}0.12R_{\odot}$, $R_2=2.84{\pm}0.10R_{\odot}$, respectively.

  • In this article, a four-variable refined plate theory is presented for buckling analysis of functionally graded plates subjected to uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises across the thickness direction. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains, and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factor. Young's modulus and Poisson ratio of the FGM plates are assumed to remain constant throughout the entire plate. However, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the FGM plate varies according to a power law form through the thickness coordinate. Equilibrium and stability equations are derived based on the present theory. The influences of many plate parameters on buckling temperature difference such ratio of thermal expansion, aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio and gradient index will be investigated.

  • A widely tunable multi-channel grating cavity laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The device is implemented in Littman configuration with an echelle grating based on Rowland circle construction and realized by monolithically integrating all elements in an InP substrate. Lasing wavelength is selected by turning on an amplifier and the appropriate channel element in the array, and it is tuned by controlling light deflection electrically. The 6-channel device exhibits a tuning range of about 50 nm with a side mode suppression ratio of more than 30 dB. This is accomplished by adjusting the applied current of the dispersive element and phase control section.
