A Relationship between the Sea Level Variations in the Korea Strait and the Tokara Strait in the Kuroshio region

  • A relationship between sea level variations in the Korea Strait (the western and the eastern channels) and the Tokara Strait in the Kuroshio region is examined using daily-mean sea level data from 1966 to 1986. The seasonal variation of the sea level difference (SLD) between Izuhara and Pusan (the western channel) is most periodic: the positive anomalies appear from summer to autumn, and the negative anomalies from winter to spring year to year, whereas SLDs neither between Hakata and Izuhara (the eastern channel) nor between Naze and Nishinoomote (the Tokara Strait) show such a periodic variation. Much similarity has been found between SLDs in the eastern channel and the Tokara Strait, and in particular they were closely correlated in a special event of the Kuroshio region, such as a large meander of the Kuroshio. This paper shows that the periodic seasonal variation of the SLDs in the western channel should be less related to the Kuroshio region. This result also implies that the variation of SLD in the western channel is largely influenced by local factors, such as the bottom cold water in the western channel in summer, rather than from the Kuroshio region.

대마난류와 관련된 대한해협 해수면의 변동 (Variability of Sea Levels Associated with the Tsushima Current in the Korea Strait)

  • 대한해협을 통해서 흐르는 대마난류의 변동을 연구하기 위하여 부산, 이즈하라, 하카다 해수면의 시계열 자료를 분석하였다. 해수면 및 해수면차의 변동성은 0.01-0.02cpd를 중심으로 두 부분으로 구분된다. 저주파에서 해수면과 해수면차는 상관성이 높으며 위상차는 작다. 부산 해수면의 계절변화 폭은 다른 두 곳보다 작은데 이것은 지형류 효과와 계절풍의 영향이 밀도의 계절변화 효과를 상쇄하기 때문이다. 대마난류의 세기와 관련이 있는 해수면차의 변동은 동수도에 비해 서수도에서 매우 크다. 고주파 부분에 있어서 동수도의 해수면차는 그 변동성이 서수도에 비해 크고 양수도의 해수면차는 서로 상관성이 없다. 부산과 이즈하라의 해수면은 각각 서수도와 동수도에서의 해수면차와 $180^{\circ}$ 위상차가 나는 반면에 하카다에서는 같은 위상을 가진다. 이 결과는 이즈하라가 동수도쪽에 위치함으로써 동수도의 해수면은 바람과 지형류 효과에 대해 정상적인 반응을 한다는 것을 나타낸다.

낙동강 하구역 진우도 남측 해역의 해저지형 변화 (Bathymetric changes off the sea south of Jinwoo-do Island in the Nakdong River estuary)

  • 낙동강 하구를 둘러싸고 있는 울타리 섬들 중 하나인 진우도 남측 해역에서의 해저지형 변동을 2006년 6월부터 2015년 4월까지 총 16회의 수심측정 자료를 이용하여 연구하였다. 이 해역의 동쪽은 진우도와 신자도 사이로 서낙동강과 낙동강 하구둑에서 유입되는 담수의 이동 통로로 해수와 담수의 유입 및 유출 수로가 위치해 있으며, 서쪽은 눌차도와 진우도 사이로 부산신항의 연결잔교를 통하여 해수가 이동하는 수로가 존재한다. 동쪽 수로 연장에서의 변화가 이 해역의 해저지형 변화를 주도한다. 지형 변동은 퇴적 또는 침식만이 일방적으로 진행되는 것이 아니라 퇴적 또는 침식이 진행되다가 어느 일정한 단계가 지나면 급격한 변형을 통하여 회귀하는 형태를 보이고 있다. 특히 연구 지역의 총 퇴적량은 2006년 6월부터 2013년 3월까지 증가하다가 2013년 10월 자료부터 급격히 감소하여 2015년 4월까지 큰 변동없이 유지되고 있는 것을 보여주고 있다는 결론을 얻었다. 이것은 2013년 10월 초에 한반도에 영향을 준 제 24호 태풍 '다나스' (Danas)에 의해 진우도 남측해역의 토사가 외해로 쓸려나간 현상으로 판단된다. 진우도 동쪽에 위치한 수로의 변동은 동서, 남북 방향의 측선을 이용하여 분석하였는데, 수로의 최대수심 위치가 2006년 6월에 비해 2015년 4월까지 서쪽으로 약 100 ~ 130 m, 북쪽으로 약 200 m 이동한 것으로 확인되었다.

Dynamic Channel Allocation Control with thresholds in Wireless Cellular Networks using Simpy

  • New and handoff calls control mechanisms are the key point to wireless cellular networks. In this paper, we present an adaptive algorithm for dynamic channel allocation scheme with guard channels and also with handoff calls waiting queue ensuring that handoff calls take priority over new calls. Our goal is to find better tradeoff between handoffs and new calls blocking probabilities in order to achieve more efficient channel utilization. Simpy is a Python based discrete event simulation system. We use Simpy to build our simulation models to get analytical data.

Do North Korean Social Media Show Signs of Change?: An Examination of a YouTube Channel Using Qualitative Tagging and Social Network Analysis

  • This study examines the interplay between the reactions of YouTube users and North Korean propaganda. Interesting enough, the study has noticed changes in the strict media environment under young leader Kim. Messages delivered by the communist regime to the outside world appeared to resemble those of 'normal' countries. Although North Korean YouTube was led mainly by the account operator, visitors from different nations do comment on the channel, which suggests the possibility of building international communities for propaganda purposes. Overall, the study observed a sparsely connected social network among ordinary commenters. However, the operator did not exercise tight control over peer-to-peer communication but merely answered questions and tried to facilitate mass participation. In contrast to the many news clips, the documentary content on North Korea's YouTube channel did not explicitly advocate for North Korea's current political positions.

한국 동남해역의 해양현상에 관한 연구 (Hydrography and Currents in the Southeastern Sea of Korea, October 1982)

  • Spatial and temporal variations of hydrography and currents are investigated in the Southeastern Sea of Korea during October 1982. The distribution of the water mass of high salinity (>34.40${\textperthousand}$) and low dissolved oxygen concentration (<5.0ml/l) indicates that the Tsushima current flows northward as it passes the Western Channel of the Korea Strait. The cold water (<$6.0^{\circ}c$) with low salinity (<$34.20{\textperthousand}$) and high dissolved oxygen concentration (>6.0ml/l) reaches the bottom of the western channel of the Korea Strait after flowing southward leaning against the slope rather than following the deepest part of the Channel. Repeated sections in the Korea Strait show a remarkable change of hydrographic structure over a period of 4 days ; both warn and cold waters are intensified, particularly in the eastern part of the strait toward the Tsushima Island.

황해 남동해역에서의 열수지에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Heat Budget in the South Eastern Area of the Yellow Sea)

  • 황해동남해역 (33$^{\circ}$N-36$^{\circ}$N, 120$^{\circ}$E)의 해면 열수지를 기상자료와 해양자료 를 이용하여 계산하였다. 현열, 증발열, 장파복사열을 모두 년변화를 하고 겨울철에 는 제주해협을 따라 강한 온도 전선을 나타내지만 여름철에는 동쪽 연안해역을 향해 감소하는 경향을 가진다. 전해역은 교환열량의 년변화 및 분포의 특징에 따라 중앙해역, 연안해역, 남부해역으로 나뉘어진다. 남부해역의 총교환열량의 년변화 진 폭은 중앙해역, 연안해역에 비하여 매우 크다. 대체적으로 조사해역은 증발열과 현열에 의해 가열된다고 볼 수 있다.

광양만과 여수해만의 가스함유 표층퇴적물의 3.5kHz 탄성파 영상 (3.5kHz seismic images of the gas-charged shallow sediment at Kwangyang Bay and the Yeosu Sound on the southern coast of Korea)

  • The 3.5kHz sub-bottom profiling was carried out over both Gwangyang Bay and the Yeo Sound . High -resolution digital images of uppermost sediment layers are obtained from the field data which were originally recorded in analog mode. Most prominent feature along the acoustic profiles is the chaotic reflections which imply the presence of shallow gas within the silty sediments. In the western part of Gwangyang Bay, the gas-charged sediments are assoicated with the acoustic turbidity of the blanket type. Across the Seomjin Delta in the eastern part of Gwangyang Bay, the gas-charged seismic facies are observed just beneath the sea bottom. In the western Yeoul Sound , the gassy seiments occur widely , whereas it is rare in the eastern counterpart with the <30-m-deep channel. We postulate that this gas was biogenetically produced within the organic-rich deposits.

A Basic Study on Marine Traffic Assessment in Mombasa Approach Channel-I

  • Mombasa is the principle port of Kenya, serving inland countries in Eastern and central Africa. Mombasa port has undergone a massive infrastructure upgrade and dredging works with an expectation that more vessels and large post Panamax ships will be able to enter Mombasa port. Therefore, it is vital to carry out a marine traffic risk assessment in order to quantify the degree of navigation safety needed in the Mombasa approach channel and also to evaluate the navigation risk imposed on transit traffic by local ferry traffic. In this paper, a marine traffic risk assessment is carried out using the IWRAP mk2, Environmental Stress (ES) model, and the PARK model. Risk assessment results show that Likoni area has an unacceptable stress/risk ranking at 20.7% by the ES model and 38.89% by the PARK model. The IWRAP mk2 model shows that the crossing area has the highest risk of crossing collision and the area at the entrance to the inner channel has a high risk of grounding. The conclusions derived from this study will provide the basis for proposing the most effective countermeasure to improve navigation safety in the Mombasa approach channel.
