  • The objective of this study is firstly to frame up the seismic safety of concrete gravity dams. It is necessary to analyze seismic response and evaluate seismic performance of concrete gravity dams during earthquake. In this study, seismic damage and dynamic analysis of concrete gravity dams using SAP2000 program are peformed. Additional dynamic water pressure due to earthquake was considered as additional mass for numerical seismic analysis. But, further research will be necessary for the seismic stability of dams.

  • In this paper, the basic concepts and main characteristics in Eurocode 8, which deals with earthquake-resistant design, are reviewed regarding the design of reinforced concrete structures. Eurocode uses the limit-state design method to satisfy the requirements of safety and serviceability. This kind of information can serve to establish the up-coming Korean seismic code which is comprehensive and appropriate to the moderate seismicity region by constituting an important part in the basic data-pool.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose the draft guidelines of seismic isolation design of Liquid Metal Reactor (LMR) using high damping laminated rubber bearings. The scopes of guidelines include design requirements of a seismically isolated system and components, seismic isolator, isolation system, interface system between seismic isolation and non-seismic isolation part, qualification and acceptance tests of seismic isolator, seismic isolation reliability, and seismic safety and monitoring system. Proposed guidelines shall be revised to extend to general design guideline for nuclear facilities by further research and discussions.

  • This paper reports the results of a study designed to understand and facilitate disaster mitigation for communities located in low frequency/high magnitude earthquake zones. The study is based on a small town located near the New Madrid Fault Zone and is therefore at significant earthquake risk. A system dynamics model describes the variables and policies governing the distribution of building safety over time. Data from this town is used to establish a 25-year baseline. Simulations are run to demonstrate the consequences of different building policies.

  • This paper presents the detailed modelling of reactor vessel ledge region for the dynamic analysis of the coupled internals and core model. The dynamic responses due to earthquake and pipe break are calculated using the input motions of reactor vessel taken from Ulchin nuclear power plant units 3 and 4. Two different representations for detailed and simplified models of the RV ledge region are made. The dynamic responses of the reactor internals components are compared between them. Response characteristics are reported and simplified model is suggested for earthquake and pipe break analysis for the future design of the reactor internals.

  • Earthquake disasters that exceed the design criteria can pose significant threats to nuclear facilities. Seismic probabilistic safety assessment(PSA) is a probabilistic way to quantify such risks. Accordingly, seismic PSA has been applied to domestic and overseas nuclear power plants, and the safety of nuclear power plants was evaluated and prepared against earthquake hazards. However, there were few examples where seismic PSA was applied in case of a research reactor with a relatively small size compared to nuclear power plants. Therefore, in this study, seismic PSA technique was applied to actually completed research reactor to analyze its safety. Also, based on these results, the optimization study on the seismic capacity of the system constituting the research reactor was carried out. As a result, the possibility of damage to the core caused by the earthquake hazard was quantified in the research reactor and its safety was confirmed. The optimization study showed that the optimal seismic capacity distribution was obtained to ensure maximum safety at a low cost compared with the current design. These results, in the future, can expect to be used as a quantitative indicator to effectively improve the safety of the research reactor with respect to earthquakes.

  • In this study liquefaction hazard potential was assessed by modified Seed and Idriss method and maps of liquefaction hazard potential utilized by LPI(Liquefaction Potential Index) and FE(Equivalent Liquefaction Factor of Safety) were constructed in two dimensional space, Comparisons of liquefaction hazard maps assessed by LPI and FE are represented to verify the FE method proposed in this study. Based on the results of comparing liquefaction hazard map using LPI and FE there is similar distribution trend of zonation indices. from the result of comparison of liquefaction hazard maps of FE base using Hachinohe and ofunato PGA(Peak ground Acceleration) data at one site of port and harbor in Korea the values of FE in liquefaction hazard map using Hachinohe data are underestimated. And in the view of quantitative analysis FE is more convenient than LPI because types of results from FE are factor of safety that widely used in geotechnical practice and aseismic design standard for port and harbor in Korea.

  • For the vibration control of earthquake-excited buildings, an optimal design method of integrated control system considering soil-structure interaction is studied in this paper. Interaction between soils and the base of the building is simply modeled as lumped parameters and equations of motion are derived. The equations of motion are transformed into the state space equations and the probabilistic excitations such as Kanai-Tajumi power spectral density function is introduced. Then an optimization problem is formulated as finding hybrid or integrated control systems which minimizes the stochastic responses of the building structure for given constraints. In order to investigate the feasibility of the optimization method, an example design and numerical simulations are performed with tenstory building. Finally, numerical results are compared with a conventional design case that soil-structure interaction is not considered.

  • In this study, seismic performance of various types of valve supports in terms of flexural rigidity are evaluated by FEA using equivalent static load method. Flexural rigidity of the existing two types of valve supports can be effectively improved by simply adding one more bracket on the other side of support. New types of polygonal valve supports with a concept of fully stressed beam theory are suggested and it is verified that the new supports are rigid enough to withstand stronger earthquake which we should be prepared for.
