  • The safety of cultural properties, medical treatment and electrical communication equipments in a building was hardly considered against the earthquake induced vibration, while the integrity of the building structure has been taken into account through the resistant earthquake design. This paper presents design of a seismic isolation table for both indoor and outdoor electrical communication equipment. First of all, artificial earthquake waves compatible with floor and ground response spectra for electrical communication equipments are generated using previously recorded seismic waves. Two kinds of one-degree-of-freedom seismic isolation table systems: spring-linear damper and spring-friction damper systems are considered and their responses to artificial earthquake waves are simulated. Design parameter study for two seismic isolation tables are performed through simulations and a seismic isolation table for both indoor and outdoor electrical communication equipment is designed considering the simulation results.

  • The present Study dealt with the earthquake-resistant design of cantilever retaining walls supporting cohesionless soils. With design examples of three different types of cantilever retaining walls, the factors of safety against sliding were computed at various values of horizontal acceleration coefficient and compared with each other. The horizontal inertia effect due to the weights of concrete wall itself and a portion of backfill was taken into account in the analyses, and also Mononobe-Okabe pseudo-static solution method was modified to deal with various states different from limiting equilibrium state. From the analyses of safety against sliding, it was found that a cantilever retaining wall with sloped base was the most efficient type in earthquake resistant design. It was also found that by sloping the base, the width of the base slab could be reduced, resulting in the least volume of concrete, excavation and backfill as compared to the other types of walls. In the case of a cantilever retaining wall with sloped feel, the efficiency similar to that of a wall with sloped base could be expected under static loading as well as at relatively low level of earthquake loading. However, this efficiency became vanished with the increase of horizontal acceleration coefficient, since the rate of reduction in developed earth pressures on the heel became smaller. In addition, the design charts with different soil friction angles as well as with different earthquake resistant design criteria of safety factor against sliding were presented for the design of cantilever retaining walls sith sloped base.

  • Because of its large contribution to the environmental instability of the planet, the building industry will soon be subjected to a worldwide scrutiny. As a consequence, all professionals involved in the building industry will need to create a professional media in which their daily work adequately solves the technical issues involved in the conception, design and construction of concrete and steel buildings, and simultaneously convey care for the environment. This paper discusses, from the point of view of a structural engineer involved in earthquake-resistant design, some of the measures that can be taken to promote the consolidation of a building industry that is capable of actively contributing to the sustainable development of the world.

  • there is no earthquake resistant design code for the unreinforced masonary(URM) buildings in Korea. But it does not mean that all URM buldings in Korea is safe under the possible extent of an earthquake. The purpose of this study is in the inelastic analysis of unreinforced masonary walls with many different types of openings and carry out their ductilities an strengths, response modification factor of each wall has been compared and the most appropriate response modification factor for URM building in Korea has been proposed.

  • In this paper, the basic concepts and main characteristics in Eurocode 8, which deals with earthquake-resistant design, are reviewed regarding the design of reinforced concrete structures. Eurocode uses the limit-state design method to satisfy the requirements of safety and serviceability. This kind of information can serve to establish the up-coming Korean seismic code which is comprehensive and appropriate to the moderate seismicity region by constituting an important part in the basic data-pool.

  • In most seismic codes such as the Uniform Building Code(UBC), the response modification factor(or the force reduction factor)is used to reflect the capability of a structure in dissipating energy through inelastic behavior. The response modification factor is assigned according to structural system type. Ductile systems such as special moment-resisting steel frames are assigned larger values of the response modification factor, and are consequently designed for smaller seismic design forces. Therefore, structural damage may occur during a severe earthquake. To ensure safety of the structures, the suitability of the response modification factor used in aseismic design procedures shall be evaluated. The object of this study is to develop a method for the evaluating of the response modification factor. The validity of the evaluating method has been examined for several cases of different structures and different earthquake excitations.
