Civil structures are becoming more flexible and lightly damped. When subjected to dynamic loads such as wind, earthquake and wave, vibration may be easily induced and lasted for lond duration. To suppress the wind-induced and earthquake-induced vibration of high-rise buildings, study on the development of a tuned mass damper has been carried out. Based on optimal design on passive tuned mass damper which is considered for a building subject to random excitations, a biaxial tuned mass damper was designed and developed. It is confirmed that the vibration levels of the test structure are reduced using the developed tuned mass damper.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the shear wall location in rigid frames on the dynamic behavior of a roof structure due to vertical and horizontal earthquake motions. The study deals with a gabled long span beam supported by two story rigid frames with shear walls. The earthquake response analysis is carried out to study the responses of the roof: vibration mode, natural period, bending moment and horizontal shear force of the bearings. The study results in the following conclusions: First, a large horizontal stiffness difference between the side frames is caused by the shear wall location, which results in a large vertical vibration of the roof and a large shear force at the side bearings. Second, in this case, the seismic design method for ordinary buildings is not useful in determining the distribution of the static equivalent loads for the seismic design of this kind of long span structures.
This paper develops a probabilistic methodology for the seismic reliability analysis of structures with random properties. The earthquake loading is assumed to be described in terms of response spectra. The proposed methodology takes advantage of the response spectra and thus does not require explicit dynamic analysis of the actual structure. Uncertainties in the structural properties (e.g. member cross-sections, modulus of elasticity, member strengths, mass and damping) as well as in the seismic load (due to uncertainty associated with the earthquake load specification) are considered. The structural reliability is estimated by determining the failure probability or the reliability index associated with a performance function that defines safe and unsafe domains. The structural failure is estimated using a performance function that evaluates whether the maximum displacement has been exceeded. Numerical illustrations of reliability analysis of elastic and elastic-plastic single-story frame structures are presented first. The extension of the proposed method to elastic multi-degree-of-freedom uncertain structures is also studied and a solved example is provided.
Structures subjected to strong seismic excitation may undergo inelastic deformation cycles. The resulting cumulative fatigue damage process reduces the ability of structures and components to withstand seismic loads. Yet, the present earthquake resistance design methods focus mainly on the maximum displacement ductility, ignoring the effect of the cyclic responses. The damage parameters closely related to the cumulative damage need to be properly reflected on the aseismic design methods. In this study, two cumulative damage assessment methods derived from the plastic fatigue theory are investigated. The one is based on the hysteretic ductility amplitude, and the other is based on the dissipated hysteretic energy. Both methods can consider the maximum ductility and the cyclic behavior of structural response. The validity of two damage methods has been examined for single degree of freedom structures with various natural frequencies against two different earthquake excitations.
A general approach to the dynamic time-history analysis of the reactor core is presented in this paper as a part of the fuel assembly qualification program. Several detailed core models are set up to reflect the placement of the fuel assemblies within the core shroud. Peak horizontal responses are obtained for each model for the motions induced form earthquake. The dynamic responses such as fuel assembly deflected shapes and spacer grid impact loads are carefully investigated. Also, the sensitivity responses are obtained for the earthquake motions and the fuel assembly non-linear response characteristics are discussed.

In this paper we investigated an applicability of earthquake regulations for seismic-isolated building structures which has been used currently and propose an efficient method for vertical distribution of seismic loads. The distribution of force is revised in UBC-94 as vertical distribution of force of UBC(Uniform Building Code)-91 is not sufficient safety but its distribution is inefficient expensive because of similar expression to fixed-based structures. In order to overcome this difficulties improved vertical distribution to fixed-based structures. In order to overcome this difficulties improved vertical distribution of seismic load is proposed using two degrees-of-freedom isolated structures and mode shape of fixed-based structures. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through analysis of an example structures with moment resisting frame and shear walls so this study approximate to dynamic analysis results in each case.
As the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes increase in Korea, interest in earthquake damage reduction technology has increased. Therefore, research on vibration damping devices that directly respond to seismic loads is being actively researched. After an earthquake, damage or destruction of the device occurs due to the yield of materials, and thus it takes considerable cost and time for restoration and replacement. To supplement the problems of the existing earthquake damage reduction technology, a study was conducted on the recentering smart damper that can be used continuously after an earthquake. In this study, the recentering smart damper that can be restored to its original shape after load removal was developed using superelastic shape memory alloy, pre-compressed polyurethane. General steel was commonly applied to verify the seismic performance of the superelastic shape memory alloy, and the performance of the smart damper was verified according to the amount of polyurethane pre-compressed

The responses of a 1:5 scale 3-story masonry-infilled RC frame which was designed only for gravity loads were simulated by using a nonlinear analysis program, DRAIN-2DX The objective of this study is to verify the correlation between the experimental and analytical responses of masonry-infilled RC frame. It is concluded from this comparison that the strength and stillness of the whole structure can be predicted with quite high reliability using compressive strut (compression link element, Type 09) while some local behavior cannot be described reasonably.

The main concern of numerical dynamic analysis of large structures is to find an acceptable solution with fewer mode shapes and less computational efforts. component mode method utilizes substructure technique to reduce the degrss of freedom but have a disadvantage to not consider the dynamic characteristics of loads. Ritz Vector method consider the load characteristics but requires many integrations and errors are accumulated. In this study, to prove the effectiveness of component mode method, Lanczos algorithm are introduced. To prove the effectiveness of this method, example structures areanalyzed and the results are compared with SAP90.

URM buildings have been damaged seriously during earthquake since they were not designed to resist lateral loads. It has led to the importance of studying the behavior and capacity for URM building. The objective of this study is to evaluate seismic performance of URM (Unreinforced Masonry) building. For this purpose, this paper discuss the response of 2 story reduced-scale building subjected to earthquake motion and compare them using existing guidelines to provide improved knowledge for URM building.
