  • Lower Ordovician (Upper Tremadoc) graptolites were found for the first time at the two sections of the Mungok Formation in Danyang area: the Seokgyori and Daejeonri sections. The graptolites from these sections comprise two species of two genera: Adelograptus brevibrachiatus and Psigraptus jacksoni. The graptolite faunas of the sections in the area show simple composition relative to Yeongwol area; they appear to be correlated to: (1) the Adelograptus cf tenellus Zone of Yeongwol area, (2) the Adelograptus cf. tenellus Zone of Yukon, Canada, (3) the Psigraptus Zone of Tasmania, Australia, and (4) the Psigraptus jacksoni Zone of Jilin, China. The age of graptolite beds of the Mungok Formation at Danyang appears to be early Upper Tremadoc of the Lower Ordovician.

  • Adelograptus brevibrachiatus sp. novo is erected for materials previously referred to as Adelograptus cf. tenellus from the circum-Pacific area. The species shares many morphological characteristics with Adelograptus tenellus from Europe but differs from it by possessing typically short stipe lengths throughout rhabdosome due to less thecal density along the stipes. Taxonomic characteristics of A. cf. tenellus reported from circum-Pacific area are compared with each other. The paleogeographic distribution of A. tenellus seems to be restricted within Europe, while that of A. brevibrachiatus within circum-Pacific area.

  • Five species of graptolites were discovered from the Jigunsan Shale of Taebaeg area, Korea. They are herein described as Archiclimacograptus riddellensis (Harris, 1924), Pseudamplexograptus distichus(Eichwald, 1840), Hustedograptus teretiusculus(Hisinger) sensu Jaanusson, 1960, Hustedograptus vikarbyensis (Jaanusson, 1960), and Hustedograptus sp. The graptolite assemblage from the Jigunsan Shale corresponds to those of the Pseudamplexograptus distichus zone in the Baltic and German areas and the geologic age of graptolites bearing beds of the Jigunsan Shale might be late Middle Llanvirn.

  • The purpose of the study is to compare and analyze the elementary science textbooks' contents between the United States(Science Horizons) and Korea for teaching the Returnee students. The analyzed contents are the name of chapters, the number of chapters, the page amounts of chapters, the structure of chapters and the studying time of chapters. The results of this study are : 1. Korean science textbook's number is 20. 'Science Horizons' has 6. Korean science textbook's total number of chapter is 58, 'Science Horizons' is 75. Korean science textbook's total number of page is 1,60.3, 'Science Horizons' is 2,106. So 'Science Horizons' has more number of chapter and page than Korean textbooks. 2. The ratio of Korean science textbook's contents is as follows: physical area, 22.4%; chemistry area, 12 1%: biology area, 39.6%; earth science area, 25.9%. But the ratio of 'Science Horizons' science textbook's contents is as follows: physical area,21.3%; chemistry area,4.0%; biology area, 46.7%; earth science area. 28.0%. 3. In case of 'Predicting the Weather' chapter, Korean science textbook has 3 lessons, 17 themes and 11 activities, whereas' Science Horizons' has 5 lessons, 10 themes and 5 activities. 4. The themes or chapters of 'Science Horizons' to propose deeper than Korea are about animals and plants, energy and movement, weather and season. our body, and earth and outer space. In case of Korean textbook are about chemistry area, the rock and volcanic activity and electric circuit. There are some differences between Korean and the United States' elementary science curriculum and textbook's contents. And the returnee students has many troubles to adapt korean science curriculum, textbooks and educational environment,;. Therefore, teachers should know and understand that, and help them.

  • An earthquake of $M_L$ 5.8 hit the Gyeongju area on September 12, 2016. A sequence of foreshock-mainshock-aftershock of 588 events with equal to or greater than magnitude 1.5 occurred for six months in this area. Around ninety-nine percentage (98.8%) of the total energy was released intensively within a day, and about 80% of the total events took place within a month after the Gyeongju earthquake. The epicentral distribution of aftershocks of major events ($M_L$ 5.1, 5.8, 4.5, and 3.5) were elongated in the direction of $N30^{\circ}E$. They correlate well with the focal mechanism solution. These facts support the inference that the Gyeongju earthquakes occurred on a sub-parallel subsidiary fault of the Yangsan fault zone or on the linking damage zones between Deokcheon and Yangsan fault. During the last six years before the Gyeongju earthquake, there were few events within 10-km radius from the epicenter. This seismic gap area was filled with a sequence of the Gyeongju earthquakes. The b value for aftershock of the Gyeongju earthquakes is 1.09.

  • The United States curriculum reform movement has recently started in each area of science education. The initiatives on curriculum reform stem from a notion that the low rate of science curricula offered in schools has been a serious problem. The schools in the United States are not only facing a lack of offerings within science curricula but also low enrollment in science courses, especially in physics, chemistry, and earth science. This trend resulted in low performances on international achievement tests including TIMSS and PISA. This paper introduces the efforts to solve existing problems through curriculum reform; including ChemCom, BioCom, EarthComm, and Active Physics. In this paper, a discussion is presented to show how the curricula can help address the status quo in science education. More specifically, this paper focuses on curriculum reform in high school earth science (EarthComm), providing a closer look at the scope and sequence of the reform movement. EarthComm was chosen because it was released based on the development of the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996). Consequently, EarthComm became a curriculum that espoused the visions of the Standards, which has been guiding the reform of the US curriculum. At the end of this paper, two research outcomes of the EarthComm curriculum implementation in schools are discussed in terms of student learning and differences from conventional curricula.

  • This study is aimed at analyzing earth conception the nine pre service teachers who are majoring in earth science education and classifying a special feature from the ontological categories. Open ended questionnaires and semi structured interviews which meant to contribute to identifying ontological categories of concepts involving study area were designed. Pre service teachers' ontological category about earth conception most showed to dynamic and proto process. In the results show that many pre service teachers recognize simply the conception to a material, a condition and a conversion of the state changing. Most of the pre service teachers show their intermediate understanding level about the earth inner construction according to the analyzed results of the drawing tasks and interviews. The main alternative conceptions show them through a definition of the plate, a wording definition between lithosphere and asthenosphere, a feature of the plate boundary, a heat convection in the earth inner, the earth inner heat source, the earth inner structure, a physical feature of the mantle.
