This study was conducted to define the effects of color of polyethylene (P.E.) net shading on the meteorological conditions under the shading growth status, photosynthesis and saponin contents of ginseng plant. Red and blue polyethylene net shading (4 fold) showed a good light intensity of ginseng growth, but red one not only increased air temperature but also resulted in early defoliation. Photosynthetic rate of ginseng leaves was increased in order of red, blue and black shade, Root yield and saponin contents were significantly increased red and blue net as compared with those of common straw shading. Blue color appeared to be most recommendable.

This study investigated the influence of seasonal incidence and defoliation degree caused by Marssonina blotch (Diplocarpon mali Harada et Sawamura) on shoot growth and fruit quality of 'Fuji'/M.9 apple tree. The occurrence of marssonina blotch in Gunwi region was observed from the mid of July 2009, and percentage of defoliation was about 10% in the end of October. In 2010, that started in the early of June. By the end of September, percentage of defoliation was 20% and it reached 50% in late October. Secondary growth of terminal shoot in 2010 was three times as much as that in 2009. In 2009, the soluble solid contents and the red color (hunter a value) during fruit maturation increased to $13.8^{\circ}Brix$ and 16.2, respectively. In 2010, the soluble solid content during fruit maturation remained in the $12.1-12.6^{\circ}Brix$ range after early October, and the red color began to increase after the end of September when the percentage of defoliation was 20%. As for fruit quality by defoliation degree, the red color decreased when defoliation percentage of bourse shoot at the end of October was more than 30%. Fruit weight and soluble solids also decreased when defoliation percentage was more than 50%. Fruit length and diameter of over 30% defoliation treatments begun to decrease after the middle of August, compared with those of under 30% defoliation treatment. Photosynthetic rate of the leaves that was located at the secondary growth of bourse shoot was similar to that of leaves which was located at the middle of bourse shoot. However, the size and the soluble solid content of fruit were not affected by photosynthesis activities of bourse shoot leaves which was develop in the secondary shoot growth.
This study was conducted to examine the effects of defoliation levels during winter season on the yield and soluble solid contents of fruits. To achieve this strawberry 'Seolhyang' cultivated forcingly in the year of 2013 to 2014 as well as 2014 to 2015. The three treatments include periodical removing of leaves remaining 6 fully expanded leaves, those remaining 9 leaves, and only removing of old and infected leaves during the period from early December to end of February. In the early marketable fruit yield until the end of February and total marketable fruit yield, the treatment of non-defoliation was significantly higher than those of the treatment of 6 and 9 leaves in the year of 2014 to 2015 cropping season. Soluble solid contents of fruits among January and March increased significantly as the number of leaves get higher. Soluble solid contents were higher and stable around $12^{\circ}Brix$ in the treatment of non-defoliation. Assimilation of photosynthetic products into plant tissue are insufficient due to the lack of irradiation and short day in winter season forcing cultivation of strawberry. Thus, it is considered to manage the leaves with defoliation for only old and infected leaves from December to February for increasing of fruit yield and improvement of fruit quality.
This experiment was conducted to estimate the effect of defoliation on the weight of 1,000 kernels, the rate of ripened grains and the weight of an ear of Yusin and Mylang No. 15 after heading. The resnlts obtained were as follows : 1. The weight of 1,000 kenels, the rate of ripend grains and the weight of an ear were significantly decreased by various defoliation. But there was not found significant difference in 1,000 kernel weight of Mylang No. 15 between each treatment of defoliation. 2. When lower leaves were remained, the weight of 1,000 kernels, the rate of ripened grains and the weight of an ear were more influence than when higher leaves were remained. And the same results were obtained when two leaves were remained at the different leaf position. In order words, when leaf remained was combined with leaf positioned at upper area, the weight of 1,000 kernels, the rate of ripened grains and the weight of an ear were higher than when the leaf was combined with lower leaves. 3. Even though Yusin was early heading variety and subjected to defoliation later than Mylang No. 15 in terms of total physiological maturity the response to defoliation was higher than that of Mylang No. 15 in the rate of ripened grains and ear weight. The exception was found for the 1,000 kernel weight. The result obtained indicated that leaves of Yusin influence more the weight of 1,000 kernels, the rate of ripened grains and the weight of an ear to the later stage than that of Mylang No. 15.

This study was conducted to find out influence of dormancy level and carbon concentration on freezing hardiness in bourse shoot of 'Fuji' apple tree. Bourse shoot of 'Fuji' adult apple tree grafted on M.26 and M.9 rootstocks were used as experimental materials. Dormancy levels of bourse shoot were categorized according to the periods as follows the internal dormancy (late January), the early days after internal dormancy breaking (early February), the late days after internal dormancy breaking (late February), the bud break (late March), and the full bloom (late April). Chilling temperatures with bourse shoot were ranged from 0 to $-40^{\circ}C$. Also, the freezing hardiness according to carbon concentrations were investigated on 'Fuji'/M.9 apple tree that defoliated severely by Marssonina blotch (defoliation) and that of below the average 20 cm in shoot length through heavy crop load (weakness). Results showed that freezing hardiness of bourse shoot may become weaker after internal dormancy breaking. There was no differences in the carbon concentration of bourse shoot of 'Fuji' apple tree grafted on M.9 and M.26, so may be resulted in no difference in freezing hardiness both of bourse shoot grafted on M.9 and M.26 rootstock. Carbon concentration in bourse shoots with weakness and C/N ratio in bourse shoots with defoliation were lower than that of healthy. It may be shown that the freezing hardiness of defoliation and weakness were weaker than that of healthy.
'Sinano Sweet' apple trees were defoliated at intervals of a month from May to October to simulate damage occured by hail and typhoon in Korea, accordingly fruit yield, reserve accumulations and return bloom were investigated. As the more severe defoliation degree was and earlier defoliation time was, fruit weight and fruit yields were more decreased. Fruit weight and yields of 30% defoliated trees, regardless of the defoliation time, showed no significant difference with those of control. Because carbohydrate contents of the 2-year old branches defoliated before August were even lower than those of branches defoliated after September, it was considered that defoliation time is more effective on the carbohydrate content than defoliation degree. Among the trees defoliated before August, 50% defoliated trees at August contained the lowest carbohydrate by 50% of control. Time and degree of defoliation had an effect on the number of flower buds following year. The number of return bloom in trees defoliated from May to July was decreased by delay of defoliation time and was the lowest in trees defoliated at July. On the other hand, it was not have a significant different between control and trees defoliated since August. Relationship between the number of return bloom and carbohydrate reserves showed positive correlation. As a result, it is considered that fruit thinning, when defoliation occurred in the growing season, needs for strengthening the sink function of remained individual fruit effect on fruit enlargement and for increaseing the carbohydrate reserve effect on return bloom.

This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of seeding date and fall harvest method on the growth characteristics, forage yield and quality of winter rye(Seca1e cereale L.) at the forage experimental field, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, SNU, Suweon from 5 September 1992 to 21 May 1993. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. Main plots consisted of three harvests, no defoliation, cutting and grazing. Sub-plots consisted of seeding dates, early(5 September), mid(25 September) and late(l0 October). The results obtained are summari7d as follows; I . A 3-day difference in the first heading of rye was observed between no defoliation and fall grazing, while there was a 6day difference between early and late seeding dates. Therefore, the effect of seeding dates on the fist heading date of rye was larger than that of fall harvest methods. 2. CP content of rye with fall grazing was slightly higher averaged 16.5% compared with both fall cutting and no defoliated 1ye(15.6%). Mean CP content of rye at the early, mid and late seeding dates was 14.2, 14.5 and 19.1 %, respectively. 3. ADF content of rye was slightly higher with both fall cutting(29.99) and no defoliation(29.5%) than that of fall grazing(28.0%). ADF content of rye at the early, mid and late seeding dates was 30.7, 29.1 and 27.7%, respectively. Effect of fall harvest methods and seeding dates on NDF content of rye were similar to the observations made on ADF. 4. RFV and IVDMD of rye were lower with both no defoliation and fall cutting than fall grazing. but those of rye slightly increased with seeding dates progressed. 5. Dry matter yield of rye was the highest of 6,779 kg/ha with fall cutting, while the lowest yield of 6,240 kg/ha was obtained from no defoliation But no significant difference was found among the harvest methods. Dry matter yield of rye was significantly declined with later seedings. It is concluded that the highest forage yield of rye be possible from two harvest systems of fall and spring with earlier seeding rather than from one harvest system of spring.
We have studied the responce of nitrogen on the newly bred varieties, Yusin and Milyang #23, and the effects of defoliation at maturing stage on the rate of ripened grains under different nitrogen levels. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Milyang #23 as well as Tongil was found to be highly nitrogen responsive variety and showed good grain maturing percentage. The number of grain per unit area affected the total yield under the high levels of nitrogen application. The variety, Yusin, was less responsive to nitrogen and had also less leaf area than other varieties under the high level of nitrogen application. Yusin also seemed to have low maturing percentage due to unbalanced ratio between photosynthetic area and size of storage. 2. The low internodes and leaf blade of Yusin and Milyang #15 were grown too much under high levels of nitrogen and these caused more lodging and less light penetration in pant canopy. 3. The effects of defoliation at maturing stage on yield was high under the high levels of nitrogen application, especially when defoliation was done early stage of maturing. The effects of defoliation appeared to be greates in Tongil than in Milyang #15.
Apple blotch, caused by Marssonina coronaria, induce early defoliation in apple and leading to critical economic losses in apple orchards in Korea. Since M. coronaria is difficult to culture, we developed isolation and cultural method. We collected M. coronaria isolates from Gyeongbuk Province and then constructed phylogentic tree based on ITS regions. As the results, phylogenetic relationship indicated that all Korean isolates formed a same cluster and closely related to Chinese isolates [1]. Ecological characteristic of M. coronaria have been observed in apple orchards which located in Gyeongbuk Province from 2011 to present. As the results, the typical apple blotch symptoms were observed from July, and then the infected leaves were discolored and formed acervuli on the leaves. After rainfall, severe infection of symptoms such as discoloration and early defoliation were continuously observed until October. Also overwintered conidia were observed in next March on the fallen diseased leaves [2]. In the last 5 years, ascopores of M. coronaria were not observed in apple orchards which were severely infected by M. coronaria in Korea. Thus, it is assumed that overwintered conidia could be a primary inoculum of M. coronaria. Meanwhile, apple blotch has long latent periods compare to other apple disease. During the latent period, early diagnosis of apple blotch is the most important to control the disease by spray fungicide. In this reason, we developed novel diagnostic method to detect M. coronaria during latent period using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method [2, 3]. In this presentation, it will introduce ecological characterization of M. coronaria in Korea and unique detection technique of M. coronaria in apple. It will be helpful to develop new strategies to control apple blotch in Korea.
