The critical element for sustainable growth in the construction industry is the development of alternative cements. A new technological process called geopolymerization provides an innovative solution, and the presence of aluminum and silicon oxides in fly ash has encouraged its use as a source material. Many previous investigations have involved curing the binder in a heated environment. To reduce energy consumption during the synthesis of geopolymers, the present study investigated the properties of ambient cured geopolymer mortar at early ages. An experimental program was executed to establish a relationship between the activator composition and the properties of geopolymer mortar in fresh and hardened states. Concentrations of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate were ascertained that are advantageous for constructability and mechanical behavior. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques were also used to characterize the material. Test results indicate that there is potential for the concrete industry to use fly ash based geopolymer as an alternative to portland cement.
Malaysia, as a tropical rainforest country, enjoys an abundance of bamboo plant that proliferate throughout the country. The application of geopolymer technology has become a trend and preserve the environment from harm. Fly ash geopolymer concrete has low early strength and requires 24 hours for the concrete to harden. Thus, the presence of calcium and potassium content in bamboo ash could remedy this problem. Besides, there is no research regarding the use of bamboo ash as a binder in geopolymer concrete. Therefore, the presence of bamboo ash could improve the research field with the use of agriculture waste in a building construction. This research aim is to use bamboo ash in the production of fly ash geopolymer concrete. The specimens were casted in $100mm{\times}100mm{\times}100mm$ cubes and sodium based activator were used as the alkaline solutions. The binders are formulated with different binder ratio. All test specimens were cured at ambient temperature ($23^{\circ}C-25^{\circ}C$) and 100% fly ash was chosen as control specimen. To determine the mechanical properties of fly sh geopolymer concrete with the presence of bamboo ash, compressive strength test was conducted. The test results depicted that as the percentage of bamboo ash decreases, compressive strength increases. Also, the addition of 5% of bamboo ash into fly ash geopolymer concrete could improve the early strength in 7 days. The results were proven with the result explained by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Therefore, it can be concluded that the addition of bamboo ash improved the properties of fly ash geopolymer concrete at early ages.
The temperature and stress behaviour of mass concrete pier at early ages was analysed based on the finite element method. The pier investigated is a three-dimensional structure of which the cross-sectional shape varies from a circle to an ellipsoid along the longitudinal axis. In order to obtain the transient temperature and stress distributions in the structure, a three dimensional method was adopted, because the structure of this type cannot be modeled accurately by a two-dimensional method. Temperature analysis was performed by taking into consideration of the cement type and content, boundary and environment conditions including the variations of atmospheric temperature and wind velocity. The results of this study may be useful for the temperature control to restrain thermal cracking and the construction management to design the resonable curing method of mass concrete structure.
The change of creep deformation mechanism due to the persistent change of stress conditions requires the constitutive relation for the analysis of long tenn behaviors considering age dependent material properties of concrete. In the present research, the process of time dependent behaviors in structure is divided into two stages; the non-mechanical deforming level which causes creep and shrinkage deformations, and the mechanical deforming level which causes mechanical deformations by the restraints of non-mechanical deformations due to internal or external factors. The incremental constitutive relation is derived by expanding the total stress-strain relation on the present time, with respect to the reference time using the Taylor series, and the modulus of elasticity in early ages of concrete was defined thru this process.
When fresh concrete is exposed to low temperature, the concrete may suffer frost damage due to freezing at early ages and strength development may be delayed. One of the solution methods for resolving these problems is to reduce freezing temperature of concrete by the use of chemical admixture called Accelerators for freezing resistance. In this study, we investigate the effect on strength development of cement mortar using accelerators for freezing resistance with the variance curing condition. As the result of this study, the mortar using accelerators for freezing resistance show that continuously strength development in curing condition of -5$^{\circ}C$. And compressive strength under the variance temperature condition was higher than fixed temperature condition in same maturity.
A low water/cement ratio leads to autogenous shrinkage of cement paste at an early age. This autogenous shrinkage is related to the change of relative humidity in the pore structure that is formed during the hydration process. The relationship between autogenous shrinkage and relative humidity change are relatively well defined today, but the effects of temperature on autogenous shrinkage, relative humidity, and pore structures have been studied less systematically. This study focused on correlating alterations of these properties of cement paste hydrated at constant temperatures of 20, 40, and $60^{\circ}C$. The test results clearly indicate that increasing curing temperature resulted in increased porosity, particularly for pores between 5 to 50 nm as measured by MIP, and increased autogenous shrinkages, as a consequence of a reduction of relative humidity at early ages.
The major object of this study is to investigate experimentally the experimental equation by the non-destructive testing methods of ultrasonic pulse velocity, rebound number, combined method of ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound number, maturity which are applicable to the evaluation of compressive strength of concrete at early ages. Also test result of mix are statistically analyzed to infer the correlation coefficient between the maturity and the compressive strength of concrete. The results show good application of Logistic curve for estimating strength development under various curing temperature. The relation between ultrasonic pulse velocity, rebound number, combined method of ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound number and compressive strength of concrete have low correlation coefficient, but maturity method show good correlation coefficient.
Nonlinear temperature distribution induced by the hydration heat generates thermal stress in mass concrete. At early ages, such thermal stress may induce thermal cracks in the structure which can affect on the durability and safety of the structure. Up to now, a lot of works have focused on the prediction of temperature distribution and thermal stress in the structure. In most of such works, however, the inside of structure was considered as adiabatic state to predict temperature distribution and the thermal stress. And due to the lacks of appropriate analysis models after crack, there was little research on the crack occurrence. This paper deals with the prediction of the temperature distribution in the structure using the rate of hydration heat generation and also estimates the behavior of structure before and after cracking due to hydration heat using crack band model.
