A Quest of Design Principles of Cognitive Artifacts through Case Analysis in e-Learning: A Learner-Centered Perspective

  • Learners are often posited in a paradoxical situation where they are not fully involved in decision making processes on how to learn, in designing their tools. Cognitive artifacts in e-learning are supposed to effectively support learner-centered e-learning. The purpose of the study is to analyze cases of cognitive artifacts and to inquire those design principles for facilitating the learner-centered e-learning. Four research questions are suggested: First, it will be analyzed the characteristics of learners with respect to design of cognitive artifacts for supporting the learner-centered e-learning. Second, characteristics of four cases to design cognitive artifacts in learner-centered e-learning environment are analyzed. Third, it will be suggested the appropriate design principles of cognitive artifacts to facilitating learner-centered learning in e-learning environment. Four cases of cognitive artifacts design in learner-centered e-learning was identified as follows: Wiki software as cognitive artifacts in computer-supported collaborative learning; 'Play Around Network (PAN)' as cognitive artifact to monitor learning activities in knowledge community; Knowledge Forum System (KFS) as a cognitive artifact in knowledge building; cognitive artifacts in Courses-as-seeds applied meta-design. Five design principles are concluded as follows: Promoting externalization of cognitive artifacts to private media; Helping learners to initiate their learning processes; Encouraging learners to make connections with other learners' knowledge building and their cognitive artifacts; Promoting monitoring of participants' contributions in collaborative knowledge building; Supporting learners to design their cognitive artifacts.

The Effects of Sign Language Video Location in e-Learning System for the Hearing-impaired

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of sign language video location in e-learning system for the hearing-impaired. Background: E-learning education is a good way to resolve the inequality of education for the disabled. Providing a sign language video in e-learning education for the hearing-impaired is very important for their learning. Although the location of sign language video is an important factor in the design of the video, the effect of its location in learning using the e-learning system was not studied. Method: In order to identify the effect of sign language video location on the learning of the hearing-impaired using the e-learning system, the prototypes of the system with different locations were developed. Eighteen people with hearing impairment participated in this experiment. Learning presence, learning immersion, and learning satisfaction were used to measure learning effects with sign language video location. Results: Bottom right position was more preferred through preference evaluation for sign language video location. The learning effect with sign language video location (bottom-left and bottom-right) was not significant. That is, the effects of learning presence, immersion, and satisfaction were not statistically significant with video location. Conclusion: From this study, the following have to be considered in e-learning system design for the hearing-impaired. Although the location of a sign language video is not a significant factor from the experiment, the bottom right position in the design is proposed because learning presence and satisfaction is slightly higher at the bottom right position, and the position is preferred from subjective evaluation. From the analysis of interview data, it was also proposed that the design of a sign language video should be improved for the hearing-impaired. Application: The result of this study can be applied to the e-learning system design for the hearing-impaired.

Consensus of Corporate e-Learning System Stakeholders Regarding the Satisfaction of End-Users (기업 이러닝시스템 성과에 대한 이해관계자 인식 부합 관점의 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to call attention to the consensus of stakeholders of corporate e-Learning system for the sake of its success. We identified the critical success factors(contents, technical features, management, and organizational support) as major components of corporate e-Learning systems and questioned whether stakeholders' consensus on the importance of these components facilitates the successful implementation of these components. We also questioned whether the influence of these components on user satisfaction could be moderated by contextual factors. Based on empirical testing of 18 e-Learning user companies, we verified that the consensus of stakeholders regarding the importance of content, technological features, and organizational support has a positive influence on the perceived quality of these factors in their e-Learning systems, which in turn is positively related to user satisfaction. The learning subjects and learning style did significantly moderate the influences of these perceived qualities on user satisfaction.

E-Learning Impact on the Convention Business Settings Focusing on the Employees' Attitude and Emotion (컨벤션 실무자 태도와 감정이 e-learning 교육성과에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, we studied on the e-learning impact on the employees in the convention business, focusing on the employees' learning attitudes and emotion. Since the convention business is getting more attention especially in the culture and tourism industry, the employees in this convention setting are needed to reeducated periodically. We collect and test 126 employees who have studied some conventional education in e-learning. The findings of this research are that an employees' attitude and emotion have a significant positive effect on the achievement or success of the e-learning program. Based on this study, we discuss and suggests managerial implications for building e-learning context, with the consideration of the attitudes and emotion of the participants.

  • The e-Learning is one of best ways to generate the substitution effect for classroom learning, and robust and rational distribution structure for e-Learning industry is the key issue for successful educational performance of e-Learning, however the recent e-Learning market has a distribution status quite different from rational structure. This paper focuses on issues of e-Learning distribution status and alternatives for policy making. In order to make this study successful, we discuss about concepts and scopes of e-Learning distribution and various types of distribution structure by business models. We conducted an interview survey for business individual experts for distribution modelling. Based on the result of the survey, this paper describes issues of distribution structure and suggests alternatives for policy making in the Korea e-Learning market.

The Educational Implementation of e-Learning System Applying the Theory of Motivation - With Focus on "Interest" and the "Self-Determination Theory" (동기 이론이 적용된 e-Learning system의 교육적 실천: 흥미와 SDT를 중심으로)

  • This study examines and measures the enhancement of intrinsic motivation in learners who have been part of the e-Learning system (www.englishbuddy.kr) for elementary-level English learning, developed based on the systematic application of the motivation theory as dictated by 'interest' and 'self-determination' and put into practice at 3,100 private tutoring institutions. According to the survey conducted on 328 learners in the e-Learning system inspired by the motivation theory and on 150 learners in other English programs, the former was found to have stimulated 'interest' and satisfied 'psychological desire' in the learners, leading to the development of 'specific strategies to motivate learners.' The study has clearly identified how learners are better motivated in the e-Learning environment, demonstrating its contributions to advancing e-Learning, building a practical e-Learning system based on a systematic motivation theory defined by 'interest' and 'self-determination,' and applying the system to some 16,000 learners at 3,100 private tutoring institutions.

대학에서의 e-learning 활성화를 위한 대책과 향후 지원 방향

  • 최근 국.내외적으로 e-learning에 관한 관심이 증대되면서 e-learning과 관련된 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 또한 정부의 관련 부처들도 e-learning 발전을 위한 다양한 노력이 시도되고 있으며, 이러한 노력은 관련법을 제정하거나, 전문 기관을 신설하고, 각종 지원 제도를 정비하는 등 다각도로 구체화되고 있다. 산업계에서도 e-learning 시장을 선점하기 위하여 많은 투자와 활동들이 전개되고 있으며, e-learning을 통한 교육 시장 또한 급속히 활성화되고 있기도 하다. 이와 함께 대학이 이미 e-learning 체제를 기반으로 하는 대학내 교수학습센터 등을 설립하여 활발하게 운영하기 시작하였다. 이에 따라 e-learning의 국내시장 규모는 2002년도에 1조 7천억원 규모에 달하였으며, 2003년도에는 2조 5천억원으로 전체 교육시장의 4.5%를 차지하였다는 보고도 있다.

Exploring Optimal e-Learning Environment : The Role of Contents Organizing in e-Learning (콘텐츠 조직화를 통한 e러닝 학습환경 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • The dramatic increase in e-Learning enrollments in higher education is likely to continue. These e-Learning environments have made learning much more convenient by stretching the spatial and temporal barriers. Their effectiveness, however, remains to be examined. In this research, the author explore the importance of personalization, interactivity and the important role of contents organizing in online education environment. Furthermore, the authors divide e-learning outcome into psychomotor, cognitive, and affective outcome. Indeed, e-Learning for psychomotor outcome has been viewed as impossible. The authors discuss the implications of the findings for theory and practice.

  • 2003 년에 정부에서 여러 가지 활동과 2004 년 1월에는 산업자원부에서 'e- Learning 산업발전법' 을 공표함으로써 e- Learning 산업의 앞날이 밝아오고 있다. 하지만 아직은 전통적인 교육보다 e-Learning이 일반적으로 성과나 만족도가 떨어진다는 연구가 지배적이다 [1, 17] 이러한 상황에서 e-Learning을 확산한다는 것은 매우 어렵다. 이것은 e-Learning을 경험하는 학습자들의 만족을 통하여 e-Learning의 확산을 촉진할 수 있는데, 이를 위하여 e-Learning 환경에서 학습자들이 어떠한 요인들로써 만족을 느낄 수 있는지 알아보아야 한다. 학습자의 특성에 따라 만족도에 미치는 요인들을 찾아내어 학습자의 특성에 맞게 관리를 해줌으로써 온라인 환경에서 학습자들을 효과적으로 관리할 수 있어야 한다.

  • 본 연구는 e-Learning 컨텐츠 품질과 서비스 품질 차원을 분류하고, 학습자 특성에 따른 e-Learning 성과와의 관계를 파악하는 것이다. 이에 기존 연구에 근거하여 e-Learning 컨텐츠 품질 차원을 교수설계, 내용성, 주의성으로 분류하고, 마케팅 분야의 정보 품질 모형 중에서 Parasuraman이 제시한 SERVQUAL 측정도구를 사용하여 e-Learning 서비스 품질 차원을 유형성, 신뢰성, 대응성, 확신성, 공감성으로 분류하였다. 이들 요인들이 e-Learning 성과(학습만족과 이용의도)에 어떤 영향을 미치는가를 실정적으로 검정하고자 한다. 이들 요인들 간의 매개적 역할을 하는 많은 요인들이 존재할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 학습자의 경험적, 태도적, 행동적 특성과 자기효능감과 같은 학습자 특성의 매개 효과에 주목하고 한다.
