Application of tuned liquid dampers in controlling the torsional vibration of high rise buildings

  • Excessive motions in buildings cause occupants to become uncomfortable and nervous. This is particularly detrimental to the tenants and ultimately the owner of the building, with respect to financial considerations. Serviceability issues, such as excessive accelerations and inter-story drifts, are more prevalent today due to advancements in the structural systems, strength of materials, and design practices. These factors allow buildings to be taller, lighter, and more flexible, thereby exacerbating the impact of dynamic responses. There is a growing need for innovative and effective techniques to reduce the serviceability responses of these tall buildings. The current study considers a case study of a real building to show the effectiveness and robustness of the TLD in reducing the coupled lateral-torsional motion of this high-rise building under wind loading. Three unique multi-modal TLD systems are designed specifically to mitigate the torsional response of the building. A procedure is developed to analyze a structure-TLD system using High Frequency Force Balance (HFFB) test data from the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory (BLWTL) at the University of Western Ontario. The effectiveness of the unique TLD systems is investigated. In addition, a parametric study is conducted to determine the robustness of the systems in reducing the serviceability responses. Three practical parameters are varied to investigate the robustness of the TLD system: the height of water inside the tanks, the amplitude modification factor, and the structural modal frequencies.

  • Medium and high speed marine diesel engines have been widely used as prime mover in small car ferries and fishing vessels with reduction gear. These propulsion shafting system should be installed and matched the elastic coupling between engine and reduction gear to isolate the vibratory torque. In this paper, the elastic dynamic characteristics of coupling with rubber type circular segments is confirmed by the theoretical analysis using the FEM and the hydraulic exciting test at shop. And its adaptation is investigated in the torsional vibration test in factory shop.

  • Generally dual mass flywheel(DMF) is used as a solution to reduce noise and vibration of power train system and to improve the comfortability of passenger car. In this paper, design concept of new DMF model, analytical/numerical model, test procedure and tuning results are presented. Design parameters are studied by some numerical methods and tests. As the result, we can find more efficient model of DMF and reduce vibration level in power train system.

현수교(懸垂橋)의 비틀림진동(振動)에 관한 연구(硏究) (A Study of Torsional Vibrations of Suspended Bridges)

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 경기도(京畿道) 설계심의회(設計審議會)에서 천마산(天馬山) 청소년(靑少年) 심신수련장(心身修練場) 현수교(懸垂橋) 설계심의시(設計審議時) 현수교(懸垂橋)의 동적(動的) 거동(擧動)에 대한 설계미비(設計未備)의 원인(原因)이 아직도 체계화(體系化)되지 못한 우리 나라 현수교(懸垂橋)의 설계자료(設計資料)와 지침(指針)의 불비(不備)함에 그 동기(動機)를 얻어, 유한요소법(有限要素法)을 적용(適用)하여 현수교(懸垂橋)의 비틀림진동(振動)에 대한 고유진동수(固有振動數)와 이에 상응(相應)하는 고유진동형(固有振動形)을 구(求)하였다. 실제(實際)로 현수교(懸垂橋)의 일반적(一般的) 거동(擧動)은 수직(垂直) 수평면(水平面) 내(內)에서의 연성(連成)된 운동(運動)으로 표시(表示)되지만 사용목적(使用目的)에 부합(附合)하여 그 진폭(振幅)을 미소(微小)하도록 제한(制限)하면 수직(垂直) 비틀림 진동(振動)은 단독(單獨)으로 비연성화(非連成化)할 수 있으며, 이에 따라 해석하였다. 1973년 6월에 개통된 Streamlined Box-Girder Type인 남해대교(南海大橋)와 Lateral Bracing으로 이루어진 단경간의 천마산(天馬山)의 현수교(懸垂橋)의 설계자료(設計資料)를 이용하여 수치해(數値解)를 얻었으며, 천마산(天馬山) 현수교(懸垂橋)의 경우(境遇) 보조(補助) 보강(補强)케이블의 유무(有無)에 따른 고유진동수(固有振動數)와 진동형(振動形)을 구(求)하여 비교(比較) 검토(檢討)하였다. 보강(補强)케이블의 유무(有無)에 따라 초기의 진동수(振動數) 등에서는 그 영향이 매우 뚜렷하였으나, 진동형(振動形)이 복잡해짐에 따라 보강(補强)케이블의 영향은 미약했거나 또는 오히려 역효과를 가져왔다. 남해대교(南海大橋)에 있어서 유한요소기법(有限要素技法)과 전자계산기에 의해 본(本) 연구(硏究)에서 구한 고유진동수(固有振動數)와 남해대교(南海大橋) 건설지(建設誌)에 있는 Frequency Equation으로 구한 값 또는 풍동실험(風洞實驗)에 의한 결과(結果) 등과 비교(比較) 검토(檢討)하였으며, 비교(比較) 결과(結果) 좋은 일치(一致)를 보여주었다.

  • AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the torsional fracture resistances, cyclic fatigue resistance, and bending stiffness of two nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments made of different heat-treated alloy: Aurum Blue (heat-treated) and Aurum Pro (conventional). Methods: Forty-five Aurum Blue and Aurum Pro NiTi files were selected for the three mechanical tests (n=15). For the torsional resistance test, 3 mm file tip was fixed and the shaft was driven clockwise at 2 rpm until fracture occurred by using a customized device. Cyclic fatigue resistance was evaluated by rotating instruments in artificial canal with dynamic mode. Bending stiffness was tested by observation of the bending moment on attaining a 45° bend. The results were analyzed by student-t tests at a significance level of 95%. The fractured surface of each groups were examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: Aurum Blue showed significantly higher toughness, ultimate strength, distortion angle, and number of cycles to failure than those of Aurum Pro (p < 0.05). However, Aurum Blue and Aurum Pro did not differ significantly in terms of bending stiffness. SEM showed typical topographic appearances of the cyclic fatigue and torsional fracture. Conclusions: Under the limitations of this study, heat-treated instruments showed higher flexibility and fracture resistances than conventional NiTi instruments.

Aeroelastic model test of a 610 m-high TV tower with complex shape and structure

  • In view of the importance of the wind-structure interaction for tall and slender structures, an aeroelastic model test of the 610m-high TV tower with a complex and unique structural configuration and appearance carried out successfully. The assembled aeroelastic model of the TV tower with complex shape and structure was designed and made to ensure the similarities of the major natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes. The simulation of the atmospheric boundary layer with higher turbulent intensity is presented. Since the displacement and acceleration responses at several measurement sections were directly measured in the wind tunnel test, a multi-mode approach was presented to indirectly estimate the displacement and acceleration responses at arbitrary structural floors based on the measured ones. It can be seen that it is remarkable for the displacement and acceleration responses of the TV tower in the two horizontal directions under wind loads and is small for the dynamic response of the torsional displacement and acceleration.

  • 지표부근의 지반의 경우, 함수비가 지반의 동적 물성치에 큰 영향을 주는 요소가 된다. 본 연구에서는 함수비의 변화 때문에 발생하는 최대전단탄성계수, 전단탄성계수 감소곡선, 감쇠비의 전반적인 변화를 공진주/비틂전단 시험을 통해 평가했다. 기존의 동적물성치에 대한 다짐함수비의 영향 연구와는 달리 일정한 다짐함수비로 성형된 시료에 대하여 모관흡수력(capillary pressure)을 조절하는 방법으로 함수비를 변화시키고 이때의 동적물성치의 변화를 평가하였다. 이를 위하여 기존의 공진주/비틀전단시험 시스템을 개량하여 함수비 변화뿐만 아니라 모관흡수력의 변화에 따른 동적물성치의 변화도 함께 평가할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 실내에서 공진주/비틂전단 시험으로 결정된 함수비에 따른 전단탄성계수의 변화 양상을 동일현장(한국도로공사 시험도로)에서 수행된 크로스흘 시험결과와 비교하여 그 타당성을 검증하였으며, 현장으로의 확장 가능성을 확인하였다. 실내시험과 현장시험으로부터 구한 전단탄성계수는 합리적인 범위에서 일치하였으며, 함수비가 감소함에 따라 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다.

비보강 조적조의 동적 거동 (Dynamic Response of Unreinforced Masonry Building)

  • 본 연구는 우리나라에서 저층 주거용 건물로 널리 사용되고 있는 2층 규모의 비보강조적조 의 1/3 축소 모델에 대한 진동대 실험을 수행한 것이다. 본 연구의 주목적은 내진설계가 이루어지지 않은 조적조 건물의 내진거동을 살펴보고, 실험적 자료를 확보하는데 있다. 실험대상구조물은 횡방향으로는 대칭이지만 종방향으로는 약간 비대칭이고, 비교적 강한 다이어프램을 나타내는 콘크리트 슬래브로 되어있다. 실험체에 대한 모의 지진하중은 가속도를 점차 증가시켜가면서 종방향으로 가력하였다. 실험에서 얻은 구조물의 동적 응답자료는 진동대의 입력지진과 연관지어서 분석하였다. 더욱이 성능기초설계를 위한 성능수준을 제시하였다. 실험결과 1층에서의 전단파괴가 지배적이고 상부층은 강체거동을 보여주었다. 또한 균열 발생후에도 상당한 강도와 변형능력을 보유하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

Resonant Loop Design and Performance Test for a Torsional MEMS Accelerometer with Differential Pickoff

  • This paper presents an INS(Inertial Navigation System) grade, surface micro-machined differential resonant accelerometer(DRXL) manufactured by an epitaxially grown thick poly silicon process. The proposed DRXL system generates a differential digital output upon an applied acceleration, in which frequency transition is measured due to gap dependent electrical stiffness change. To facilitate the resonance dynamics of the electromechanical system, the micromachined DRXL device is packaged by using the wafer level vacuum sealing process. To test the DRXL performance, a nonlinear self-oscillation loop is designed based on the extended describing function technique. The oscillation loop is implemented using discrete electronic elements including precision charge amplifier and hard feedback nonlinearity. The performance test of the DRXL system shows that the sensitivity of the accelerometer is 24 Hz/g and its long term bias stability is about 2 mg($1{\sigma}$) with dynamic range of ${\sigma}70g$.
