Moving parts of the rotating and reciprocating mechanism are the most important components of the diesel engines and require very high reliability in their design. Especially the crankshaft, the key component of running gear (powertrain), is subject to complicated loadings such as bending, shear and torsion coming from firing pressure, inertia forces and torsional vibration of crankshaft system. Intrinsically they show different cyclic patterns of loading in both direction and magnitude, and thus ordinary approach of proportional loading is less valid to analyze the dynamic structural behavior of crankshaft. In this paper, new fatigue analysis method is introduced to analyze and design the crankshaft of a medium-speed diesel engine in order to consider the non-proportional multi-axial loads realistically as well as to present the general fatigue analysis approach for an engine crankshaft.
In order to develop a high speed train, various conditions have been considered. Fatigue strength assessment by the fluctuation of pressure is an important one. When high speed train passing though tunnels, the pressure wave is generated in tunnels and pressure variation by the wave is acting on carbody structure with dynamic load repeatedly. In this study, formulation for reliability based fatigue assessment method has been performed when the high speed train passes through tunnels. The formulation was based on structural reliability index method and followed the proposed ISO method. The result by this study would be a good guidance to calculate the fatigue life and reliability index of body structure.
The ride comfort is one of the most important indices which decide the quality of automotive seats. A subjective evaluation is the general method for comfort evaluation of automotive seats. But the subjective evaluation assess the individual sensibility using questionnaire. Therefore, a need to develop methodologies to obtain objective measurements of the fatigue evaluation is evident. In an effort to monitor muscle activity during driving electromyography (EMG) was employed. In an experimental setting the subjective evaluation was conducted using questionnaire under the static conditions (8 subjects) and the fatigue was induced in muscles using EMG under the dynamic conditions (2 drivers). The resultant EMG signals were then sampled for three different muscles. In test involving 2 subjects of similar size and build, utilizing four different automotive seats, test results support the use of EMG to quantify muscular fatigue as a viable means of objective evaluation for the different automotive seats.
It is common to assume identical allowable safety factors in static strength defined by mean stress and in fatigue, defined by stress amplitude. Under the load with asymmetrical cycles the safety factor is not the same. In this paper, with the consideration of unequal allowable safety (actors a general method for estimating fatigue reliability of a machine element under a combined state of stress is derived based on the theory proposed by Prof. Kececioglu and a normal distribution. The calculation of fatigue reliability fur limited life is discussed with example.
It is necessary to evaluate fatigue strength and reliability of the connecting rod which is core part in automotive engine to assure the high level of durability of automobile. For this purpose, the loading conditions in automotive engine is obtained by the dynamic analysis. Based on these results, the critical section was identified by the finite element analysis. The fatigue strength under constant amplitude was evaluated and the mean of the fatigue limit at R = -2.27 derived from the staircase method was 311.2MPa. And the failure probability( F$\sub$p/ ) derived from the strength-stress interference model is 0.0003% at the 99.99% confidence level and the mean factor of safety was 4.2.
The behavior of rocks and microcrack development due to fatigue stresses are investigated using cyclic loading tests and ultrasonic velocity measurements. Twenty six medium-grained granite samples from the Pochon area are selected for measurements. Ultrasonic velocities are measured for samples before fatigue test to characterize the pre-existing microcracks. Then, thirteen different cycles of loadings with 70% and 80% dynamic strength are applied to the samples. The ultrasonic velocities are measured again to compare velocities after applications of fatigue stress with those before applications of fatigue stress. The results show that most microcracks are developed along the direction parallel to the axis of loading and that the amount of microcracks increases, as loading levels and numbers of cycle increase.
According to the number of cold-rolled coils, the amount of roll wear and thermal expansion, and roll gap profile were calculated, by using the actual data from the finishing mill. Also, based on those data, the calculations of the deflection, the flattening, and the contact pressure of vwork rolls and backup rolls were made respectively. Specially, in the calculation of contact pressure, the numerical results were obtained not only during the normal rolling, but also during the abnormal rolling, by modeling mathematically the dynamic impact force which occurs when the head section of the strip is threading through rolls. With those results the growth of the fatigue region and the fatigue damage of rolls were predicted. Also the optimum roll-grinding depth was determined to maximize the roll life.
In the geothermal power, the geothermal fluid such as water or steam is moved from the ground to turbine a pipeline. Because the geothermal fluid with high temperature contains Cl-and SO4-, It cause to diminish the system lifetime due to the increase in the corrosion of pipeline. In the present work, the characteristics of corrosion and its fatigue of the sus316 which is used in the pipeline are evaluated experimentally. From this study, the following results can be obtained; for the case of the corrosion environment, it is found that the corrosion rate is faster than that of the steam environment by 10 to 30 times, and the corrosion fatigue limit is underestimated compared to that of steam state.
This paper presents the modeling and validation of a pile-driver breech fatigue testing system model to replicate actual high pressure in a large caliber gun barrel. A hysteresis damping function was incorporated in the nonlinear impact force model. Test of real pile-driver breech fatigue testing system had been performed for model validation. Comparison of the experimental result and model simulation during impact were made. Numerical studies were performed to evaluate how the actual chamber pressure pattern in the live firing of gun barrel was affected by parameters' variation. Some of the parameters simulated included input velocity, damping coefficient and stiffness. As a result, a variety of actual chamber pressure pattern could be reproduced and controlled through current simulation model.
Fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior of natural rubber/ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (NR/EPDM) blend vulcanizates under dynamic tearing condition was investigated by using a fracture mechanics approach. It appeared that variation of crack growth rate with blend compositions was dependent on the level of imposed tearing energy G. At low tearing energy region, the FCG rates of the blend were lower as the EPDM content was increased, while at high tearing energy region, the trend was reversed. Over the measured range of tearing energy G, all blend compositions showed the lower crack growth rates compared to the average of properties of component elastomers. When the blends were thermally aged, the fatigue resistance of the blends was deteriorated in proportion to the concentration of EPDM phase. Fatigue crack growth behavior of the blends was supposed to be associated with the inhomogeneities of the crosslink structure of the blends arising from cure incompatibility of the EPDM and NR when they are sulphur cured.
