The main objective of this paper is to develop an improved model for the analysis of liquefaction potential and to predict excess pore pressure (EPP) using the proposed model that can simulate behavior of saturated sand under earthquake loading conditions. The damage concept is adopted for the development of the proposed model. For the development of the model, a general formulation based on experimental results and damage potential using cumulative absolute velocity (CAV) is proposed for a more realistic description of dynamic responses of saturated sand. Undrained dynamic triaxial tests are conducted using earthquake loading conditions. Based on test results, the NCER-NCW function in terms of $w_d$ and CAV is developed. Procedure for the evaluation of EPP and determination of model parameters for the proposed model is presented as well. For the determination of initial liquefaction, the minimum curvature method using the NCS-NCW curve is proposed. It is observed that predicted initial liquefaction using the proposed method agrees well with measured initial liquefaction. From results of additional undrained dynamic triaxial tests, it is seen that predicted EPP generation using the proposed model agrees well with measured results for earthquake loading cases.
This study selected the indexes for evaluating the damage of the railway embankments due to liquefaction from the earthquake damage cases of railway embankments. The study correlated the selected indexes and the settlement of the embankment crest from the dynamic numerical analysis. Further, the correlation was used to develop a method for evaluating the liquefaction damage to the railway embankment. The damage cases and damage types were analyzed, and referring to the liquefaction damage assessment method for other structures, the embankment height (H), the non-liquefiable layer thickness (H1), and the liquefaction potential index were selected as indexes for evaluating the damage. The study performed dynamic effective stress analyses on the railway embankment, and the PM4-Sand model was applied as the constitutive liquefaction model for the embankment foundation ground. The model's validity was first verified by comparing it with the existing dynamic centrifugal model test results performed on the railway embankment. Nine sites where the foundation ground can be liquefied were selected from the data of 549 embankments of the Honam High-speed Railway in Korea. Further, dynamic numerical analyses using four seismic waves as input earthquake load were performed for the selected site sections. The numerical analysis results confirmed the correlation between the evaluation indexes and the embankment crest settlement. A method for efficiently evaluating the damage to the embankment due to liquefaction was proposed using the chart obtained from this correlation.

This study investigated applicability of the fast running model for damage assessment of underground structures by ground shock. For this reason, the fast running model that consists of two main models such as the ground shock generation and propagation model and the underground structural damage assessment model was developed. The ground shock generation and propagation model was programed using theoretical formula and empirical formula introduced in TM5-855-1(US army manual). The single degree of freedom model of structural components was utilized to predict structural dynamic displacements which are used as index to assess damage level of components. In order to confirm the feasibility of the developed fast running model, underground structural dynamic displacements estimated from the fast running model were compared to displacements obtained from the finite element analysis.
In order to investigate the accuracy and applicability of steel equivalent constitutive model, the calculated results were compared with typical tests of steel frames under static and dynamic loading patterns firstly. Secondly, four widely used models for time history analysis of steel frames were compared to discuss the applicability and efficiency of different methods, including shell element model, multi-scale model, equivalent constitutive model (ECM) and traditional beam element model (especially bilinear model). Four-story steel frame models of above-mentioned finite element methods were established. The structural deformation, failure modes and the computational efficiency of different models were compared. Finally, the equivalent constitutive model was applied in seismic incremental dynamic analysis of a ten-floor steel frame and compared with the cyclic hardening model without considering damage and degradation. Meanwhile, the effects of damage and degradation on the seismic performance of steel frame were discussed in depth. The analysis results showed that: damages would lead to larger deformations. Therefore, when the calculated results of steel structures subjected to rare earthquake without considering damage were close to the collapse limit, the actual story drift of structure might already exceed the limit, leading to a certain security risk. ECM could simulate the damage and degradation behaviors of steel structures more accurately, and improve the calculation accuracy of traditional beam element model with acceptable computational efficiency.
A reliable concrete constitutive material model is critical for an accurate numerical analysis simulation of reinforced concrete structures under extreme dynamic loadings including impact or blast. However, the formulation of concrete material model is challenging and entails numerous input parameters that must be obtained through experimentation. This paper presents a damage scale analytical model to characterize concrete material for its pre- and post-peak behavior. To formulate the damage scale model, statistical regression and finite element analysis models were developed leveraging twenty existing experimental data sets on concrete compressive strength. Subsequently, the proposed damage scale analytical model was implemented in the finite element analysis simulation of a reinforced concrete pier subjected to vehicle impact loading and the response were compared to available field test data to validate its accuracy. Field test and FEA results were in good agreement. The proposed analytical model was able to reliably predict the concrete behavior including its post-peak softening in the descending branch of the stress-strain curve. The proposed model also resulted in drastic reduction of number of input parameters required for LS-DYNA concrete material models.
An anisotropic damage mechanics approach is introduced which models the static and dynamic behavior of mass concrete in 3D space. The introduced numerical approach is able to model non-uniform cracking within the cracked element due to cracking in Gaussian points of elements. The validity of the proposed model is considered using available experimental and theoretical results under the static and dynamic loads. No instability and stress locking is observed in the conducted analyses. The Morrow Point dam is analyzed including dam-reservoir interaction effects to consider the nonlinear seismic behavior of the dam. It is found that the resulting crack profiles are in good agreement with those obtained from the smeared crack approach. It is concluded that the proposed model can be used in nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of concrete dams in 3D space and enables engineers to define the damage level of these infrastructures. The performance level of the considered system is used to assess the static and seismic safety using the defined performance based criteria.
A new method for both local damage(s) identification and input excitation force identification of beam structures is presented using the dynamic response sensitivity-based finite element model updating method. The state-space approach is used to calculate both the structural dynamic responses and the responses sensitivities with respect to structural physical parameters such as elemental flexural rigidity and with respect to the force parameters as well. The sensitivities of displacement and acceleration responses with respect to structural physical parameters are calculated in time domain and compared to those by using Newmark method in the forward analysis. In the inverse analysis, both the input excitation force and the local damage are identified from only several acceleration measurements. Local damages and the input excitation force are identified in a gradient-based model updating method based on dynamic response sensitivity. Both computation simulations and the laboratory work illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

A three-dimensional (3D) full-dynamic damage model for ion implantation in crystalline silicon was proposed to calculate more accurately point defect distributions and ion-implanted concentration profiles during ion implantation process. The developed model was based on the physical monte carlo approach. This model was applied to simulate B and BF2 implantation. We compared our results for damage distributions with those of the analytical kinchin-pease approach. In our result, the point defect distributions obtained by our new model are less than those of kinchin-pease approach, and the vacancy distributions differ from the interstitial distributions. The vacancy concentrations are higher than the interstitial ones before 0.8 . Rp to the silicon surface, and after the 0.8 . Rp to the silicon bulk, the interstitial concentrations are revesrsely higher than the vacancy ones. The fully-dynamic damage model for the accumulative damage during ion implantation follows all of the trajectories of both ions and recoiled silicons and, concurrently, the cumulative damage effect on the ions and the recoiled silicons are considered dynamically by introducing the distributon probability of the point defect. In addition, the self-annealing effect of the vacancy-interstitial recombination during ion implantation at room temperature is considered, which resulted in the saturation level for the damage distribution.
Automated damage detection through Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques has become an active area of research in the bridge engineering community but widespread implementation on in-service infrastructure still presents some challenges. In the meantime, visual inspection remains as the most common method for condition assessment even though collected information is highly subjective and certain types of damage can be overlooked by the inspector. In this article, a Frequency Response Functions-based model updating algorithm is evaluated using experimentally collected data from the University of Central Florida (UCF)-Benchmark Structure. A protocol for measurement selection and a regularization technique are presented in this work in order to provide the most well-conditioned model updating scenario for the target structure. The proposed technique is composed of two main stages. First, the initial finite element model (FEM) is calibrated through model updating so that it captures the dynamic signature of the UCF Benchmark Structure in its healthy condition. Second, based upon collected data from the damaged condition, the updating process is repeated on the baseline (healthy) FEM. The difference between the updated parameters from subsequent stages revealed both location and extent of damage in a "blind" scenario, without any previous information about type and location of damage.
The diagnosis of bridge serviceability is carried out by a combination of in-situ visual inspection, static and dynamic loading tests and analyses. Structural health monitoring (SHM) using information technology and sensors is increasingly being used for providing a better estimate of structural performance characteristics rather than above traditional methods. Because the mechanical behavior of bridges with various kinds of damage can not be made clear, it is very difficult to estimate both the damage mode and degree of damage of existing bridges. In this paper, the sensitivity of both static and dynamic behaviors of bridges are studied as a measure of damage assessment through experiments on model bridges induced with some specified artificial damages. And, a method of damage assessment of bridges based on those behaviors is discussed in detail. Finally, based on the results, a possible application for structural health monitoring systems for existing bridges is also discussed.
