One of the most important requirements in the evaluation of existing structural systems and ensuring a safe performance during their service life is damage assessment. Damage can be defined as a weakening of the structure that adversely affects its current or future performance which may cause undesirable displacements, stresses or vibrations to the structure. The mass and stiffness of a structure will change due to the damage, which in turn changes the measured dynamic response of the system. Damage detection can increase safety, reduce maintenance costs and increase serviceability of the structures. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are simplified models of the human brain and evolved as one of the most useful mathematical concepts used in almost all branches of science and engineering. ANNs have been applied increasingly due to its powerful computational and excellent pattern recognition ability for detecting damage in structural engineering. This paper presents and reviews the technical literature for past two decades on structural damage detection using ANNs with modal parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes as inputs.
Identification of the nonlinear hysteretic behavior of a reinforced concrete (RC) bridge pier subjected to earthquake loads is carried out based on acceleration measurements of the earthquake motion and bridge responses. The modified Takeda model is used to describe the hysteretic behavior of the RC pier with a small number of parameters, in which the nonlinear behavior is described in logical forms rather than analytical expressions. Hence, the modified extended Kalman filter is employed to construct the state transition matrix using a finite difference scheme. The sequential modified extended Kalman filter algorithm is proposed to identify the unknown parameters and the state vector separately in two steps, so that the size of the problem for each identification procedure may be reduced and possible numerical problems may be avoided. Mode superposition with a modal sorting technique is also proposed to reduce the size of the identification problem for the nonlinear dynamic system with multi-degrees of freedom. Example analysis is carried out for a continuous bridge with a RC pier subjected to earthquake loads in the longitudinal and transverse directions.
Methods for identification of modal properties of linear structures are presented. The extended Kalman filtering technique is employed. The state equation is formulated by two different ways, namely by the time domain and frequency domain approaches. Verifications are carried out by using the simulated records of ground acceleration and structural response. Then the techniques are applied to the estimation of modal parameters of a scaled model for a 3-story building which is installed on a shaking table.

The purpose of this work is to analyze the vibration characteristic of boring bar with dynamic vibration absorber and find out the effective design parameters. Using the finite element method and modified optimum design concept, conventional optimum design based on approximate lumped parameter model is checked and practical design to be measured with modal analysis is compared with optimum design from numerical analysis. Also, the performance of reducing vibration is investigated with variation of shape of boring bar. The considered model of boring bar with dynamic vibration absorber is selected among manufactured boring bars with the best performance.

Dynamic characteristics of current collection system is one of the major factors which decide the performance of high speed train. To find good design parameters of the current collection system design guide is prepared through the engineering analysis in this study. The analysis starts from the statics of catenary system which results in the sinusoidal variation of stiffness, which is inherently nonlinear Mathieu equation. Simple physical models of rigid trolley wire and Mathieu equation are considered. To simulate the dynamic response of current collection system, numerical integration based on central difference method and modal analysis are presented. The calculated results of central difference method show superior to those of Euler based algorithm.
The dynamic and structural responses of a 1000-m long circular submerged floating tunnel (SFT) with both ends fixed under survival irregular-wave excitations are investigated. The floater-mooring nonlinear and elastic coupled dynamics are modeled by a time-domain numerical simulation program, OrcaFlex. Two configurations of mooring lines i.e., vertical mooring (VM) and inclined mooring (IM), and four different buoyancy-weight ratios (BWRs) are selected to compare their global performances. The result of modal analysis is included to investigate the role of the respective natural frequencies and elastic modes. The effects of various submergence depths are also checked. The envelopes of the maximum/minimum horizontal and vertical responses, accelerations, mooring tensions, and shear forces/bending moments of the entire SFT along the longitudinal direction are obtained. In addition, at the mid-section, the time series and the corresponding spectra of those parameters are also presented and analyzed. The pros and cons of the two mooring shapes and high or low BWR values are systematically analyzed and discussed. It is demonstrated that the time-domain numerical simulation of the real system including nonlinear hydro-elastic dynamics coupled with nonlinear mooring dynamics is a good method to determine various design parameters.

Moment-resisting frames (MRFs) are among the most conventional steel structures for mid-rise buildings in many earthquake-prone cities. Here, a simplified performance-based methodology is proposed for the seismic collapse capacity assessment of these buildings. This method employs a novel multi-mode pushover analysis to determine the engineering demand parameters (EDPs) of the regular steel MRFs up to the collapse prevention (CP) performance level. The modal combination coefficients used in the proposed pushover analysis, are obtained from two metaheuristic optimization algorithms and a fitting procedure. The design variables for the optimization process are the inter-story drift ratio profiles resulting from the multi-mode pushover analyses, and the objective values are the outcomes of the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). Here, the collapse capacity of the structures is assessed in three to five steps, using a modified IDA procedure. A series of regular mid-rise steel MRFs are selected and analyzed to calculate the modal combination coefficients and to validate the proposed approach. The new methodology is verified against the current existing approaches. This comparison shows that the suggested method more accurately evaluates the EDPs and the collapse capacity of the regular MRFs in a robust and easy to implement way.

Modal parameters including resonant frequencies and mode shapes are heavily utililized in most damage identification throries for structural health monitoring. However, extracting modal parameters from dynamic responses needs postprocessing which inevitably involves errors in curve-fitting resonants as well as transforming the domain of responses. In this paper, the applicability of a damage identification method based on free vibration responses to the in-sevice responses is experimentally verified. The experiment is performed via applying periodic and nonperiodic moving loads to a simply supported beam and displacement responses are measured. The moving load is simulated using steel balls and a downhill device. The damage identification results show that the in-service response may be applicable to identifying damage in the beam.

Micro wave seeker consists of a gimbal structure, a antenna and many RF parts. And Missile's propelling powers excite a gimbal structure, a antenna and many RF parts. Therefore, We must inquire into external forces to act on a micro wave seeker before everything. We must inquire into design parameters and then estimate dynamic characteristics of a gimbal structure with a finite element model to reflect part's characteristics for design for a gimbal structure in consideration of vibration features. In this paper, a gimbal structure of a micro wave seeker is modeled in finite element method and then updated by using the experimental modal data. Before we make a finite element model of a gimbal structure of a micro wave seeker, we make a finite element model of a sub-structure and compare with the experimental modal data.
Detection of damages in fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) composite structures is important from the safety and serviceability point of view. Usually, damage is realized as a local reduction of stiffness and if dynamic responses of the structure are sensitive enough to such changes in stiffness, then a well posed inverse problem can provide an efficient solution to the damage detection problem. Usually, such inverse problems are solved within the framework of pattern recognition. Support Vector Machine (SVM) Algorithm is one such methodology, which minimizes the weighted differences between the experimentally observed dynamic responses and those computed using the finite element model- by optimizing appropriately chosen parameters, such as stiffness. A damage detection strategy is hereby proposed using SVM which perform stepwise by first locating and then determining the severity of the damage. The SVM algorithm uses simulations of only a limited number of damage scenarios and trains the algorithm in such a way so as to detect damages at unknown locations by recognizing the pattern of changes in dynamic responses. A rectangular fiber reinforced plastic composite plate has been investigated both numerically and experimentally to observe the efficiency of the SVM algorithm for damage detection. Experimentally determined modal responses, such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are used as observable parameters. The results are encouraging since a high percentage of damage cases have been successfully determined using the proposed algorithm.
