In this study, vibration characteristics of a gravity-based caisson-foundation breakwater system are investigated for ambient and geometric parameters such as various waves, sea levels, and foundation conditions. To achieve the objective, following approaches are implemented. Firstly, operational modal analysis methods are selected to identify vibration modes from output-only dynamic responses. Secondly, a finite element model of an existing caisson-foundation breakwater system is established by using a structural analysis program, ANSYS. Thirdly, forced vibration analyses are performed on the caisson-foundation system for two types of external forces such as controlled impacts and wave-induced dynamic pressures. For the ideal impact, the wave force is converted to a triangular impulse function. For the wave flow, the wave pressure acting on the system is obtained from wave field analysis. Fourthly, vibration modes of the caisson-foundation system are identified from the forced vibration responses by combined use of the operational modal analysis methods. Finally, vibration characteristics of the caisson-foundation system are investigated under various waves, sea levels, and foundations. Relative effects of foundation conditions on vibration characteristics are distinguished from that induced by waves and sea levels.
Identification of vibration parameters from the analysis of the dynamic response of a structure plays a key role in current health monitoring systems. This study evaluates the capabilities of the recently developed Synchrosqueezed Wavelet Transform (SWT) to extract instant frequencies and damping values from the simulated noise-contaminated response of a structure. Two approaches to estimate the modal damping ratio from the results of the SWT are presented. The results obtained are compared to other signal processing methods based on Continuous Wavelet (CWT) and Hilbert-Huang (HHT) transforms. It was found that the time-frequency representation obtained via SWT is sharped than the obtained using just the CWT and it allows a more robust extraction of the individual modal responses than using the HHT. However, the identification of damping ratios is more stable when the CWT coefficients are employed.
Structural identification via modal analysis in structural mechanics is gaining popularity in recent years, despite conceptual difficulties connected with its use. This paper is devoted to illustrate both the capabilities and the indeterminacy characterizing structural identification problems even in quite simple instances, as well as the cautions that should be accordingly adopted. In particular, we discuss an application of an identification technique of variational type, based on the measurement of eigenfrequencies and mode shapes, to a steel frame with friction joints under various assembling conditions. Experience has suggested, so as to restrict the indeterminacy frequently affecting identification issues, having resort to all the a priori acknowledged information on the system, to the symmetry and presence of structural elements with equal stiffness, to mention one example, and mindfully selecting the parameters to be identified. In addition, considering that the identification techniques have a local character and correspond to the updating of a preliminary model of the structure, it is important that the analytical model on the first attempt should be adequately accurate. Secondly, it has proved determinant to cross the results of the dynamic identification with tests of other typology, for instance, static tests, so as to fully understand the structural behavior and avoid the indeterminacy due to the nonuniqueness of the inverse problem.

A new seismic design methodology for precast concrete diaphragms has been developed and incorporated into the current American seismic design code. This design methodology recognizes that diaphragm inertial forces during earthquakes are highly influenced by higher dynamic vibration modes and incorporates the higher mode effect into the diaphragm seismic design acceleration determination using a first mode reduced method, which applies the response modification coefficient only to the first mode response but keeps the higher mode response unreduced. However the first mode reduced method does not consider effects of diaphragm flexibility, which plays an important role on the diaphragm seismic response especially for the precast concrete diaphragm. Therefore this paper investigated the effect of diaphragm flexibility on the diaphragm seismic design acceleration for precast concrete shear wall structures through parametric studies. Several design parameters were considered including number of stories, diaphragm geometries and stiffness. It was found that the diaphragm flexibility can change the structural dynamic properties and amplify the diaphragm acceleration during earthquakes. Design equations for mode contribution factors considering the diaphragm flexibility were first established through modal analyses to modify the first mode reduced method in the current code. The modified first mode reduced method has then been verified through nonlinear time history analyses.
The use of pre-tensioned shape memory alloy (SMA) wires to retrofit historic masonry structures is investigated. A small wall, serving as a prototype masonry specimen, is constructed to undergo a series of shaking-table tests. It is first studied in its original state, and its dynamic characteristics (in terms of modal frequencies) are extracted from the recorded signals. The results are then compared with those obtained when an increasing number of couples of pre-stressed SMA wires are introduced in the specimen to link the bricks together. A three-dimensional finite element model of the specimen is developed and calibrated according to the modal parameters identified from each experimental test (with and without SMA wires). The calibration process is conducted by enhancing the masonry mechanical behaviour. The results and the effectiveness of the approach are presented.

SMD(Surface Mounting Device) which mounts electronic components as IC-Chips on PCB automatically, produces a large dynamic force and vibration. The unwanted vibrations in SMD degrade the performance of the precision device and it is the major obstacle to limit its speed for mounting. This study investigated the vibration analysis of a typical SMD to predict the natural frequencies and mode shapes. To validate the finite element analysis of SMD, the FE result was compared with that of ODS measurements. It was shown that the predicted results were well correlated with the experimental modal parameters.

The squeal of drum brakes was investigated numerically and experimentally. Modal testings were performed for shoes, drums, backing plates and their assemblies. In order to predict the squeal phenomena, stability analysis was performed based on a simplified self-excited vibration model. Based on modal testings, the dynamic properties of the brake elements and the parameters used in this analysis were determined. The geometries of shoes and drums were also considered. The result shows that the modification methods of the shoe and the drum design are feasible for noise reduction.
In this work, we propose a new type of HDD Load/unload (L/UL) suspension featuring shape memory alloy (SMA). The mechanical and thermal properties of the SMA film with respect to the material phase states are experimentally estimated and the SMA film is carefully integrated to the suspension. In order to obtain the desirable dynamic characteristics of the suspension during L/UL process, the design parameters of the SMA film such as geometric properties are determined by considering the vibration modes of the suspension related to the L/UL performance. After analyzing the modal characteristics of the proposed suspension, L/UL performance is evaluated through L/UL simulation by observing the vibration motion and minimum flying height of the slider during L/UL process.

This paper presents the results of structural identification of a safety-related valve for nuclear power plant by impact hammer test as well as shaking table tests by using broadband random wave and sine sweep excitation. The test specimen is a Y-type motor operated globe valve. The test was performed as a "support test" to validate the analytically obtained modal parameters of the valve during its seismic qualification process by analytical method. From the study results it has been found that the shaking table test generally yields higher natural frequencies and lower damping values compared with those of impact hammer test. And it has been recognized that impact hammer test for modal identification of complex structures should be applied very carefully to get reasonable results.e results.
