  • The natural dyeing industry has been faced with increasing demands of constant needs for environmentally and body friendly clothing products among modern consumers. Natural dyeing has attracted attention as a next-generation technology in green textiles. Dyestuffs need to be diversified for technological development activation in order to meet the increasing demands for natural dyeing. This study extracted dyeing solutions from the leaves of the Rose of Sharon (the national flower of South Korea) and investigated its dyeing properties for the development of various natural dyestuffs. This study investigates the dyeability of silk fabrics with Rose of Sharon leaves extract. Optimal conditions for dyeing of silk fabrics with the extract of Rose of Sharon were $40^{\circ}C/80min$ and $90^{\circ}C/60min$ with 100% concentration. Looking at the results, it showed the best K/S value at pH3, Sn pre-mordanting and Fe post-mordanting. Color fastness to washing, dry cleaning, rubbing and perspiration was good at grade 4-5 or 4. However, light fastness was observed in grade 2. In aspect of functional property, it showed an excellent result of 90% deodorization rate. In addition, its proven functionalities (deodorant properties) will help to produce high value added environment-friendly products. Those findings demonstrate the possibilities of the Rose of Sharon as an environment-friendly dye.

  • Fluorane dyes has been widely used for pressure and heat sensitive recording system as color forming materials. A new method of synthesizing fluorane dye by the Bamberger reaction has been developed. Electorchromic properties of fluorane dyes was discussed. The fading reaction kinetics follow a first-order relationship and resolved in two kinetics of first-order reaction with rate constant $k_1$ and $k_2$.

  • In general, acid dyes been used for silk dyeing, but acid dyed silk shows weakness in color fastess, To improve this defect, the silk dyed with Acid Mordant Blue 13 was treated with chromes salts solution. Some mechanical properties and dyeing behaviors of the chrome mordant with dyed silk fabric were tested in this work. The tensile strength of silk fabric treated with chrome salts solution was decreased as the duration of treatment was increased. The mean rate constant (K) of photo-degradation was 1.019, and 1.047 after treated with Cr (III) and Cr (Ⅵ), respectively, whereas it was 1.304 in untreatment. The washing fastness of silk fabric also was improved by treatment with mordant and it was 3rd-4th grade and 4th grade when silk was treated with Cr (III) and Cr (Ⅵ), respectively, while untreatment gave 1st grade. The colour of dyed silk fabric was 2.5RP.3/10, but it was 5PB.4/3 and 5PB. 4/4 when the silk fabric was treated with Cr (III) for two hours and with Cr (Ⅵ) for one hour at 90$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • This study investigated the thermal degradation and fading behavior of PTT dyed with vat dye and its dyeing ability. The PTT sample was dyed with vat dye using an acid treatment and pad-steam method to improve the dyeing performance. This method made dye particle nanosize and allowed it to penetrate the polymer material easily. The sample dyed using the pad-steam method showed level dyeing and enhanced dyeing affinity, compared to the batch-dyeing method. The degradation behavior of PTT dyed with vat dye after each heat and UV treatment was examined with the change in tensile strength or K/S value on the sample. The tensile strength and K/S values of the sample dyed with vat dye after the heat and UV treatment decreased with increasing temperature and exposure time. Although they showed high degradation under severe conditions, its rate constant was improved compared to the samples dyed with disperse dye. Consequently, acid treatment and the pad-steam method resulted in the introduction of vat dye on PTT. In addition, the PTT dyed with vat dye showed enhanced thermal and UV resistance because of their high molecular weight and chemical structure for stable adsorption behavior.

  • In order to investigate the degradation behavior of PET fabrics, sodium diethylene glycolate (SDEG)-diethylene glycol (DEG) solutions were prepared and PET fabrics were treated in the solution. The dissolution rate constant and apparent activation energy of the PET fabrics were calculated by Eyring's and Arrhenius's equation respectively and measured dyeing properties, moisture and antistatic properties. Then compared SDEG-treated fabrics with NaOH-treated. The results were as follows; 1. PET fabrics decreased their weight in SDEG-DEG solution, and the decreasing rate showed a linear relationship to the treating time at constant temperature and concentration of SDEG-DEG solution. 2. The dissolution rate constant showed a linear relationship to the concentration of SDEGDEG solution and an exponential relationship to treating temperature. 3. Apparent activation energy of dissolution was 23.45 kcal/mol. 4. The K/S values and the ΔL values of fabrics treated with SDEG-DEG solution are higher and lower respectively than fabrics treated with NaOH. 5. SDEG-DEG solution treatment improved fabric's moisture regain and it reached almost maximum at about 40% weight loss. 6. In the both reagent the light, wet and sublimation fastness of fabrics are similar. 7. SDEG-DEG solution gave more electrical discharge effect to the fabrics than that of NaOH. 8. NaOH treated PET microfiber have crater-like surface, while SDEG-DEG solution give bathochromic effect to the PET microfiber because which has wrinkles on the surface.

  • The physical properties and the dyeability of the easily dyeable polyester yarn(EDY) were investigated and compared with those of regular polyester (REG-PET). The EDY, copolymerized with small amount of polyethylene glycol(PEG), showed higher intensity of aliphatic CH peak in IR spectrum, lower density and lower compactness than those of the REG-PET from the analysis of IR, density gradient column and XRD respectively. In the physical properties, the EDY has lowers $T_g,\;T_m$, specific stress and initial modulus, and also has higher strain than that of the REG-PET. The EDY can be dyed under atmospheric pressure and its dyeing rate was faster than REG-PET due to low $T_d$, and this seems to be caused by the increased flexibility of Polymer chain in amorphous region of the EDY due to the copolymerization of PEG.ns being within the experimental error, the average values of lifetim. $\tau$(t) are taken for further calculations. Rate constants such as Stern-Volmer quenching constants K$_{sv}$, quenching rate parameters k$_q$ and k''$_q$, static quenching constant V and kinetic distance r are determined using the modified Stern-Volmer eq.tion and sphere of action static quenching model. In order to see whether the reactions are diffusion limited, equations k$_q$ = e$^{-Eq/RT}$ and k''$_q$ = e$^{-Eq/RT}$ are used to determine the values of E$_q$ and E''$_q$, the activati. energies for collisional quenching and the values of E$_q$ are 14.53, 17.28 and 16.20 kJ mole$^{-1}$ for MPNO1, MPNO2 and 2-PI respectively and the values of E''$_q$ are 14.62 and 17.73 for MPNO1 and MPNO2 respectively. From the magnitudes of various quantities it has.een concluded that the reactions are diffusion limited and the observed positive deviations in the S-V plot are due to static and dynamic quenching.
