Detailed 3 dimensional structure of Asian dust plume has been analyzed from the retrieved aerosol data from two different satellites which are the Korea's $1^{st}$ geostationary satellite, namely the Communication, Ocean, Meteorological Satellite (COMS) spacecraft launched in 2010, and the NASA's Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO). COMS spacecraft provides the first time resolved aerial aerosol maps by the systematically well-calibrated multispectral measurements from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) instrument. GOCI data are used here to evaluate intensity, spatial distribution, and long-range transport of Asian dust plume during 1~2 May 2011. We found that the strong Asian dust plume showing AOT of 2~5 was lofted to the altitude around 2~4 km above the Earth's surface and transported over Yellow Sea with a speed of about 25 km/hr. The CALIPSO extinction coefficient and particulate depolarization ratio (PDR) profiles confirmed that nonspherical dust particles were enriched in the dust plume. This study is a first example of quantitative integration of GOCI and CALIOP measurements for clarifying the overall structure of an Asian dust event.
Recently, the problem of air pollution is drawing attention as a social problem worldwide. Particularly, fine dust is the biggest issue among air pollutants, and it is analyzed that fine dust is generated from air pollutants such as burning fossil fuels such as petroleum or coal, or exhaust gases from automobiles. In addition, yellow dust originating from China adjacent to Korea flows into the Korean Peninsula in a western wind, causing the concentration of fine dust to deteriorate. Fine dust is a harmful substance to the human body such as asthma or respiratory disease, and awareness of the risk is also increasing to a degree designated as a primary carcinogen. In this study, as a method for improving the indoor air quality, the Properties of the matrix according to the mixing ratio of powdered activated carbon based on blast furnace slag are reviewed. The flexural strength and compressive strength were measured, and a fine dust concentration measurement experiment will be conducted later.
Objectives: This study was intended to investigate the revision status of the occupational exposure standards for aluminum at home and abroad; to investigate worker exposure at domestic aluminum manufacturing and handling workplaces; to conduct social and economic evaluation for the revision of domestic aluminum exposure limits. Methods: We investigated the current status of occupational exposure limits for aluminum at home and abroad, and analyzed supporting data. An exposure survey was conducted targeting domestic aluminum manufacturing and handling workplaces. Based on these, revised aluminum occupational exposure limits were proposed. Results: The major aluminum exposure limits at home and abroad show a notable difference. The toxicity of aluminum, which was revealed through animal experiments and epidemiological investigations. The average concentration of aluminum in the air at 12 workplaces was 0.016 mg/m3, and the maximum was 0.0776 mg/m3. When total dust and respiratory dust were measured side by side and simultaneously for the same process, 12.1% of the total mass concentration of aluminum dust was respiratory dust. As a result of measuring and comparing the size distribution of dust with an optical particle counter in real time, 48.1% of the total dust in the form of welding fume and pyro-powder was respiratory dust. Based on the literature review and workplace survey, three proposals for changing the aluminum exposure limit were proposed. Proposal (1): For all types, 10 mg/m3 is unified as the exposure limit except for soluble salts and alkyls. Proposal (2): 1(R) mg/m3 as the exposure limit for all forms except soluble salts and alkyl. Proposal (3): 1(R) mg/m3 for pyro-powder and welding fume, and 10 mg/m3 for metal dust, aluminum oxide, and insoluble compounds as exposure standards. A pyro-powder was defined as dry aluminum powder of 200 mesh size (74 ㎛) or smaller (larger size classified as metal dust). Reason for setting: In the workplace survey, the ratio of respiratory dust to total dust was analyzed to be about 1:10, so it was judged that the domestic standard and the ACGIH standard were compatible. Conclusions: In all scenarios according to the revision of the exposure standard, the B/C ratio was greater than 1 or only benefits existed, so it was evaluated as sufficiently reasonable as a result of the socio-economic evaluation.
In this paper, the experimental investigation for the setting properties of cement paste, the consistency and strength properties of mortar with steel furnace slag dust was performed and compared with those of cement paste and mortar with ground granulated blast furnace slag. When steel furnace slag dust was replaced with normal portland cement, setting time and flow value indicated to good results like as mortar with ground granulated blast furnace slag. However, mortar with steel furnace slag dust expressed to appreciably strength devaluation according to containing ratio, and did not indicate the pozzolanic reaction like as ground granulated blast furnace slag.
In recent years, harmful substances and fine dust in the air are caused by respiratory and cardiovascular diseases through various mechanisms when they are introduced into the human body through respiration, thereby exacerbating human health and causing cancer by prolonged exposure do. In order to prevent such fine dust from being introduced into the room and to improve indoor air quality, improvement of air quality has attracted attention. Among indoor air pollutants, fine dust and CO2 are pollutants that are directly affected by indoor number and activity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the basic performance of cement matrix using photosynthetic bacteria as a basic study of fine dust and CO2 adsorption type matrix to suppress indoor air pollution and improve air quality.
The occurrence and strength of the Asian Dust over the Korea Peninsular have been increased by the expansion of the desert area. For the continuous monitoring of the Asian Dust event, the geostationary satellites provide useful information by detecting the outbreak of the event as well as the long-range transportation of dust. The Infrared Optical Depth Index (IODI) derived from the MTSAT-1R data, indicating a quantitative index of the dust intensity, has been produced in real-time at Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) since spring of 2007 for the forecast of Asian dust. The data processing algorithm for IODI consists of mainly two steps. The first step is to detect dust area by using brightness temperature difference between two thermal window channels which are influenced with different extinction coefficients by dust. Here we use dynamic threshold values based on the change of surface temperature. In the second step, the IODI is calculated using the ratio between current IR1 brightness temperature and the maximum brightness temperature of the last 10 days which we assume the clear sky. Validation with AOD retrieved from MODIS shows a good agreement over the ocean. Comparison of IODI with the ground based PM10 observation network in Korea shows distinct characteristics depending on the altitude of dust layer estimated from the Lidar data. In the case that the altitude of dust layer is relatively high, the intensity of IODI is larger than that of PM10. On the other hand, when the altitude of dust layer is lower, IODI seems to be relatively small comparing with PM10 measurement.
The properties of fresh and hardened concrete made using three types of artificial cold bonded aggregates are determined. The properties, namely, slump, water absorption, compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of concrete containing artificial aggregate are reported. The variables considered are aggregate type and water-to-cement ratio. Three types of cold bonded aggregates are prepared using fly ash and quarry dust. The water-to-cement ratio of 0.35, 0.45, 0.55 and 0.65 is used. The test result indicates that artificial aggregates can be recommended for making the concrete up to a strength grade of 38 MPa. The use of quarry dust in the production of artificial aggregate mitigates environmental concerns on disposal problems of the dust. Hence, the alternate material proposed in this study is a green technology in concrete production.
The submerged injection smelting process was performed to recover Zn and Pb from steel dust throuth vaporization and to investigate the effect of temperature, slag composition, injection time, gas flow rate, etc. on the recoveries of valuable metals. The results show that vaporation rates of zinc and lead increased at higher temperture and higher moral ratio of ferrous to ferric oxides. In the initial stage of submerged injection of nitrogen gas, the molten slags of the dust have high value of molar ratio of $Fe^{2+}$/$Fe^{3+}$ and hence zinc and lead can be effectively recovered.
Recently, due to air pollution caused by fine dust, it is considered as a social problem. Increasing fine dust has intensified air pollution, causing many diseases and damages. This year, Seoul, South Korea, reached a severe level of fine dust pollution worldwide. The Ministry of Environment has strengthened the environmental standard for fine dust (PM2.5) from $50{\mu}g/m^3$ to $35{\mu}g/m^3$ since March 2018. When fine dust enters the human body, it causes bronchial or skin elongation such as respiratory allergies, irritable pneumonia, asthma and atopy. In this study, $TiO_2$ rutile with photocatalytic activity was used, and materials prepared by rutile sulfuric acid method were used. The photocatalytic activity rate is 95% or more and the density is $4.1g/cm^3$. The matrix was based on cement, and the substitution rate of $TiO_2$ was 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 (%). The test item is flexural strength and compressive strength.
