  • In this paper, effects of potassium permanganate, pottasium dichromate, sodium molybdate on lean duplex stainless steel were studied by GDOES, OCP, potentiodynamic curves. The stainless steels were chemically passivated in each nitric acid solutions containing 4wt.% oxidants for 1 hour. As a result, when potassium dichromate or sodium molybdate was added, content of Fe was decreased and content of Cr was increased. Consequently, corrosion resistance of passive film was increased. But in case of potassium permanganate was added, contrastively, content of Fe was increased and content of Cr was decreased. So corrosion resistance was decreased. Adding sodium molybdate in nitric acid for chemical surface treatment process was the most effective among oxidants and also it showed the most stable anti-corrosion in SST.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influence of a sigma phase precipitation on the pitting corrosion resistance and microstructural change of super duplex stainless steels(UNS S32750). The welds made by FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) were heat treated ($930^{\circ}C$, $1080^{\circ}C$, $1230^{\circ}C$) and quenched. Based on the microstructural examination, it was found that the ${\sigma}$ phase was formed in base metals and welds heat treated at $930^{\circ}C$ while there were little ${\sigma}$phases formed in base metals and weld metal experienced the relatively fast cooling from $1080^{\circ}C$ and $1230^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the most weight loss due to pitting corrosion occurred in base and weld metals heat treated at $930^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that the pitting corrosion occurred in the phase boundaries of ferrite/sigma and austenite/sigma. The pitting corrosion resistance decreased owing to an increase in Cr, Mo depleted areas adjacent to the intermetallic phases such as ${\sigma}$phases. The hardness was greatly increased due to the precipitation ${\sigma}$phases.

  • Oxidation behavior of STS 304 and 430, produced by POSCO, Korea, was studied in order to study the surface defects formed during manufacturing processes. Oxidation experiments were carried out in a preheat-ed furnace at 850~$1, 250^{\circ}C$ in air and in a simulated coke oven gas(COG) atmosphere. The reaction products were examined by XRD, SEM and EDX on their surfaces and cross sections. Protective $Cr_2O_3$-primary oxide film was formed initially, but at critical point this film was broken and a duplex scale consisting of $Fe_2O_3$- and Fe$Cr_2O_4$- was formed. It was more severely attacked in a simulated COG atmosphere than in air, and STS 304 was superior to STS 430 in oxidation resistance.

  • Cast duplex stainless steels are susceptible to thermal aging during long-term service at temperatures ranging from $280^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$. To analyze the effect of thermal aging on leak-before-break (LBB) behavior, three-dimensional finite element analysis models were built for circumferentially cracked pipes. Based on the elasticeplastic fracture mechanics theory, the detectable leakage crack length calculation and J-integral stability assessment diagram approach were carried out under different bending moments. The LBB curves and LBB assessment diagrams for unaged and thermally aged pipes were constructed. The results show that the detectable leakage crack length for thermally aged pipes increases with increasing bending moments, whereas the critical crack length decreases. The ligament instability line and critical crack length line for thermally aged pipes move downward and to the left, respectively, and unsafe LBB assessment results will be produced if thermal aging is not considered. If the applied bending moment is increased, the degree of safety decreases in the LBB assessment.
