  • The study area is a pocket beach which consisted of sandy beach, dune, agricultural land and residential area etc. The coastal dune area is classified to foredune, dune plain, secondary (or back) dune. The foredune area is covered by herbaceous dune plants(ex. Carex kobomugi, Wedelia prostrata, etc.), whereas the dune plain area is covered by herbs and shrubs(Vitex rotundifolia). The most inner area, secondary dune, is planted by pine forest(Pinus thunbergii). The mean size of the beach and dune sediments ranges from 1.1 to $1.8{\Phi}$, which mean these values are higher than normal sediments. Sorting and Skewness is $0.6{\sim}-1.2{\Phi}$ and $-2.7{\sim}1.6{\Phi}$ respectively. We found that the soil formation process in the secondary dune area has been progressed rapidly from the analysis of fine grain content, organic matter content, and CEC.

  • The coastal alluvial plain, sand dune, tidal nat might be the most prominent coastal landscape in western coast of Korea. The purpose of this paper is to examine the irrigation and drainage systems of the alluvial plain in the tidal coast. This study is concerned on the geomorphological and cultural landscapes of the alluvial plain in the western coast of the South Jeolla Province. The alluvial deposits have developed mainly by the actions of tidal currents, rather than transporting sediments by stream. The transformation of plain has been affected by human agency since 1920's. Dwellers have constructed the reservoir, banks, dammed pools, lock gates, and tide-dykes for the reclamation, irrigation, and drainage on the alluvial plain, coastal sanddune, and tidal flats.

  • The paleovegetation environments relevant to the geomorphic properties were constructed by pollen analysis in the coastal dune (S1) and marginal trench (S4) of Ssangho at the Osan-ri site. The organic sand layer in the coastal dune (S1) accumulated on the remains of the Neolithic Age correlates to approximately 4,000 yr BP and the pollen zone can be divided with a boundary of approximately 2,000 yr BP. Pinus thunbergii definitely dominated and a small quantity of Quercus. Pollenzone I can be characterized by the dominance of AP and Compositae. The pollenzone II as the dominant period of NAP like Gramineae, Artemisia and Fagopyrum shows the properties of agricultural period. During the times of accumulation of upper organic layer in alluvial plain (S4), broad-leaved trees such as Alnus were dominant and Compositae, Gramineae, Artemisia, Typha, Umbelliferae and Persicaria show the high occurrence rates. The pollen composition of S4 indicates the agricultural activities with the dominance of NAP and correlates to the pollenzone II of the coastal dune (S1).

  • The Swan Coastal Plain, on which the City of Perth (pop. 1.32 million) is situated, is formed of aeolian sands of Pleistocene-Recent age. The mainly unconsolidated sediments build a series of dune lines paralleling the coastline. The near-surface water-table sees expression in numerous shallow freshwater lakes and marshes in the interdunal depressions. The sands are highly permeable, and 〉 70% of the city’s total water supply is derived from this local aquifer. (omitted)

  • The lowest formation of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup, the Nakdong Formation, unconformably overlies the gneiss complex basement in Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do and Gwangyang, Chullanam-do. The Nakdong Formation of the study area is 500-600 m thick and occurs as a belt shape. Based upon lithology, sedimentary structure, and bedding geometry the formation consists of three conglomerate facies (Gd, Gn, Gic), five sandstone facies (Sh-n, Sh-i, Sp, Sr, Sm), and four mudstone facies (Mf, Mfn, Mc, Mv). Sandstone facies are the most prominent in the study area. The twelve facies can be grouped into five facies associations. The depositional settings are elucidated from analyses of 12 facies and five facies associations of the formation. The lower part of the Nakdong Formation was deposited in alluvial plain, and the middle and upper parts were in a riverine system. The lithologies of the Nakdong Formation of the Gyeongsang Basin have been considered to consist of generally conglomerates and pebbly sandstones that were accumulated in alluvial fans. But the common lithology of the study area is sandstone which was formed in lower part of alluvial fan or fluvial setting. It is supposed that the coarser sedimentary sequence distributed west to the study area should be eroded out after deposition and early uplift, and the finer sandstone sequence in the east remains behind. The mineral composition of sandstones and the clast composition of conglomerates indicate that the Nakdong Formation was derived mainly from the metamorphic source rocks. Some reworked intraclasts were also supplied from the intrabasinal sedimentary layers. Paleocurrent data collected from cross-beddings, ripple marks, asymmetric sand dune suggest that most sediments were transported from north to south during the Nakdong Formation time.
