Effects of chemical compositions and manufacturing conditions on mechanical properties and microstructures were investigated in order to obtain galvannealed high strength dual phase steel sheets with superior mechanical properties and coating properties. An intercritical annealing between Ac1 and Ac3 was conducted to produce the DP (dual phase) steel sheets, followed by quenching to room temperature. The purposes of Al addition are to reduce the iron oxidation with chemical composition (Si, Mn etc.) and to improve the wettability by liquid zinc. The present study will focus on the characterization for making dual phase steel sheets and enhancing the galvanizability of Al added DP steel sheets about continuous annealing line in CGL.
Unlike a printing process, it is difficult to pattern organic thin films in the longitudinal (coating) direction using a coating process. In this paper, we have investigated the feasibility of patterning organic thin films using needles. To this end, we have slot-coated an aqueous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) solution in the form of a fine stripe or large area and then applied the dual needle; one for discharging the main solvent of the underlying thin film and the other for sucking the dissolved thin film. We have found that the pattern width and depth increase as the moving speed of the plate decreases. However, it is observed that the sidewall slope is very gentle (the length of the slope is of the order of 200 ㎛) due to the fact that the discharged main solvent is widely spread and then isotropic etching occurs. With this scheme, we have also demonstrated that a fine stripe can be obtained by scanning the dual needle closely. To demonstrate its applicability to solution-processable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), we have also fabricated OLED with the patterned PEDOT:PSS stripe and observed the insulation property in the strong light-emitting stripe.
In this paper, the sensing characteristics of a double cladding fiber (DCF) long-period fiber grating (LPFG) to the surrounding refractive index (SRI) are studied. The outer cladding of the DCF plays the role of the overlay, thus, the mode transition (MT) phenomenon of DCF can be induced by etching the outer cladding radius instead of coating overlays. The response characteristics of the effective refractive index (ERI) of the cladding mode to the outer cladding radius are analyzed. It is found that in the MT range, the change rate of ERIs of cladding modes is relatively larger than that for other ranges. Further, based on the features of the mode transition region (MTR), the phase-matching curve of the 11th cladding mode is investigated, and the response of the DCF-LPFG to the SRI is characterized by the change of wavelength intervals between the dual peaks under different outer cladding radii. The numerical simulation results show that the SRI sensitivity is greatly improved, which is available to 3484.0 nm/RIU with the fitting degree 0.998 in the SRI range of 1.33-1.37. The proposed DCF-LPFG can provide new theoretical support for designing the DCF-LPFG refractive index sensor with excellent performances of sensitivity, linearity and structure.
We report the fabrication of double clad fiber (DCF) and DCF coupler, suitable for fiber based imaging systems requiring the dual-channel transmission. Unlike the conventional DCF which uses silica for both cladding layers, the proposed DCF uses a low-index polymer for its outer-cladding layer coated over the conventional silica inner-cladding layer. The DCF is drawn with a conventional SMF preform but a low-index polymer coating is used for both jacket and outercladding of the fiber. To achieve the cladding mode coupling, a DCF coupler is fabricated by simply twisting two pieces of the proposed DCF after removing the polymer-coating at contacting regions. A cladding mode coupling ratio of 30% was achieved with a contact length of 16 cm. The proposed DCF and DCF coupler were employed in a composite optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescence spectroscopy (FS) system, and both OCT images and FS signal from a plant tissue are measured simultaneously.
The surface property of the materials used in tissue engineering application has been essential to regulate cellular behaviors by directing their adhesion on the materials. To modulate surface property of the synthetic biodegradable materials, a variety of surface modification techniques have used to introduced surface functional groups or bioactive molecules, recently polydopamine coating method have been introduce as a facile modification method which can be coated on various materials such as polymers, metals, and ceramics regardless of their surface property. However, there are no reports about the degree of polydopamine coating on the materials with different hydrophilicity. In the present study, we prepared acrylic acid grafted nanofibrous meshes using electron-beam irradiation, and then coated meshes with polydopamine. Polydopamine successfully coated on the all meshes, both properties of acrylic acid and polydopamine were detected on the meshes. In addition, the degree of polydopamine deposition on the materials has been altered according to surface hydrophilicity, which was approximately 8-times greater than those on the non-modified materials. In conclusion, dual effect from the acrylic acid grafting and polydopamine may give a chance as a alternative tool in tissue engineering application.
We propose a two-step lithography process to minimize edge-bead issues caused by thick photoresist (PR) coating. In the conventional PR process, the edge bead can be efficiently removed by applying an edge-bead removal (EBR) process while rotating the silicon wafer at a high speed. However, applying conventional EBR to the production of desired PR mold with unique negative patterns cannot be used because a lower rpm of spin coating and a lower temperature in the soft bake process are required. To overcome this problem, a two-step lithography process was developed in this study and applied to the fabrication of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film having super-hydrophobic characteristics. Following UV exposure with a first photomask, the exposed part of the silicon wafer was selectively removed by applying a PR developer while rotating at a low rpm. Then, unique PR mold structures were prepared by employing an additional under-exposure process with a second mask, and the mold patterns were transferred to the PDMS. Results showed that the fabricated PDMS film based on the two-step lithography process reduced the height difference from 23% to 5%. In addition, the water contact angle was greatly improved by spraying of hydrophobic nanosilica on the dual-scaled PDMS surface.
Microalgae produce not only lipids for biodiesel production but also valuable biochemicals which are often accumulated under cellular stress mediated by certain chemicals. While the microcarriers for the application of drug delivery systems for animal cells are widely studied, their applications into microalgal research or biorefinery are rarely investigated. Here we develope dual-functional magnetic microcapsules which work not only as flocculants for microalgal harvesting but also potentially as microcarriers for the controlled release of target chemicals stimulating microalgae to enhance the accumulation of valuable chemicals. Magnetic microcapsules are synthesized by layer-by-layer(LbL) coating of PSS-PDDA on $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticle-embedded $CaCO_3$ microparticles followed by removing $CaCO_3$ sacrificial templates. The positively charged magnetic microcapsules flocculate microalgae by electrostatic interaction which are sequentially collected by the magnetophoretic separation. The microcapsules with a polycationic outer layer provide efficient binding sites for negatively charged microalgae and by that means are further utilized as a chemical-delivery and flocculation system for microalgal research and biorefineries.
The flow properties of binder latices for paper coating were investigated, together with dynamic viscoelastic properties of latex films and electron micrographs of latices, under various conditions. The amphoteric latex, binder pigment latex and anionic latex were used in this work. The amphoteric latex has both anionic and cationic functional group on its surface. The binder-pigment with a core-shell structure has dual functions : plastic pigment and binder. The low shear viscosity of binder latices and clay slurry were measured with Brookfield vis cometer. At low-shear rates. the viscosity decreased with increasing particle size of latex. On the amphoteric latex surface, the carboxyl groups are assumed to be fully dissociated over the region of pH 9~12, but the density of negative groups seems to be increased because of the gradual decrease in the degree of dissociation of amino groups. Since the apparent particle size of latex increases with surface charge, the electroviscous effect can be observed. On the anionic latex surface, the charge density is assumed to be nearly constant above pH 8. However, below pH 8 the coagulation of particles could be observed probably because of the decrease in the charge density.
A technical overview on the various sample preparation methods for electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis is carried out. The mechanical polishing with colloidal silica finish, electro-chemical polishing, dual layer coating and ion beam milling are introduced for the common sample preparation methods for EBSD observation and some issues that are frequently neglected by the common EBSD users but should be considered to get a reliable EBSD data are discussed. This overview would be especially helpful to the people who know what EBSD technique is but do not get a reliable EBSD data because of difficulties in sample preparation.
