  • A microcomputer-based on-line monitoring and controlling system was built and applied to the dehycration operation. Drying conditions-drying temperatures and air velocities-were successfully controlled by the control deveices incorporated on/off realy and thyristor, and with the high language program. Drying variables-temperature in drier and weight loss of radish slice were accurately measured and acquisited. The computer-based drying system effectively saved the man power required to measure and record data during the drying period and also made possible to conduct the process undisturbed for long period. The drying rate curves of radish at various drying conditions were obtained from automatic data analyzing program. And also the computer programmed control made possible to investigate the effect of air velocity change during the drying period. The dynamic change of air velocity of from one to another level could be performed and affected markedly the drying rate at first stages of drying, but no significant effect were found in falling rate period.

  • A microcomputer drying system, which could be designed to be operated easily and economically, was developed. The optimum drying conditions with this system for onion and ginger were obtained. The temperature, relative humidity, and weight of material were measured and controlled successfully, and the better quality of products was obtained. Optimum drying condition for onion was $65^{\circ}C$ and 25% RH, and for ginger was $50^{\circ}C$ and 25%, respectively.

  • In-bin grain drying experiments were performed to investigate the drying characteristics between natural air and solar heated-air drying system of rough rice. A computer simulation model for solar drying system of rough rice resulted in a good agreement between the experimental and predicted moisture content. In order to save the electric energy consumption of fan, airflow rates control system using inverter was developed and resulted in the effect of energy saving.

Drying Characteristics of Oak Mushroom Using Stationary Far-infrared Dryer (정치식 원적외선 건조기를 이용한 표고버섯의 건조특성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the drying characteristics of oak mushroom using stationary far-infrared dryer. Drying characteristics was measured at drying air velocity 0.4 to 0.6 m/s and drying temperature 50, 60, and 70$^{\circ}C$, respectively. With high temperature of far-infrared heater and fast air velocity, the far-infrared drying rate of double air flow system was better than conventional heated-air drying as much as 39%. The value of color difference (E) of oak mushroom before and after drying was 8.95 by using heated air drying and was in the range of 3.76$\sim$6.98 by the far-infrared drying. The shrinkage rate of oak mushroom after heated air drying was higher than that of air velocity, 0.6 m/s of far-infrared drying conditions, and was lower than that of air velocity, 0.4 m/s of far-infrared drying conditions. The content of free amino acid was higher in far-infrared drying than heated air drying.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a computer measurement and control system which enable it possible to manage the natural air rough rice drying and storage properly and safely. The following contents of work were taken in this study in order to fulfill the above goal: 1) Design and construction of measurement system which can measure the rough rice drying conditions automatically and transfer them to computer system for data processing. 2) Development of a management software which can determine the need of fan operation by the analysis of drying and/or storage conditions. 3) Design and construction of a control system which deliver the computer decision of fan operation and make it on and off. 4) Technical and economical analysis of the computer measurement and control system development by the comparison experiments of the computer management and of the manual.

  • A drying speed control system using fuzzy logic was developed in order to minimize the damage of rice quality for a large capacity continuous dryer. The performance of the system was tested at two object moisture content of 17% and 25% on a wet basis. For object moisture content of 17% on a wet basis, the final output moisture contents from 20.46%, 20.96%, 18.98% on a wet basis were 17.99%, 17.6% and 17.23% on a wet basis, respectively. For object moisture content of 25% on a wet basis, the final output moisture contents from 28.85%, 26.95%, 28.11%, 27.8% on a wet basis were 25.24%, 24.9%, 25.23% and 25.09% on a wet basis, respectively.

  • To get the goal of self-supply of food grain, improvement of post-harvest grain operations in rural area is under consideration as an important task of agriculture in Korea. This is study is focused on elimination of losses and deteriorations of grain and reduction of labour requirements and funds for post-harvest grain operations. The purpose of this study are presentation of basic data referring to conventional post-harvest grain operations in rural area and suggestion of improving methods for the operations, and also finding out reasonable operating processes of the operations. The result of this study are follows; 1. Grain drying in-the-filed which is performed before threshing has major factors of grain loss during drying, and so should be restrained as possible. Combine harvesting system is recommended among other king of mechanized harvesting systems for restraining in-the-field drying and securing available labors for drying. 2. It is predicted that mechanical grain drying could be prevalent when combine harvesting is taken place. Recommended grain drier for pre-combine harvesting system and for combine harvesting system is batch-type drier and circulating -type drier, respectively. 3. As existing farm storages for grain have insufficient spaces and offer poor conditions for grain storing , it is greatly needed to build up new storage which store only grains. And it is concluded that storing grain in community common storages in desirable. 4. Power supplying system for milling machinery in local milling plants, that a large capacity prime mover supplies power to 4 to 6 kinds of milling machinery simultaeously, should be converted to a system of several small capacity prime movers supplying power to each machiner y for the purpose of reducing extra consumption of energy. 5. Governmental grain, of which Korean farms produced, should be milled and stored in the local milling plant successively for the purpose of reducing transportation fee and stroing facilities. 6. Furture post-havest grain operations-drying, storing and milling should be periormed successively in he community common plant. And average optimum processing capacity of the plant is estimated about 300 metric ton of grain every year.

  • Air drying is a technology to dry sludge at the ejector and multi cyclone as intaking and blowing air from outside. So, this technology has a weak point that operating fluctuation is large according to an outside conditions as well as energy consumption is also large due to open loop structure. This is to develop the closed-loop air drying system to be built the dehumidifier consisted of condenser, cooler and compressor at rear side of separator of air dryer, as a way to solve some problem. Air is circulation by the method of blowing-drying-dehumidifying-blowing within this system. It is analyzed that an air circulated at closed-loop air drying equipment contains the energy of 50% more compared with open-loop air drying and is operated regularly because of quality maintenance of air to dry sludge. And also it is analyzed that the cost of drying sludge of 1 ton by closed-loop air drying equipment is lower about 35% than conventional equipment. Therefore, this is evaluated by useful drying technology to face an unexpected climatic conditions due to regular operation as well as low energy consumption.

  • The simulation of a heat pump dryer has been carried out to figure out the effect of air flow rate on the drying performance represented by MER, SMER, and so on. The simulation includes the analyses of one-stage heat pump cycle and simple drying process using the drying efficiency. The heat pump cycle with Refrigerant 134a has been considered. In the dryer, some of drying air from the drying chamber flows through the heat pump system, the rest of air bypasses the heat pump system. The two air flows joins before the drying chamber inlet. The performance parameters considered in the present study are MER, SMER, the temperature and humidity of drying air. Those parameters are compared for different total air flow rate or bypass air flow rate.

  • As one of the application of microcomputer for data acquisition and temperature control of food drying process, these studies designed and built 'the interface system, measuring sensors of weight and temperature, temperature control system'. The basic and assembly language was used to operating these system. These system measured successfully the variables such as weight and temperature during food drying, and controlled Automatically the drying temperature.
