This study was performed to examine use of the pump-and-treat method for remediation of TCE, CF and CT in groundwater contaminated by DNAPL. The Woosan industrial complex is located in Wonju, about 120 km east of Seoul, Korea. Two pumping wells (KDPW7 and KDPW8) and five monitoring wells (KDMW7, KDMW8, KDMW9, KDMW10, and SKW2) were installed for the test. An asphalt laboratory is a main source of the extensive subsurface contamination at this site. To evaluate change in the concentrations of TCE, CF, and CT in groundwater in the study area, three rounds of pump-and-treat pilot tests were performed (6 July to 6 August, 22 August to 6 September, and 19 September to 2 December in 2011). The groundwater levels and the concentrations of TCE, CF, and CT exhibited negative correlations in the wet season but positive correlations in the dry season, which suggests that the TCE concentrations were mainly controlled by dilution through rainfall during the wet season and by residual TCE, CF, and CT in the unsaturated zone during the dry season. These possibilities should be considered in the full-scale remediation plan.
In this study we conducted a weekly monitoring exercise at a fixed station in the saltwater zone during the dry season (Jan-Mar, 2013) and wet season (Jun-Aug, 2013) to understand the fluctuations in phytoplankton communities and environmental factors in the Youngsan River estuary altered by a dike constructed in the coastal area. Phytoplankton communities displayed seasonality; diatoms were dominant during the dry season whereas dinoflagellates were dominant during the wet season. T-test analysis showed that water temperature was significantly different between the seasons whereas freshwater discharge from the dike was not significantly different. This suggests that seasonal variations of phytoplankton are more likely affected by water temperature than freshwater discharge. However, a short-term fluctuation was also observed in response to freshwater discharge; freshwater species appeared during or after the discharge in the dry and wet seasons and blooms of harmful species developed after the discharge. Phytoplankton communities may be affected by changes in physical factors such as turbidity and salinity and nutrient supply resulting from freshwater discharge. Especially, the nutrient supply may directly contribute to the harmful algal blooms (HABs) composed of dinoflagellates which can adapt to low salinity after freshwater discharge.
In aqueous ecosystems, the level of toxicity is highly responsive dependant to multiple variables, including rainfall, sunlight, pH, adhesion, etc. Because Korea has particularly distinct wet and dry seasons, the toxicity of pollutants in rivers or streams is dependant on the sampling season and time. In order to examine the effects of rainfall on toxicity, sediment samples were collected from five sites along the Keumho river. It was found that Microtox toxicity levels were generally higher during the dry season than the wet season. It indicated that river pollutants are carried off more quickly by the water during the wet season. As a result, it was recommended that the point sources of pollutants of the Keumho river would be placed between KH3 (Paldalgyo) and KH4(Keumhogyo), KH4(Keumhogyo) and KH5(Dasa).
Soil nailing method is widely used in reinforcing slopes and excavating earth. The analysis of nail-reinforced slopes, in order to determine the economical length ratio and nail angle, complicated analytical need to be applied by means of computer programs. Therefor this suggested Soil stability Chart for nailed slopes which may be very useful for pre-design, rapidly design, and final check. Three slope types, three nail length and three nail angles are selected for the stability analysis by using limit equilibrium method of Bishop and French Method. From the above results, this study propose the slope reinforced design charts for dry season and rainy season. This proposed reinforced design charts can check dry season as well as rainy season, also these charts can provide reinforcing requirement, soil nail's economical length ratio and nail angle as well.
BACKGROUND: Gohyeon Stream is the municipal eco-stream of 7.1km in total length which flows through the downtown area of Gohyeon in Geoje city, rising from the watershed of Mundong Water Fall. Gohyeon district in Geoje city has been a rapid growing area centering in Geoje city and then experienced an rapid increase in population. Large amounts of sewage pollutants have been spewed into Gohyeon Stream from its tributaries, due to the lack of sewer system. Gohyeon Stream is laced with unhealthy levels of fecal coliform (FC). Restoration of water quality in Gohyeon Stream is no less inevitable in behalf of its ecosystem and the citizen. In this study, the water quality of Gohyeon Stream and its tributaries was examined temporally and spatially, and their relationships were comparatively analyzed to give useful basic data applying to a restoration project of the water quality of Gohyeon Stream. METHODS AND RESULTS: The samples ware taken at 20 points in Gohyeon Stream and 19 points in its tributaries during the rainy and dry seasons, respectively, and examined on the parameters of pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), suspended solid (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN; $NH_3$-N, $NO_3$-N, $NO_2$-N), disolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP; $PO_4$-P) and FC. The data were analyzed using a comparative analysis and Pearson's correlation analysis among the parameters. During the rainy season, the concentration of SS was high in the upper region of Gohyeon Stream, and the concentrations of COD, DIN and DIP were low in the upper region and high in the middle and lower regions. During the dry season, the concentration of SS was low and the concentrations of COD, DIN, DIP and FC were high in all regions. The Pearson's correlation analyses showed that the relationships between DO and FC, COD and DIP, and DIN and FC during the rainy season as well as between DO and DIN, SS and FC, COD and DIP, and DIN and DIP during the dry season were significant. CONCLUSION: During the rainy season, the upper region of Gohyeon Stream flowed the high level of SS, the middle region the high level of nutrients due to an agricultural run-off, and the lower region the high level of nutrients due to a sewage inflow. During the dry season, the water quality of Gohyeon Stream was directly and sensitively influenced on the inflow of sewage from the tributaries.
In general precise estimation of hourly of daily distribution of the long-term run-off should be very important in a design of source of irrigation. However, there have not been a satisfying method for forecasting of stationar'y long-term run-off in Korea. Solving this problem, this study introduces unit-hydrograph method frequently used in short-term run-off analysis into the long-term run-off analysis, of which model basin was selected to be Sumgin-river catchment area. In the estimation of effective rainfall, conventional method neglects the Soil moisture condition of catchment area, but in this study, the initial discharge (qb) occurred just before rising phase of the hydrograph was selected as the index of a basin soil moisture condition and then introduced as 3rd variable in the analysis of the reationship between cumulative rainfall and cumulative loss of rainfall, which built a new type of separation method of effective rainfall. In next step, in order to normalize significant potential error included in hydrological data, especially in vast catchment area, Snyder's correlation method was applied. A key to solution in this study is multiple correlation method or multiple regressional analysis, which is primarily based on the method of least squres and which is solved by the form of systems of linear equations. And for verification of the change of characteristics of unit hydrograph according to the variation of a various kind of hydrological charateristics (for example, precipitation, tree cover, soil condition, etc),seasonal unit hydrograph models of dry season(autumn, winter), semi-dry season (spring), rainy season (summer) were made respectively. The results obtained in this study were summarized as follows; 1.During the test period of 1966-1971, effective rainfall was estimated for the total 114 run-off hydrograph. From this estimation results, relative error of estimation to the ovservation value was 6%, -which is mush smaller than 12% of the error of conventional method. 2.During the test period, daily distribution of long-term run-off discharge was estimated by the unit hydrograph model. From this estimation results, relative error of estimation by the application of standard unit hydrograph model was 12%. When estimating by each seasonal unit bydrograph model, the relative error was 14% during dry season 10% during semi-dry season and 7% during rainy season, which is much smaller than 37% of conventional method. Summing up the analysis results obtained above, it is convinced that qb-index method of this study for the estimation of effective rainfall be preciser than any other method developed before. Because even recently no method has been developed for the estimation of daily distribution of long-term run-off dicharge, therefore estimation value by unit hydrograph model was only compared with that due to kaziyama method which estimates monthly run-off discharge. However this method due to this study turns out to have high accuracy. If specially mentioned from the results of this study, there is no need to use each seasonal unit hydrograph model separately except the case of semi-dry season. The author hopes to analyze the latter case in future sudies.
The aim of this study was to examine chemical and isotopic compositions of groundwater and lake water near an area contaminated by petroleum and to evaluate influence of petroleum on them during the period from March to August 2011. In dry season, $Ca^{2+}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ were dominant in the groundwater and lake water and $Ca^{2+}$ and $HCO{_3}^-$ were significant in wet season. ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$ of the groundwater and lake water were plotted near LMWL (${\delta}D=8.06{\delta}^{18}O+12.5$). ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$ of the lake water did not show seasonal variation. However, ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$ of the groundwater were enriched in wet season compared with those in dry season because of influence of small ponds around wells where evaporation losses were slightly experienced. Redox condition of most lake water was oxidation environment in contact with the atmosphere during the study period. However, redox condition of groundwater was transitional environment in dry season and oxidation environment in wet season because of influence of contaminant such as petroleum. In some groundwater, the concentrations of $NO{_3}^-$ in some groundwater were less than 1 mg/L because of denitrification. Also, $NO{_3}^-$ showed positive correlation with $SO{_4}^{2-}$ and weak negative correlation with $HCO{_3}^-$, because of influence of denitrification.
In this study, monthly average values of BOD, COD, and TOC observed for 10 years (2008-2017) in the Nam River were estimated, and monthly variations of BOD, COD, and TOC were analyzed. Monthly average COD was always higher than monthly average BOD; monthly average TOC was high from June to September when rainfall was high. Monthly correlation coefficients between BOD and COD ranged from 0.57 to 0.94, those between BOD and TOC from 0.45 to 0.93, and those between COD and TOC from 0.75 to 0.93. The correlation coefficients were high from November to February when rainfall was low. Regression analyses for monthly average water quality data of the Nam River classified into dry season (October to April) and wet season (May to September) were conducted. Correlation coefficients were higher in the dry season than those in the wet season, and the determination coefficients of linear regression functions for BOD and COD with TOC were also higher in the dry season than those in the wet season. From this study, it can be concluded that it is appropriate to use monthly data to analyze the correlations among BOD, COD, and TOC in the stream. To analyze the relationship between TOC flowing into the stream and BOD/COD, it was found that seasonal characteristics should be considered.
The zone of greenhouse in Korea increase on a scale yearly. Particularly, greenhouse take up a important value on the agriculture economy. Greenhouse of scale, material, heating system, and drain is progressing to industrialization. The dry bulb temperature, humidity, photosynthesis and so forth are necessary to maintain environment control of greenhouse. The dry bulb temperature among them greatly affects growing of a plant. The purpose of this study is to analyzed the indoor environment control system and the characteristic of dry bulb temperature distribution on a large scale greenhouse in summer season.
