A HIERARCHICAL APPROACH TO HIGH-RESOLUTION HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGE CLASSIFICATION OF LITTLE MIAMI RIVER WATERSHED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MODELING

  • Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) hyperspectral imagery was acquired over the Little Miami River Watershed (1756 square miles) in Ohio, U.S.A., which is one of the largest hyperspectral image acquisition. For the development of a 4m-resolution land cover dataset, a hierarchical approach was employed using two different classification algorithms: 'Image Object Segmentation' for level-1 and 'Spectral Angle Mapper' for level-2. This classification scheme was developed to overcome the spectral inseparability of urban and rural features and to deal with radiometric distortions due to cross-track illumination. The land cover class members were lentic, lotic, forest, corn, soybean, wheat, dry herbaceous, grass, urban barren, rural barren, urban/built, and unclassified. The final phase of processing was completed after an extensive Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) phase. With respect to the eleven land cover class members, the overall accuracy with a total of 902 reference points was 83.9% at 4m resolution. The dataset is available for public research, and applications of this product will represent an improvement over more commonly utilized data of coarser spatial resolution such as National Land Cover Data (NLCD).

섬진강 유역 농촌지역의 비점오염원 배출특성에 관한 연구 (Study on Runoff Characteristics of Non-point Source in Rural Area of Seomjin Watershed)

  • The present study investigated runoff characteristics of non-point pollutants and discharge load amount according to the land utilization in Yeinam river basin. The land utilization of target basin was divided into paddy field, dry field, forest, residential area and composition area. The study on the runoff characteristics of non-point pollutants by rainfall-runoff process showed that COD, SS and T-P had the first-flushing effect with relatively high concentration in early-stage of the rainfall-runoff process, but the T-P revealed similar runoff characteristics. Event Mean Concentration(EMC) of BOD and COD according to the land utilization revealed the range of $3.11\~15.50mg/L$ and $3.37\~33.42mg/L$, and the highest concentration of EMC corresponding to BOD and COD was detected in the paddy field. The EMC of SS showed $1.7\~305.02mg/L$ and it's highest concentration was found in the dry field. The EMC of T-N and T-P represented the highest concentration in the paddy field and dry field with range of $0.91\~8.76mg/L$ and $0.02\~0.44mg/L$.

Acacia Dominated Area Exclosures Enhance the Carbon Sequestration Potential of Degraded Dryland Forest Ecosystems

  • Area exclosure is a widely practiced intervention of restoring degraded lands though its impact in sequestering terrestrial and soil carbon is scanty. The study was initiated to investigate the effect of exclosure of different ages on carbon sequestration potential of restoring degraded dryland ecosystems in eastern Tigray, northern Ethiopia. Twelve plots each divided into three layers were randomly selected from 5, 10 and 15 years old exclosures and paired adjacent open grazing land. Tree and shrub biomasses were determined using destructive sampling while herb layer biomass was determined using total harvest. The average total biomass obtained were 13.6, 24.8, 27.1, and 55.5 Mg ha-1 for open grazing, 5 years, 10 years, and 15 years exclosures respectively. The carbon content of plant species ranged between 48 to 53 percent of a dry biomass. The total carbon stored in the 5 years, 10 years and 15 years age exclosures were 39 Mg C ha-1, 46.3 Mg C ha-1, and 64.6 Mg C ha-1 respectively while in the open grazing land the value was 24.7 Mg C ha-1. Carbon stock is age dependent and increases with age. The difference in total carbon content between exclosures and open grazing land varied between 14.3-40 Mg C ha-1. Although it is difficult to extrapolate this result for a longer future, the average annual carbon being sequestered in the oldest exclosure was about 2.7 Mg C ha-1 yr-1. In view of improving degraded area and sequestering carbon, area exclosures are promising options.

인천시에서 토지이용이 도시 열 환경에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Land Use on Urban Thermal Environments in Incheon, Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 도시 토지이용과 열 환경의 관계를 파악하기 위하여, 인천시에서 토지이용이 다른 곳에서 기온을 측정하였고, 지난 40년간 토지이용과 기온의 변화를 파악하였으며, 위성영상 자료를 이용하여 토지이용과 온도의 관계에 대하여 연구하였다. 2014년 8월 19일부터 21일까지 산림지, 경작지 (논), 나지 (운동장), 시가화지 (아스팔트 도로)에서 온도를 측정한 결과에서 시가화지역이 가장 기온이 높았고 산림지가 가장 낮았다. 인천시에서 1975년부터 2014년까지 40년간 기온은 약 $1.4^{\circ}C$ ($0.035^{\circ}C$/년)이 상승하였다. 지난 40년간 인천시의 토지이용 유형에서 시가화건조지, 나지, 초지가 증가하였고 경작지, 습지, 산림지가 감소하였다. Landsat 위성영상을 이용하여 추출한 지표면 온도 (LST)와 정규식생지수 (NDVI), 정규시가지화지수 (NDBI) 간에 상관관계를 보였다. 지표면 온도는 NDVI가 높은 곳에서 지면온도가 낮았고, NDBI가 높은 곳에서 지면 온도가 높았다. 따라서 도시의 열섬효과를 완화하고 열 환경을 개선하기 위해서는 녹지, 습지, 농경지의 토지이용을 보전하고 복원하는 것이 중요하다고 판단된다.

금호강 유역관리를 위한 수변구역의 토지이용패턴분석 (An Analysis of Land Use Patterns in Riparian Zones for the Geumho River Watershed Management)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 금호강 유역을 대상으로 수변구역의 토지이용패턴과 하천 수질간의 관계를 규명하는 것이다. GIS 자료는 수치토지이용도(1:25,000), 수치지형도(1:5,000)에서 추출된 하천망도, 그리고 다중버퍼링 기법에 의한 수변구역도로 구성되었다. Pearson의 상관분석은 하천 양안 30m 수변구역의 토지이용패턴과 수질간의 관계를 설명하기 위해서 사용하였다. 수변구역의 토지이용패턴을 분석한 결과에 따르면, 대구광역시가 위치하고 있는 금호강 하류의 소유역들은 대부분이 주거, 상업, 공업의 도시지역으로 개발된 반면, 금호강 중류와 낙동강 본류에 분포하는 소유역들은 논, 밭 그리고 과수원 등의 농업지역으로 주로 이용되었다. 유역에서 발생되는 질소, 인, 퇴적물 등의 여과기능을 담당할 수 있는 산림지역의 면적률은 16% 정도에 불과한 것으로 나타났다. 수변구역의 토지이용패턴과 하천 수질지표간의 상관분석결과에 따르면, 수변구역의 도시면적률은 하천 수질과 음(-)의 관계를 가지며, 산림지역 면적률은 양(+)의 상관관계를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 향후에는 지가 등의 경제적인 측면을 비롯한 현재의 토지이용패턴, 그리고 하천 제방의 특성, 지형, 토양 등의 물리적 인자를 종합적으로 고려한 조사 및 연구와 이를 바탕으로 한 종합적인 수변구역 정비 및 관리계획이 수립되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.

Woody Plant Species Composition, Population Structure and Carbon Sequestration Potential of the A. senegal (L.) Willd Woodland Along a Distance Gradient in North-Western Tigray, Ethiopia

  • In Ethiopia, dry land vegetation including the fairly intact lowland and western escarpment woodlands occupy the largest vegetation resource of the country. These forests play a central role in environmental regulation and socio-economic assets, yet they received less scientific attention than the moist forests. This study evaluated the woody plant species composition, population structure and carbon sequestration potential of the A. senegal woodland across three distance gradients from the settlements. A total of 45 sample quadrants were laid along a systematically established nine parallel transect lines to collect vegetation and soil data across distance gradients from settlement. Mature tree dry biomass with DBH>2.5 cm was estimated using allometric equations. A total of 41 woody plant species that belong to 20 families were recorded and A. senegal was the dominant species with 56.4 IVI value. Woody plant species diversity, density and richness were significantly higher in the distant plots compared to the nearest plots to settlement (p<0.05). The cumulative DBH class distribution of all individuals had showed an interrupted inverted J-shape population pattern. There were 19 species without seedlings, 15 species without saplings and 14 species without both seedlings and saplings. A significant above ground carbon (5.3 to 12.7 ton ha-1), root carbon (1.6 to 3.6 ton ha-1), soil organic carbon (35.6 to 44.5 ton ha-1), total carbon stock (42.5 to 60.7 ton ha-1) and total carbon dioxide equivalent (157.7 to 222.8 ton ha-1) was observed consistently with an increasing of distance from settlement (p<0.05). Distance from settlement had significant and positive correlation with species diversity and carbon stock at 0.64⁎⁎ and 0.78⁎⁎. Disturbance intensity may directly influence the variation of species composition, richness and density along the A. senegal woodland. The sustainability of the A. senegal woodland needs urgent protection, conservation and restoration.

정밀수치정보를 이용한 도시중심에서 거리별 농지손실 및 도시화과정의 토지전용 특성 분석 - 일본의 대표적 도시주변지역을 중심으로 - (Analysis of Land Conversion Characteristics in Process of Farmland Loss and Urbanization by Distance from Center of City Using Detailed Digital Land Use - With Representative Big Cities and Their Fringe Areas in Japan -)

  • As a pre-step research to make land-use planning in the region level, this study aims to analyze some probability pattern representing transition probabilities from farmland to others using the sequential detailed digital land-use maps. Kinki and Chubu regions of Japan, which have Osaka and Nagoya cities as their center places respectively, were selected as test regions in this study. The 10m grid land-use maps for four time series at every 5 year from 1977 to 1992 were used. In this study, the regions were divided into three sub-areas 10km, 20km, and 30km according to distance from center cities, respectively. The correlation coefficient (CC) between sub-areas with same distance in the two regions was calculated to analyze whether or not the two regions have common points in the pattern of land-use conversion probability from farmland to other types. The probability distribution of the converted areas which were moved to the urbanized area (residential, commercial, industrial, road, park and public facility areas) was about $40{\sim}70%$ for both all periods and sub-areas. According to distance from city centers, the probability moved to the urbanized area was about 60% at 10km area, and 40% at the 30km area, which means that the values we decreased gradually, while in the case moved to the forest and the etc areas, the values were increased slightly. The CC analysis from the paddy field and the dry field to the others separately showed that there is high correlation in the probability pattern between the two regions.

Landsat 위성영상을 이용한 몽골 Tuul-Basin 지역의 토지피복변화 및 지표온도 시계열적 분석 (Time series Analysis of Land Cover Change and Surface Temperature in Tuul-Basin, Mongolia Using Landsat Satellite Image)

  • 본 연구는 몽골 Tuul-basin 지역의 토지피복변화 상태와 토지황폐화에 대한 분석을 위해 1990, 2001, 2011년의 녹색식물의 활력도가 가장 높은 여름의 Landsat 위성영상을 활용하였다. 몽골 Tuul-Basin 지역의 시계열 데이터를 이용하여, 정규식생지수(NDVI, normalized difference vegetation index), 토양조절 식생지수(SAVI, soil-adjusted vegetation index), 지표면온도(LST, land surface temperature)를 계산하여 토지피복변화 분석을 하였다. 그 결과 연구지역 전체 지역의 산림 및 녹지는 감소되고, 건조지역, 휴경지는 증가된 것으로 나타났으며, 점진적으로 토지가 황폐화되어 감을 알 수 있었다. 또한 LST와 식생지수의 상관성 분석을 실시한 결과, 높은 상관관계를 나타내었으며, 이는 대상지역의 토지피복변화나 식생의 활력도가 지표면의 온도와 밀접하게 관계가 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

황폐지(荒廢地) 토양수분(土壤水分)이 묘목(苗木)의 생장(生長) 및 양분흡수(養分吸水)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Soil Moisture Influence on Growth and Nutrient Uptake of Seedlings in Denuded Forest Land)

  • 황폐임지(荒廢林地)의 녹화(綠化)에 있어서 그 토양조건(土壤條件)은 지피식생(地被植生)의 초기생육(初期生育)에 지대(至大)한 영향(影響)을 미친다. 황폐지(荒廢地) 토양(土壤)의 수분조건(水分條件)과 인산시비수준(燐酸施肥水準)이 묘목(苗木)의 생장(生長)과 양분흡수(養分吸收)에 미치는 효과(効果)를 알기 위하여 본(本) 시험(試驗)이 실시(實施)되었다. 화강암질(花崗岩質) 토양(土壤)을 채취운반(採取運搬)하여 리기다소나무, 아까시나무 및 싸리를 공시수종(供試樹種)으로 식재(植栽)하였다. 처리수준(處理水準)은 수분처리(水分處理)가 3수준(水準), 인산시비(燐酸施肥)가 4수준(水準)으로 하였으며 각각(各各) 4반복(反復)을 두었다. 시험(試驗) 결과(結果) 생장(生長)은 건중량(乾重量)의 변화(變化)로 고찰(考察)하였고 양분흡수(養分吸收)는 질소(窒素) 인산(燐酸) 가리(加里)에 대(對)하여만 분석(分析) 조사(調査)하였다. 이상과 같이 실시(實施)한 시험(試驗) 결과(結果) 다음과 같은 결론(結論)을 얻었다. 1. 리기다소나무 묘목(苗木)에 있어서 토양수분함량(土壤水分含量)의 증가(增加)는 생장량(生長量)을 증가(增加)시키고 가리(加里)의 흡수(吸收)를 촉진(促進)시키며, 인산시비수준(燐酸施肥水準)의 증가(增加)는 인산흡수(燐酸吸收)에 영향(影響)을 주지 못하며 오히려 가리(加里)의 흡수(吸收)를 감소(減少)시킨다. 2. 아까시나무에 있어서 토양수분함량(土壤水分含量)의 증가(增加)는 식물체내(植物體內) 질소(窒素)와 가리(加里)의 흡수(吸收)를 증가(增加)시키며 인산시비수준(燐酸施肥水準)의 증가(增加)는 인산흡수(燐酸吸收)를 촉진(促進)시킬뿐 아니라 생장량(生長量)을 크게 증가(增加)시킨다. 3. 싸리에 있어서 토양수분함량(土壤水分含量)의 증가(增加)는 질소(窒素)의 흡수(吸收)를 감소(減少)시키는 경향(傾向)이 있으며, 인산시비수준(燐酸施肥水準)의 증가(增加)는 인산흡수(燐酸吸收)를 촉진(促進)시키며 동시(同時)에 생장량(生長量)을 증가(增加)시킨다.

황폐임야(荒廢林野)가 수해참상(水害慘狀)에 미치는 영향(影響) (천보산(天寶山)과 인접(隣接) 죽엽산(竹葉山)을 중심(中心)으로) (Influences of the devastated forest lands on flood damages (Observed at Chonbo and the neighbouring Mt. Jook-yop area))

  • 1. On 13 September 1964 a storm raged for 3 hours and 20 minutes with pounding heavy rainfalls, and precipitation of 287.5 mm was recorded on that day. The numerous landslides were occured in the eroded forest land neighbouring Mt. Chunbo, while no landslides recorde at all on Mt. Jookyup within the premise of Kwangnung Experiment Station, the Forest Experiment Station. 2. Small-scalled Landslides were occured in 43 different places of watershed area (21.97 ha.) in which the survey had already been done, in and around Mt. Chunbo (378 m a.s.l.). The accumulated soil amount totaled $2,146,56m^3$ due to the above mentioned landslides, while soil accumulated from riverside erosion has reached to $24,168.79m^3$, consisting of soils, stones, and pebbles. However, no landslides were reported in the Mt. Jook yup area because of dense forest covers. The ratio of the eroded soil amount accumulated from the riversides to that of watershed area was 1 to 25. On the other hand, the loss and damage in the research area of Mt. Chonbo are as follows: 28 houses completly destroyed or missing 7 houses partially destroyed 51 men were dead 5 missing, and 57 wounded. It was a terrible human disaster However, no human casualties were recorded at all, 1 house-completly destroyed and missing, 2 houses-partially destroyed. Total:3 houses were destroyed or damaged, in The area of Mt. Jookyup 3. In the calculation of the quanty of accumulated soil, the or mula of "V=1/3h ($a+{\sqrt{ab}}+b$)" was used and it showed that 24, 168.79m of soil, sands, stones and pebbles carried away. 4. Average slope of the stream stood 15 at the time of accident and well found that there was a correlation between the 87% of cross-area sufferd valley erosion and the length of eroded valley, after a study on regression and correlation of the length and cross-area. In other works, the soil erosion was and severe as we approached to the down-stream, counting at a place of average ($15^{\circ}1^{\prime}$) and below. We might draw a correlation such as "Y=ax-b" in terms of the length and cross-area of the eroded valley. 5. Sites of char-coal pits were found in the upper part of the desert-like Mt. Chunbo and a professional opinion shows that the mountain was once covered by the oak three species. Furthermore, we found that the soil of both mountains have been kept the same soil system according to a research of the soil cross-area. In other words, we can draw out the fact that, originally, the forest type and soil type of both Mt. Chunbo (378m) and Mt. Jookyup (610m) have been and are the same. However, Mt. Chunbo has been much more devastated than Mt. Jookyup, and carried away its soil nutrition to the extent that the ratios of N. $P_2O_5K_2O$ and Humus C.E.C between these two mountains are 1:10;1:5 respectively. 6. Mt. Chunbo has been mostly eroded for the past 30 years, and it consists of gravels of 2mm or larger size in the upper part of the mountain, while in the lower foot part, the sandy loam was formulated due to the fact that the gluey soil has been carried and accumulated. On the hand, Mt. Jookyup has consitantly kept the all the same forest type and sandy loam of brown colour both in the upper and lower parts. 7. As for the capability of absorbing and saturating maximum humidity by the surface soil, the ratios of wet soil to dry soil are 42.8% in the hill side and lower part of the eroded Mt. Chunbo and 28.5% in the upper part. On the contrary, Mt. Jookyup on which the forest type has not been changed, shows that the ratio in 77.4% in the hill-side and 68.2% in the upper part, approximately twice as much humidity as Mt. Chunbo. This proves the fact that the forest lands with dense forest covers are much more capable of maintaining water by wood, vegitation, and an organic material. The strength of dreventing from carring away surface soil is great due to the vigorous network of the root systems. 8. As mentioned above, the devastated forest land cause not only much greater devastation, but also human loss and property damage. We must bear in mind that the eroded forest land has taken the valuable soil, which is the very existance of origin of both human being and all creatures. As for the prescription for preventing erosion of forest land, the trees for furtilization has to be planted in the hill,side with at least reasonable amount of aertilizer, in order to restore the strength of earth soil, while in the lower part, thorough erosion control and reforestation, and establishments along the riversides have to be made, so as to restore the forest type.
