Feasibility of Tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L.) for Phytoremediation of Soil Contaminated with Zn and Cu (Zn 및 Cu 오염토양에서 담배에 의한 복원 탐색)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Zn and Cu on physiological responses of tobacco at the different leaf ages for the purpose of phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated field. Plant height was significantly decreased at Zn and Cu concentrations of 1.0 mM or higher. Especially, root dry weight decreased more (50% reduced) than shoot dry weight. Zn and Cu accumulation in the shoot and root was dramatically increased after 2.0 mM treatment. The accumulation pattern was different by leaf aging in that Zn accumulated more in senescence leaf and Cu accumulated more in growing leaf. The amounts of heavy metal accumulations per plant were 146,000 mg/kg for Zn and 20,500 mg/kg for Cu at 2.0 mM treatment. The proper harvesting time would be suggested as vegetative growth stage for Zn and reproductive stage for Cu. The concentrations of other inorganic ions (Mg, Mn, Fe) were decreased when Zn and Cu concentrations were increased. Cu concentration and Zn concentration of both shoot and root were decreased in Zn treatment and Cu treatment, respectively.

  • In oriental medicine, the skin of the face and the body is the mirror of the viscera and bowels. Skin aging is measured according to the elasticity and glossiness of the skin, which is perceived as a matter of fluid-humor within the realms of oriental medicine. Fluid-humor refers to normal body fluid that makes the skin moist and supple and the hair bright and glossy. If the body is lacking fluid-humor, the hair and skin will be dry and coarse. 'The improvement of fluid-humor (nutrition)' is facilitated based on the oriental physiological change theory for middle-aged women. A new study is therefore necessary to develop oriental herbal cosmetics for young women in their 20s. As yet, there has been no study on the effect of herbal cosmetics formulated for middle-aged women and used by young women in their 20s. This study aims to investigate the effect of 'the improvement of fluid-humor' for the skin of young women in their 20s within the theory of oriental medicine. This kind of study is essential for oriental skin care and the development of diverse oriental herbal cosmetics. To determine the effect of oriental herbal cosmetics on young women in their 20s based on the theory of oriental medicine, which says that a shortage of fluid-humor causes skin aging, this study has examined the skin conditions of young women in their 20s and how satisfied they are with oriental herbal cosmetics through an objective equipment-based measurement and subjective questionnaire survey.

Effect of Neonicochid Type Wood Preservative on Adhesive Properties of Resorcinol Resin for Lminated Wood (네오니코치드계 목재보존제가 집성재 제조용 레조르시놀 수지의 접착력에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of neonicochid type wood preservatives on adhesive properties of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin for laminated wood manufacture was examined. By the previous studies, it was verified that the neonicochid type preservative has a high termite-proofing and anti-mold effectiveness. Commercial ACQ (ammoniacal copper quaternary compounds) and CUAZ (copper azol compounds) were used as comparison preservatives of effects on adhesive properties. The wood specimens used japanese red pine (Pinus densifrora) after application with preservatives and then bonded with resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. Adhesive properties were evaluated by shearing strength of adhesive bond and wood failure to dry condition or after accelerated aging test. Of all laminated woods, the wood specimens spread with ACQ or CUAZ showed the lowest shearing strength of adhesive bond. We estimated that the decrease of shearing strength was caused by copper in the ACQ or CUAZ preservatives. On the application of the neonicochid type preservatives, the wood specimens showed the highest shearing strength even after accelerated aging test. From these results, it is concluded that the copper-free neonicochid type preservative not affected the curing of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin.

  • The cosmetic effects of epicutaneous treatment with extracts of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer have been poorly investigated. The little published data found in cosmetic literature emphasize the activating effects on sagging and wrinkled skin and some favorable activities on dry and/or greasy skin. Earlier observations have shown the excellent skin tolerability of some liposomal ginseng extract preparations. No moisturizing and seboregulatory effects were demonstrated. but eutrophic effects on subjects with aging skin have been observed. The present study concerned the preparation of a special extract derivative obtained by Physical-chemical interactions of ginseng saponins and some phospholipids. which we have called 'fitosoma.' These complexes have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Furthermore, these complexes are new. stable. and water microdispersible, forming liposomal structures in water. The cosmetic activities of these compounds have been examined by means of corneometry and elastometry to study their influence on aging skin. on skin layer hydration. and to determine skin elasticity.

Investigation of Strength Characteristics of Ferrous Slag and Waste Concrete in Water Contacting Environment by Exposure to Raining Events

  • Ferrous slag is a by-product from steel making process and waste concrete is generated from construction activities. Large part of ferrous slag and waste concrete are recycled as construction materials. However, Ca2+ leaching out of ferrous slag and waste concrete in the water-contacting environment can cause a strength change. Strength can be reduced due to the dissolution of solid form of CaO which is one of the main contents of ferrous slag and waste concrete. On the other hand, strength can be enhanced due to the pozzolanic reaction of cementitious components with water. In this study, steelmaking slag, blast furnace slag, and waste concrete were aged by exposure to raining events, and the change of their compaction and shear strength characteristics was investigated. Optimum moisture content of all materials used in this study increased with aging period while maximum dry unit weight slightly decreased, implying that the relative contents of fine particles increased as the CaO solid particles were dissolved. Internal friction angle and shear strength of recycled materials also increased with aging period, indicating that the materials became denser by the decrease of void ratio attributed to the fine particles generated during the weathering process and the development of cementitious compounds increasing the bonding and interlocking forces between the particles. The results of this study demonstrated that mechanical strength of recycled materials used as construction materials has little chance to be deteriorated during their service life.

Analysis of Oral Pathogenic Microorganisms by Elderly's Systemic and Oral Health Status of the Elderly Over 65 Years

  • Korean society is experiencing rapid growth due to industrialization and urbanization, and the aging of population is emerging. Degradation of the masticatory muscle due to aging and reduction of the number of mastications causes dry mouth syndrome with decreased saliva in the elderly. Changes in the amount and composition of saliva cause various oral diseases, especially, periodontal disease is closely related to the microorganisms that form the plaque. In the elderly education, stimulation saliva was collected at the first visit and the last visit to observe changes in microorganisms in the oral cavity. For the collection of the probes, the paraffin wax was chewed for 5 minutes. The samples were immediately refrigerated in a 50 cc plastic tube and then stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ until the next use. The subjects of this study were the elderly people aged 65 years or older, and the study was conducted on 16 persons, 3 males and 13 females. The distribution of saliva microorganisms according to rolling brushing method showed significant difference in all three groups (Aa & Red complex, Orange complex and Green complex) before and after the education. In the group who answered that they had dentures, it was confirmed that the amount of microorganisms before and after education was significantly reduced in all three groups. There was a significant decrease in the amount of microorganisms in the Aa & Red complex and Orange complex group in the case of hypertension related to systemic disease. In conclusion, the higher the interest of oral health and general health of the subjects, the more effective the education.

Effect of Dry Powders, Ethanol Extracts and Juices of Radish and Onion on Lipid Metabolism and Antioxidative Capacity in Rats (무, 양파의 시료제조 방법에 따른 흰쥐의 지방대사와 항산화능에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of dry powders, ethanol extracts and juices of radish and onion on lipid metabolism, lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzyme activity in rats. Forty-nine male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 157$\pm$6g were blocked into seven groups according to body weight and raised for four weeks with diets containing 5%(w/w) dry powders of two different vegetables consumed frequently by Korean-radish(Raphanus sativus L.) and onion(Allium cepa L.), ethanol extracts and juices from equal amount of each dry powder. All the powders, ethanol extracts and juices of radish and onion decreased total lipids, triglycerides and total cholesterol concentrations in plasma and liver. Above all, onion ethanol extract decreased them most remarkably. It was thought that organosulfur compounds and flavonoids extracted from onion by ethanol inhibited biosynthesis and absorption of lipid and promoted degradation of lipid. Radish powder also decreased them by increasing fecal excretions of total lipids, triglycerides and total cholesterol most effectively. Catalase and glutathine peroxidase(GSH-px) activities in red blood cell(RBC) were most remarkably increased by radish powder and onion powder respectively. Superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase and GSH-px activities in liver were most remarkably increased by onion ethanol extract, radish powder and onion ethanol extract respectively. Xanthine oxidase(XOD) activities in liver were most effectively decreased by ethanol extracts of radish and onion. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels in plasma and liver of experimental groups were significantly lower than those of controls. Above all, onion powder decreased them most effectively. It was thought that vitamin E and high flavonoids in onion powder inhibited lipid peroxidation, promoting liver and RBC SOD, catalase and GSH-px activities and inhibiting XOD activities effectively. Flavonoids in onion ethanol extract inhibited lipid peroxidation, promoting three antioxident enzyme activities and inhibiting XOD activities most remarkably. Also flavonoids and high vitamin C in radish powder inhibited lipid peroxidation, promoting liver and RBC catalase most remarkably and inhibiting XOD activities. In conclusion, radish and onion were effective in lowering lipid levels and inhibiting of lipid peroxidation in animal tissue. From these data, radish and onion can be recommended in the treatment and prevention of diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer and in delaying aging. As ethanol from onion were most effective in lowering lipid level and promoting three antioxident enzymes, and inhibited lipid peroxidation as did we should try to utilize onion skin which is discarded though reported to have abundant flavonoids. Effect of Mixture of Hymexazole and Metalaxyl on Growth and Low Temperature Injury in Rice Seedlings (Hymexazole과 Metalaxyl의 혼합제처리가 수도 유묘의 생육 및 저온장해에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl(Tachigarace) on the growth and reducing low temperature injury in rice seedlings. The amount of mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) applied to reduce low temperature injury was 0, 9, 18 and 36mgr per pot (5${\times}$15${\times}$10cm) by soil incorperation befor sowing. Aging seedling was investigated on the growth responses by the application of 0.36gr mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) per tray (30${\times}$60${\times}$3cm) after cutting of leaf at 35 day-old seedling. Rice seedlings treated with mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) were better in the growth of top and roots, dry weight, erecting and rooting abilities than untreated seedlings. The effective amount of mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) to increase erecting and rooting abilities was 18 mgr per pot. Under low temperature treatment, 12$^{\circ}C$, the leaf discoloration and dead leaf percent of rice seedlings were markedly decreased in the seedlings treated with mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) as compared with untreated seedlings. The more amount of mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) upto 36mgr per pot, the more effective on the low temperature injury in the seedling. The effect of mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) to reduce low temperature damage in rice seedlings was mainly due to decreasing less physiological activities on the expanding leaf area and rooting, transpiration, stomatal diffusion and chlorophyll content of the leaves and oxygen consumption of the roots. Plant height, top dry weight and leaf area of aging seedlings were increased with mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) treatment and leaf cutting as compared with untreated seedling and intact leaf, respectively. The ratio of missing hill of aging seedling was increased with increasing the period of growing seedling and was decreased due to leaf cutting, whereas the effect of mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) application was not observed. Rooting ability of aging seedlings was decreased with lengthening of the period of raised seedling and was increased with mixture of hymexazole and metalaxyl (Tachigarace) treatment and leaf cutting.

Extraction and Purification of Polysaccharides from Phellinus linteus Mycelia (상황버섯의 균사체로부터 다당류의 추출과 정제)

  • To maximize the obtained polysaccharides from Phellinus linteus mycelia, effects of extraction and purification conditions including dialysis time (8, 16, 24, 48 h) on an amount of the polysaccharides were investigated. As extraction temperature ($50{\sim}95^{\circ}C$), ratio of solvent volume to the dry weight of mycelia (10, 15, 20, 25 ml/g), extraction time(2, 4, 6, 8 h), final concentration of ethanol (70, 75, 80, 85%), and aging time (1, 4, 8, 16 h) increased, an amount of the polysaccharides was increased. An increase in precipitation time up to 24 h increased an amount of the polysaccharides but a further increase in precipitation time after 24 h did not changed largely an amount of the polysaccharides. Three precipitation solvents (ethanol, methanol, acetone) were tested. An amount of the polysaccharides was increased in order to acetone, ethanol, and methanol. On the optimal extraction condition, extraction temperature, ratio of water volume to the dry weight of mycelia, and extraction time were $95^{\circ}C$, 25 ml/g, and 8 h, respectively.

Tracking Performance Test of Polymer Insulator with Salt Solution which is added Surface Active Agent (계면활성제가 첨가된 염수용액에 따른 폴리머 애자의 트래킹 성능 평가)

  • Recently, polymer insulators that are used for high voltage applications have some advantages such as light weight, small size, vandalism resistance, hydrophobicity and easy making process. During outdoor service of polymer insulators, the surface of the insulating material is frequently subjected to moisture and contamination that lead to dry band arcing. Their tracking resistance, erosion resistance, end sealing and shed design are very important because dry band arcing causes degradation of polymer surface. Aging test to estimate life property of polymer insulator is executed through several international standard such as IEC 61109 and CEA tracking wheel test, but is not getting clear conclusion yet. There are two methods in the diagnosis method of polymer insulator such as off-line and on-line. The diagnosis methods in off-line are external condition analysis by the eye, contaminant analysis on surface, surface analysis, pollution withstand voltage test, power frequency flashover voltage test, lightning impulse flashover test, tensile fracture load test and flexural load test. Polymer material is also investigated it's tracking resistance by adding surface active agent in IEC 587. In this paper, the tracking performance of polymer insulator with salt solution which is added surface active agent. The diagnosis of insulator sample has been analyzed by leakage current and visual examination, STRI guide and thermal image camera.
