  • The influence of fuel spray characteristics on engine performance has been known as one of the major concerns to Improve fuel economy and to reduce exhaust emissions. In general, the UBHC(Unburned Hydrocarbon) emission could be reduced by decreasing the droplet size of the fuel sprays. In PFI (Port Fuel Injection) gasoline engines, the mixture of air and fuel would not be uniform under a certain condition, because the breakup and production of spray droplets are made in a short distance between the fuel injector and intake valve sheat. In this study, were investigated the transient spray characteristics and dynamic behavior of droplets from 2holes-2sprays and 4holes-2sprays type injectors used in PFI gasoline engine. Mean droplet size and optical concentration were measured by LDPA (Laser Diffraction Particle size Analyzer). The variation of droplet mean diameter and optical concentration were measured for understanding the behavior of unsteady spray.

  • The spray characteristics and drop size measurements have been experimentally studied in liquid jets injected into subsonic crossflow. With water as fuel injection velocity, injection angle and atomizer internal flows were varied to provide of jet operation conditions. The injector internal flow was classified as three modes such as a non-cavitation flow, cavitation, and hydraulic flip flows. Pulsed Shadowgraph Photography measurement was used to determine the spatial distribution of the spray droplet diameter in a subsonic crossflow of air. And this study also obtains the SMD(Sauter Mean Diameters) distribution by using PLLIF(Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique. The objectives of this research are getting a droplet distribution and drop size measurement of each condition and compare with the other flows effect. As the result, This research have been showed the droplet size were spatially dependent on air-stream velocity, fuel injection velocity, injection angle effects and normalized distance from the injector exit length.(x/d, y/d)There are also different droplet size characteristics between cavitation, hydraulic flip and the non-cavitation flows.

  • The present study investigated dynamically and thermally interacting droplets in a closely spaced tandem array. By measuring the velocity and diameter of the droplet traveling along the isothermal vertical plate drag coefficients and vaporization rates of droplets at certain location were obtained. During the experiment initial droplet spacings were less than 5, and initial droplet diameters were ranged between 280 .mu.m and 700 .mu.m Drag coefficients on closely spaced droplets were placed far below the standard drag coefficient, for which it was caused turbulence induced from aforelocating droplets also narrow spaces among droplets restricted heat transfer to droplets from hot gas flow. In addition evaporated vapor entrapted between droplets was major factor in delaying droplet vaporization. With the experimental results the drag coefficient was correlated with respect to Reynolds number for the droplet as follows : $c_{D}$ =2.4/Red.$^{0.37}$

  • Recently, inkjet technology has emerged as one of the most powerful tools for patterning electronics devices, such as large area display applications, RFID, PCB patterning, etc. By using the Inkjet technology, the droplet speed as well as the size can be controlled precisely. In this paper, the relationship between waveform and droplet size will be investigated by means of experiment. Also the relationship between inkjet speed and droplet size will be discussed. It was shown from experimental results that ink droplet size from the nozzle diameter of $50{\mu}m$ can be varied from 37 to $58{\mu}m$ by modifying the inkjet waveform when the speed of the droplet is 1m/sec. Finally, experimental results indicate that small drops are more difficult to generate than large drops since the jetting conditions for making small drops are sensitively affected by the dwell time variation.

  • This study investigates the evaporation characteristics of paired sessile droplets on a heated substrate. In particular, the evaporation time and contact line behaviors were analyzed based on the droplet-to-droplet distance and substrate temperature. The contact line behavior and volume variations were visualized using the shadowgraph method. It was observed that the contact diameter and contact angle exhibited similar behavior for both single and paired droplets regardless of the droplet-to-droplet distance and substrate temperature. The paired droplets demonstrated a longer evaporation time than the single droplet due to the vapor accumulation between the droplets. Furthermore, the scaled lifetime, defined as the ratio of evaporation time between paired and single droplets, increased as the droplet-to-droplet distance decreased and decreased as the substrate temperature increased, attributed natural convection.

  • We developed inkjet based measurement system for micro-droplet behavior on a substrate. By using the inkjet dispenser, a droplet, which is as small as few pico-liter in volume, can be jetted and the amount can be controlled. After jetting, the droplet image on the substrate is acquired from side view camera. Then, droplet profile is extracted to measure droplet volume, contact angle and evaporation characteristics. Also top view image of the droplet is acquired for better understanding of droplet shape. The previous contact angle measurement method has limitations since it mainly measures the ratio of height and contact diameter of droplet on a substrate. Unlike previous measurement system, our proposed method has advantages because various behavior of droplet on substrate can be effectively analyzed by extracting the droplet profile.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the interaction phenomena of droplet array combustion in ambient environment. The droplet with 1 mm in diameter was supported from an optical fiber and ignited with a hot wire. Combustion lifetimes and burning rate constants were measured for fuel of nheptane according to parameters, which were junction and suspender spacings, and array configuration. Results show that the burning process considerably depends on the initial away configuration. The d$^2$-law is found to be correct when applied to both of the droplets in away and the single droplet. For separation distance of about 5mm, there exists a critical state. So the transition from a merged flame to separated flames occurs and burning velocity is much faster than before. Combustion lifetime of the lower droplet is shorter than that of the upper droplet in the two-dimensional arrays combustion. Burning rate constants of the droplets in arrays are smaller than that of the single droplet, while they become higher as separation distance increases. Combustion lifetimes of the droplets in arrays are longer than that of the single droplet and decrease as separation distance increase. It is concluded that the array configuration and the mergedness of the flame are the most important factors governing multi-droplet combustion.

  • The characteristics of Diesel spray droplets, such as the velocity and the diameter were simultaneously measured by using an improved Interferometric Laser Imaging for Droplet Sizing method. The experiments were carried out using an accumulator-type unit injector system and a constant-volume vessel. Two dimensional cross-section photographs of sprays were also taken using a double-pulsed Nd- YAG laser sheet and a linear array CCD camera. As a result, interesting relations between the droplets diameter and the velocity were found.

  • This paper presents disintegration process of the small rotational fuel injector. In order to understand disintegration precess, we measured droplet diameter, velocity and spray distribution by the PDPA(Phasse Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. Also spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag flash photography. From the test results, the liquid column emerging from the injection orifice is mainly controlled by the rotational speeds. Furthermore, droplet diameter(SMD) and spray distribution were strongly influenced by the diameter of the injection orifice.

  • A study has been conducted to clarify the effect of watery vapor concentration in hot ambient on droplet evaporation. Droplets of water, ethanol, n-hexadecaneand n-heptane were used in this experimental study. Ambient conditions are fixed at 470 K in temperature, 0.1 MPa in pressure and 2 m/s in velocity of ambient air. Watery vapor concentration was changed 0%~40% by 10% by add water to air. To obtain the time histories of droplet diameter after exposed in ambient, a suspended droplet in hot and humid ambient stream was synchronized with a back flash light, and enlarged droplet images were taken by a CCD camera. The evaporation rate constant of water droplet decreases slightly with the vapor concentration because diffusion velocity reduction of droplet vapor occurs on the surface. The values of ethanol and n-heptane droplet actively increase by effect that water from condensation of vapor flows into the droplet. The evaporation rate constant of n-hexadecane which has higher boiling point than water increases within around 30% of the concentration.
