  • From the first customer located right at the substation to the last customer at the end of the line, voltage must be held within close limits, so the voltage regulation is more important than the thermal limit. On a typical distribution system during the peak load period, the voltage drop may be serious enough to cause unsatisfactory operation of home appliances in the residential area, and present many problems to manufacturing industries, where the voltage must be maintained within close limits to insure smooth operation. Among all the factors contributing to voltage drop in the distribution system, the voltage drop in the distribution transformer may account for 30% of this figure. If we can eliminate this factor, the power companies can provide better quality electricity to more customers with the existing distribution facilities, thus saving on initial investment costs. Taking all these problems into consideration, the author undertook the design of a capacitive transformer which would give zero voltage drop at rated load and at 80% lagging power factor while incorporating overload features to withstand 400% overload for at least 100 seconds. The following are the results obtained through design, manufacture and test of an initial experimental transformer built with these specific purposes.

  • A muffler design in the exhaust system is critical to provide fur low noise in shipboard spaces. In an attempt to effectively design the low noise muffler, it Is important to evaluate the performance of the muffler considering not only the noise, but also pressure drop as well. For this purpose, a test system of large exhaust mufflers fur ship propulsion systems was designed based on ISO 7235. The substitution test fur determining both the insertion loss and pressure drop of mufflers was carried out. A ship exhaust muffler is considered as a test example and the insertion loss and pressure drop were obtained.

  • A high-pressure, high-pressure drop control valve, which transforms the power transfer of a system by reducing the inlet pressure of 345bartothe outlet pressure of 112bar, is a fundamental component in an offshore plant process. With the increasingly growing market share of the maritime industry, this valve has been expected to be a high-value-added product. This study not only analyzes the relation between pressure drop and fluid velocity in a trim by using fluid analysis, but also examines the possibility of cavitation in a valve in addition to the plot for the extension of lifespan. Based on the analysis results, the design and production method of the valve are established, and accordingly, performance evaluation is carried out. It is demonstrated that the pressure drop from 345bar to 112bar is more feasible in the presence of the trim, which can induce a continuous and diminutive pressure drop in order to prevent cavitation in a high-pressure drop control valve. Furthermore, despite the fluid velocity near a seatring being found to be over 30m/s, the lifespan of the valve is determined to be adequate considering the operation condition of a prototype valve of 80%.

  • The accelerated corrosion by Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) has caused unexpected rupture of piping, hindering the safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs) and sometimes causing personal injury. For the safety, it may be necessary to select some pipes in terms of condition monitoring and to measure the change in thickness of pipes in real time. Direct current potential drop (DCPD) method has advantages in on-line monitoring of pipe wall thinning. However, it has a disadvantage in that it is difficult to quantify thinning due to various thinning shapes and thus there is a limitation in application. The machine learning approach has advantages in that it can be easily applied because the machine can learn the signals of various thinning shapes and can identify the thinning using these. In this paper, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed by applying direct current to a carbon steel pipe and measuring the potential drop. The fundamental machine learning was carried out and the piping thinning model was developed. In this process, the features of DCPD to thinning were proposed.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the dynamic strength characteristics of LNG carriers cargo containment system under impact loads experimentally. The material properties were experimentally obtained for individual components of MARK III insulation system. A series of impact tests was performed using a custom-built drop experiment facility as varying heights and weights of the drop object. Crack initiation and propagation were measured during the cyclic dry drop experiment. The quantitative relationship between impact load and crack initiation as well as the cycle number and crack propagation were reported.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify body type for ready-to-wear sizes. The subjects were 300 women ages of 18-24. they were measured direct anthropometry. The body types for sizing system were divided by Rohrer Index. KS drop value and ISO drop value. The results of this study were as follows. 1. By adapting the Rohrer Index. we classify 3 types from anthropometric measurements. The thin type covered 39.3%, the standard type 51.0% and the obesity type 18.7%. The characteristics of clusters were as follows. Thin type was characterized by tall. slender type and slim. The standard type was characterized by middle sized. The obesity type was characterized by short. fat type. and large bust. 2. By adapting the KS system drop value. we classify 3 types from anthropometric measurements. • Recently, the use of transfer slab system has increased greatly. However, several construction problems are being encountered owing to its excessive thickness. Therefore, in this study, a transfer slab system that uses a reverse drop panel, which can utilize the facility space of the pit floor by reducing the transfer slab thickness, was considered. To investigate the shear behavior of transfer slab system that uses the reverse drop panel, the two-way shear strength of transfer slab-column connection with the reverse drop panel was analyzed using nonlinear FE analysis. In addition, the two-way shear strength evaluations of transfer slab with the reverse drop panel conducted using the existing evaluation methods were verified by comparing the strengths predicted by those methods with the results of nonlinear FE analysis.

  • The solar air heater has various performances according to an obstacle installed in the air duct. Many studies on thermal performance have been conducted. But many of these studies were using a kind of rib type obstacle attached at the bottom of absorbing plate, but they are so hard to be manufactured. In this study, characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop in the solar air heater with various horizontal rectangular obstacles was investigated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. As a result, the heat transfer performance was improved from 1.2 to 3.32 times depending on installation conditions of rectangular obstacle. The pressure drop, however, also increased with increment of heat transfer performance from 2.8 to 180 times only by changing installation conditions of rectangular obstacle. Thus, the performance factor presenting the thermal performance enhancement on the same pressure drop was also confirmed. As a result, the highest value of 0.828 as better performance factor was obtained at the lower height of rectangular obstacle and this value has started to decrease with increment of heat transfer performance. In the end, it could be confirmed that the pressure drop was carried higher than the quantity of improvement of the heat transfer performance when the heat transfer performance was increased by change of installation conditions of rectangular obstacle. Both heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop to be required for system need to be considered before the rectangular obstacles are applied to the solar air heater.
