  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical quenching system for residual ozone and to determine the operating condition for the quenching system. Hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and sodium thiosulfate ($Na_2S_2O_3$) were investigated as quenching reagents for ozone removal, and the tendency of each chemical was notably different. In the case of $H_2O_2$, the degradation rate of ozone was increased as the concentration of $H_2O_2$ increase, and temperature and pH value have a significant effect on the degradation rate of ozone. On the other hand, the degradation rate of ozone was not affected by the concentration of $Na_2S_2O_3$, temperature and pH value, due to the high reactivity between the ${S_2O_3}^{2-}$ and ozone. This study evaluates the decomposition mechanism of ozone by $H_2O_2$ and $Na_2S_2O_3$ with consideration for the water quality and reaction time. Furthermore, the removal test for the quenching reagents, which can be remained after reaction with ozone, was conducted by GAC process.

  • In this study, we secured wasted oyster shells as raw materials in order to applicate it to corrosion preventive ceramic coating reagent in the drinking water pipeline. Then, we investigated physicochemical properties in terms of basic calcination processing. Oyster shell was composed with 92.08% of $CaCO_3$ and the shapes of the pulverized particles were mostly oval. The calcined oyster shell showed increasing tendency of weight loss and of calcium content with the lapse of time and increase of temperature. The result indicates that the higher calcination processing temperature and the uniformly smaller particle size give more efficiency during calcination process. Therefore it is anticipated to be a good ceramic material to protect a surface of cleaning bed and inside of a tap water pipes from corrosion.

  • This study was performed to develop and evaluate beverage prepared with optimally roasted seoritae to maximize the isoflavone content and antioxidant activities of the beverage. Isoflavone content was maximized at the roasting temperature of $110^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. Both DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical scavenging activity along with total polyphenol content were highest when seoritae was roasted at $110^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. Western blotting was used to determine the level of nuclear factor of activated T-cells 1(NFATc1) involved in controlling osteoclast differentiation. The results showed that NFATc1 had a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect when the RoS110 (roasted seoritae at $110^{\circ}C$ for 20 min) samples were processed at varying concentrations (10, 50, and $100{\mu}g/mL$). Tea samples were prepared from optimally roasted seoritae by varying brewing times (5~90 min) at $65^{\circ}C$, and tea brewed for 60 min had the highest preference with $65^{\circ}C$ as the preferred temperature for drinking.

  • The examination of the pollutants originated from domestic sewage, industrial and agricutural activities the existences of some toxic heavy metals, organic matters and pathogenic microorganisms. A recent report of WHO brought out that such pollutants are in existence with above roughly 2,000 kinds of chemical substances and amongst them about 750 chemicals have been indentified by drinking water. And above 600 kinds of them are organic pollutants and in addition these include carcinogenic mutagenic and poisonous substances. This is not intended to embody a study of broad confined to various approaches on organic materials, and therefore will be THM produced on injection of chlorine at water filtration plant. To specify the relations between THM and factors having an effect upon THM such as TOC, Cl$_{2}$, Temperature, pH and reaction time, first of all the recovery ratio for analytical methods of THM (Head sapce, purge and trap, Liquid/ Liquid Extraction methods) was investigated. Provided that by using it,the correction coefficients are obtained, the accuracy of data might be able to be enhanced through analysis. The result of the experiments are given in the followings. 1) Among three kinds of analytical methods, recovery rate was higher in order of purge and trap Liquid/Liquid Extraction, Head space. There is no great difference in recovery rate among three methods. 2) The higher the concentration of TOC, the more the amount of THM. 3) The higher the reaction temperature, the more the amount of THM. 4) The longer the reaction time, the more the amount of THM. 5) The higher the pH, the more the amount of THM. 6) The higher the concectration of chlorine, the more the amount of THM.

  • This study was examined for effects of acupuncture of Zusanli (ST36) on the facial thermography in health subjects. The volunteers who participating in this study had taken rest for 20 - 30 mins in room temperature (23-$25^{\circ}C$) before the examination and informed them what to prohibit smoking, drinking and administration of drug for the previous day. The thermography of face was taken using Infra-Red Imaging System (IR 2000, MEDI-CORE Co., Korea) by time interval of 15 minutes at 15 min before, just before and 15 min after, 30 min after and 45 min after acupuncture stimulation. Acupuncture was applied to the left ST36 for 30 mins. The results showed that acupuncture of ST36 significantly decreased the temperature of all the areas of facial surface comparing to those of control group. Also, it was observed that the quantities of thermal changes following acupuncture of ST36 been increased significantly at the A1, A4, A6, A7 and A9 ROIs (region of interest) comparing that of control group. Observed the thermography classified by ROI, it was clear the fact that acupuncture of ST36 could modulate the specific areas concerning to the facial pathway of Stomach Meridian, because the thermal responses following acupuncture of ST36 were specific at the A1, A2, A5 and A9 ROIs, relatively. These results suggest that acupuncture of ST36 may modulate thermal distributions and changes of facial areas concerned with Stomach Meridian.

  • Frequent algal blooms at major river systems in Korea have been serious social and environmental problems. Especially, the appearance of cyanobacteria with toxic materials is a threat to secure a safe drinking water. In order to model the behaviour of cyanobacteria cell number, an exclusive causality analysis using prewhitening technique was introduced to delineate effective parameters to predict the cell numbers of cyanobacteria in Seungchon Weir and Juksan Weir along Youngsan river system. Both input and output transfer function models were obtained to explain temporal variation of cyanobacteria cell number. A threshold behaviour of water temperature was implemented into the model development to consider winter characteristic of cyanobacteria. The implementation of water temperature threshold into the model structure improves the predictability in simulation. Even though the input output transfer model cannot completely explained all blooms of cyanobacteria, the simple structure of model provide a feasibility in application which can be important in practical aspect.

  • This study aims at a proposal of the plan that can improve raw water quality by an experimental study using influent water of Nak-dong river, which has been used as raw water for drinking in U-city, through the establishment of the submerged biofilter process PILOT PLANT of media packing channel method. From the analysis of removal efficiency for each water quality item of the collected sample, following results are obtained. First of all, the removal rate of suspended material, BOD, COD, T-N, TOC, turbidity, and $NH_3$ -N appear 82%, 78%, 42%, 15%, 57%, 43%, 54%, and 55% respectively and it is known that the submerged biofilter process of media packing channel method takes effects on water quality improvement from the above analysis results of water treatment efficiency. And the analyzed results for water temperature, residence time, and activities of microorganism, which can be the factors affect on water quality improvement, are as follows. 1) The removal rate variation of SS, BOD, and COD attendant on water temperature change is examined and it is known that the removal rate increases at $13^{\circ}C$ or above. 2) The removal rate of SS, BOD, and COD attendant on residence time is most active in the range of 0~18hr, 0~1.8hr, 0~2.7hr respectively, so it is found that the removal rate becomes smaller after 2.7hr. 3) From the examination of microorganism activity with the abundance of normal bacteria, it is found that the floating bacteria decrease as the flow distance from raw water inflow point of PILOT PLANT increases, and the adhesive bacteria have no concern with the flow distance. And it its known that the biomass of fine algae decreases as the flow distance from the raw water inflow point of PILOT PLANT increases from the examination with Chl-a.
