  • For the Purpose of the measurement of drifting condition of the anchovy drift gill net, some experiments were carried out in M. S Seong-Yang at the near sea of Kampo harbor in Korean east sea from August to October 1994, by using three set of GPS equipped with her net. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) In fixed position by GPS at Taebyon, the radius of 95% probability and shifted distance from standard position were respectively 79.8m, 21.0m. 2) The mean values of PDOP and HDOP of GPS at Taebyon were respectively 3.5, 1.9 and the stability of the position by GPS at Taebyon was found to be very high. 3) In the fishing ground of the position from Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 41.5'N to $Lat^{\circ}$. 43.5', from Long. $129^{\circ}$ 32.0'E to Long. $129^{\circ}$ 32.5'E, the direction of the whole stretched drift gill net was $190^{\circ}$ and the direction of the whole casted net was $200^{\circ}$ when casting the net was finished. When whole net was found to be drifting into the direction of $170^{\circ}\;to\;180^{\circ}$, and the mean drifting speed of that was 0.82kt. 4) In the fishing ground of the position from Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 44.0'N to Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 45.2'N, from Long. $129^{\circ}$ 30.1'E to Long. $129^{\circ}$ 31.2'E, the direction of the whole stretched net was 20$^{\circ}$ and the direction of the whole stretched net was $20^{\circ}$ when casting the net was finished. When hauling the net, the direction of the spreaded net appeared from the North into the South and the whole net was found to be drifting into the direction of $210^{\circ}\;to\;220^{\circ}$, and the mean drifting speed of that was 0.75kt. 5) In the fishing ground of the positioning from Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 44.9'N to Lat. $35^{\circ}$ 46.0'N, Long. $129^{\circ}$ 33.0'E to Long. $129^{\circ}$ 34.0'E, the direction to the whole stretched net was $35^{\circ}$ and the direction of the whole casted net was $50^{\circ}$ when casting the net was finished. When hauling the net, the direction of the spreaded net appeared into the South from the East and the whole net was found to be drifting into the direction of $330^{\circ}\;to\;40^{\circ}$, and the mean drifting speed of the was 0.63kt.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of fishery in offshore wind farms and evaluate the risk linked to the presence of turbines and submarine cables in these areas. With this objective, we studied an offshore wind farm in the Southwest Sea and the current state of vessels in the surrounding National Fishing Port. The risk assessment criteria for 22 fishing gears and methods were set by referring to the fishing boats; thereafter, the risk was assessed by experts. The fishing gears and methods that could be safely operated (i.e., associated with low risk) in the offshore wind farm were: single-line fishing, jigging, and the anchovy lift net. The risk was normal so that it is possible to operate, but the fishing gears and methods that need attention are: the set long line, drifting long line, troll line, squid rip hook, octopus pot, webfoot octopus pot, coastal fish pot, stow net on stake, winged stow net, stationary gill net, and drift gill net. Moreover, the fishing gears and methods difficult to operate in the of shore wind farm (i.e., associated with high risk) were: the dredge, beam trawl, and purse seine. Finally, those associated with very high risk and that should not be allowed in offshore wind farms were: the stow net, anchovy drag net, otter trawl, Danish seine, and bottom pair trawl.

  • A single specimen (1,058 mm TL) of Pteroplatytrygon violacea, belonging to the family Dasyatidae, was firstly collected by using drift gill net in the north-western coastal waters of Jejudo Island, Korea on 6 July, 2017. This species was characterized by having a broadly rounded snout, five pairs of gill openings, tail with a large spine, ventral tail fold not reaching to the tip of tail, no dorsal fold, and ventral surface of disc dark purple. Based on such morphological characters, the specimen was identified as P. violacea and confirmed with the nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. We added P. violacea to the Korean fish fauna and propose the new Korean names, "Bo-ra-saek-ga-o-ri-sok" and "Bo-ra-saek-ga-o-ri" for the genus and species, respectively.

  • Walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma fisheries in Korean waters have changed dramatically during the last three decades: the highest catches occurred in 1981, followed by continuous decreases through the 1990s, ending with a complete collapse of the population in the 2000s. The major spawning ground of walleye pollock is located in North Korean waters, and some juveniles (called nogari in Korean, <300 mm) migrate to the south for feeding and growth. Since the 1960s, Korean fishermen have often caught juveniles, and the weight (metric tons) of juvenile catch was recorded from 1975-1997. However, because the walleye pollock were not aged, the population age structure was not delineated. We developed a model to estimate the number of walleye pollock of each size class based on catch statistics of adults and juveniles, the catch proportion of each size class, and length and weight information on specimens collected by Danish-seine and drift-gill-net fisheries. The model results demonstrated that the recruitment size of walleye pollock was consistently within the 200-250mm size class, and the highest number of this size class occurred in 1981, although values greatly fluctuated interannually. The number of juvenile pollock was 10.4 times higher than that of adult pollock during 1975-1997. The total yield of juvenile pollock was 0.95 million tons, which was equivalent to about 68.2% of total pollock production. The number of juvenile pollock caught during the same period, however, was 16 billion, comprising about 91.2% of the total number caught. Such high fishing pressure on juvenile pollock is considered one of the main factors causing the collapse of the pollock population.

  • This is the first report of Brachirus annularis (Pleuronectiformes: Soleidae) from Korea. A specimen of B. annularis (229.0 mm standard length) was firstly collected by drift gill net at a fishing ground locating between Jejudo and Geomundo Islands, the southern coast of Korea on 31 March, 2019. This species was characterized by having five large, deep colored patches on the ocular side of body, each patch outlined by dark brown ring, united dorsal and anal fins jointed with caudal fin, and short pectoral fin. We add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean names, "Eol-luk-seo-dae-sok" and "Eol-luk-seo-dae" for the genus and species, respectively.

  • Yield per recruit model is the most popular method for fisheries stock assessment. However, stock assessment using yield per recruit model can lead to recruitment overfishing as this model only considers the maximum yield per recruit without spawning biomass for reproduction. For this reason, spawning biomass per recruit model which reveals variations of spawning stock biomass per fishing mortality (F) and age at first capture ($t_c$) is considered as more proper method for stock assessment. There are mainly two methods for spawning biomass per recruit model known as age specific selectivity method and knife-edged selectivity method. In the knife-edged selectivity method, the spawning biomass per recruit has been often calculated using biomass per recruit value by multiplying the maturity ratio of the recruited age. But the maturity ratio in the previous method was not considered properly in previous studies. Therefore, a new method of the knife-edged selectivity model was suggested in this study using a weighted average of the maturity ratio for ages from the first capture to the lifespan. The optimum fishing mortality in terms of $F_{35%}$ which was obtained from the new method was compared to the old method for small yellow croaker stock in Korea. The value of $F_{35%}$ using the new knife-edged selectivity model was 0.302/year and the value using the old model was 0.349/year. However, the value of $F_{35%}$ using the age specific selectivity model was estimated as 0.320/year which was closer to the value from the new knife-edged selectivity model.
