Dredged sea soil contains various contaminants. First priority to recycle dredged sea soil is to pretreat it to remove various contaminants because recycling dredge sea soil without any pre-treatment may cause a secondary contamination due to the leaching of hazardous chemicals. In this study, pretreated dredged sea soil was used to investigate pozzolanic activity. The properties of pretreated dredged sea soil were investigated, the method for heat treatment was determined, and the compressive strength of mortar using dredged sea soil was examined to evaluate pozzolanic activity. According to the results, pretreated dredged sea soil has some possibility to work as a pozzolanic material. When dredged sea soil was heat treated for 90min at 550℃, compressive strength was shown to be comparable to that of plain cement mortar.

Large amount of dredged sea soil is produced in southeast seashore region in during harbor maintenance. Disposal of dredged sea soil has become difficult due to the environmental regulation. Therefore, disposal of dredged sea soil method is to landfill. But, the capacity of the landfill limit state and if the size of the dredged sea soil is in the range of silt or clay, it cannot be used as reclamation material because ground subsidence occur. In this study, analyzed the pozzolanic activity of dredged sea soil. Analysis of the results showed a pozzolanic activity of dredged sea soil. In addition, incorporation of heat treated dredged sea soil increase both 28 and 56 day compressive strength of mortar specimen.

Recently, the amounts of dredge sea soil in south Korea have been increasing because of various maintenance works at harbors and rivers. Dredged sea soil contains various contaminants. Hence, prior to recycling the dredged sea soil, the various contaminants should be removed to prevent a secondary contamination due to the leaching of hazardous chemicals. Pretreated dredged sea soil can be buried under the ground or used for land reclamation. In this study, however, pretreated dredged sea soil was used to investigate the level of pozzolanic activity. The properties of pretreated dredged sea soil were investigated, the method for heat treatment was determined, and the compressive strength of mortar using dredged sea soil was examined. According to the XRF result, the main components of dredged sea soil were $SiO_2$ of over 55%, and $Al_2O_3$ and $SO_3$ of some amounts. Results from XRD and TG/DTA showed that pretreated dredged sea soil can be used as a pozzolanic material. When dredged sea soil was thermally treated for 90 min at $550^{\circ}C$, a compressive strength result was similar to that of control mortar.
Although the quantity of dredged soils has increased owing to recent new harbor construction, sea course management, polluted sediment dredging, and four-river project, the reuse or recycling of those dredged soils has not done properly in Korea. To develop measures to utilize them in various ways for reuse or recycling, the biophysicochemical properties of dredged soils and sediment were assessed in this study. Samples were classified according to their sources-river and sea-by location, and as dredged soil and sediment depending on storage time. The results showed that dredged materials from the sea have high clay content and can be used for making bricks, tiles, and lightweight backfill materials, while dredged materials from the river have high sand content and can be used in sand aggregates. Separation procedures, depending on the intended application, should be carried out because all dredged materials are poorly sorted. All dredged soils and sediments have high salinity, and hence, salts should be removed before use for cultivation. Since dredged materials from the sea have adequate concentrations of nutrients, except phosphate, they can be used for creating and restoring coastal habitats without carrying out any additional removal processes. The high overall microbial activities in dredged materials from the river suggested that active degradation of organic matter, circulation of nutrients, and provision of nutrients may occur if these dredged materials are used for cultivation purpose.

This study was conducted to determine the changes in soil chemical properties and the growth of seedling according to the different dredged soil improving methods at slope of Saemangeum sea dike. Undersea dredged soil was improved by five different methods. Seedlings of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica, Chionanthus retusa, Celtis sinensis, and Pinus thunbergii were planted after 9 month of experience site installation, then soil pH, NaCl concentration in soil, soil organic matter (SOM), and survival rate and height of seedling was measured. Initial soil pH was highest in the control plot but it decreased to the similar level with other soil improving plots after 35 months. There were no differences in NaCl concentration between the control and soil improving plots, and it showed decreasing tendency during the study period. In the control plot, initial SOM was lowest among that of other plots during the study period. The survival rate of 36 months after planting of P. thunbergii was highest among the species. The gap of the tree growth of P. thunbergii between the control plot and the soil improving plots was small, however, other species showed relatively higher tree height in the soil improving plots than the control plots. Creation forest with P. thunbergii might be a cost effective afforestation in coastal reclaimed land since it rarely needs additional improvement of dredged soil.
Detention basin is the temporary holding pond of treated water prior to flow out to the sea. It is very common to dredge the soil from the bottom of detention basin to keep up the water holding capacity. In this study, the amount of volume reduction of dredged soil from detention basin was estimated based on the laboratory test results. The percentage of soil particles in dredged organic soil is about 12.5∼21.9% by weight. The content of heavy metal and environmental effect for dredged soil itself and solidified dredged soil were analysed and the results are meet the standards of environmental requirement.

Dredged soil from sea has much higher water content than liquid limit of clay and even if small loads apply, it will suffer a great settlement. Therefore it is very difficult to perform a consolidation test with general consolidation apparatus because of high water content. In this study Rowe Cell Apparatus consolidation tests have been performed with 1 remolding clay of water content 56% and 4 slurry clays of a water content of 100%, 120%, 133% and 150%. From the test results the consolidation characteristics such as compression index, secondary compression index and consolidation coefficient have been investigated with a variation of water content of dredged soil. The equations to get consolidation constants such as a compression index, a consolidation coefficient have been proposed with the field water content.

Seashore landfill projects use undersea pump dredging method for construction of airport and factory site. Coarse grain soil from the dredging is considered for use at inland. West sea shore bottom consists of primarily coarser grained silt-sand and this component contains far more percentage than is the case with East sea and South sea area. This soil shows very different characteristic at consolidation and compaction behavior. This research targets to utilize this type of dredging soil. Test specimen is from West sea (Saemangum) dredged soil landfill site. Model analysis is done for getting prediction of original soil relative density and N-value from dynamic compaction energy variance. Dynamic compaction energy is calculated for efficient foundation design.
The dredged soils of western sea of Korea have been used as the fill materials because it possess the characteristics that constitute silt, silty sand and sand mainly. However, a study on dredged soils as the fill materials is insufficient. Hence, in this present study, the application the dredged soils of western sea of Korea as the fill materials was confirmed. Primary, the composition characteristics of the ground was analyzed to confirm the application on dredged soils as the fill materials by the piezo-cone penetration test. In laboratory test, it was performed the self-weight consolidation test for mechanical characteristics of the dredged soils. The direct shear test using self-weight consolidation test sample for shear strength characteristics was performed after self-weight consolidation test. Additionally, the mechanical characteristics of the dredged soils on elapsed time using self-weight consolidation test sample, which is drained naturally, was evaluated. The dredged soils of western sea of Korea show that unit weight and shear strength is increased as natural drain time elapses.

The settling of the dredged soil may vary with mineral composition, grain size distribution, initial water content and salt concentration of suspension of the site. A series of settling column test was performed to investigate the behaviour of solid suspension material from dredging and reclamation. Settling mode was divided into four types from the observation of interface and settling curves of clay minerals and marine clay samples, and the relationship charts of salt concentration and the initial water content were established to use in the dredging operation with any salt concentration. The critical initial water content which was defined as a threshold of zone settling and the consolidation settling was varied with salt concentration of water and was proportional to the plasticity of soil in sea water.
