  • Recently the interest about the vortex intakes are rapidly increased because of its performance to drain a plenty of collected storm water at a time. The tangential intake a kind of vortex intakes is very applicable because this type is very simple and little against other types, but it has a big weakness that the vortex flow is not been rarely created below the design discharge. In this study, the characteristics of a tangential intake and two kinds of a newly suggested compound section type intake are analyzed by the 3D numerical modeling based on theories about the control shift and free drainage condition. The analysis focused on the flow condition, flow surface formation, depth-discharge relation, area ratio of air core. Based on this study, the mild-sloped compound section type intake is the optimal, but steep-sloped compound section type is also the optional for the small design discharge.

  • LID planning and application has been actively developed to reduce the runoff volume at increased impervious areas due to rapid urbanization. In this study, a performance and applicability evaluation was performed in an infiltration trench using the SWMM model, based on the experimental conditions for infiltration trenches. The infiltration trench application area was applied to 5~15% of the drainage area. The SWMM results of discharge and the BOD reduction efficiency were analyzed at a peak discharge of 45.7~61.9%, total discharge of 47.2~62.3%, and BOD load of 52.3~55.3. The discharge and BOD was estimated to be 12~24% higher and 37~38% smaller than the experimental results. This study can help in the application and performance evaluation of infiltration trenches.

  • Recently many authors have reported about the relationship of the volumes of hemorrhage in the brain parenchyme, hemorrhagic sites, optimal operation time, and the effects of mannitol and steroid on control of ICP to clinical manifestations. Many attempts to measue ICP in hydrocephalus, brain tumor, and head injury have been reported. But the measurements of intracranial pressure in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage are rare. Intracranial pressure was monitored prospectively in 30 patients who had stereotaxic surgery for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. The results are as follows. 1. Intracranial pressure was increased in high $PaCO_2$. 2. There were no correlation in ICP, rebleeding and ADL at discharge(P > 0.05). 3. ICP was the most high level in 72 hours after operation. 4. There was 63.2% decrease in ICP after litigation with 6000 IU urokinase in the site of hemorrhage. 5. There was no correlation between the numbers of natural drainage and ADL at discharge(P > 0.05). 6. The higher the initial GCS, the higher the Postoperative GCS.

  • Acid mine drainage (AMD) results from sulfuric acid produced by the oxidation of pyrite, and contains large amounts of toxic elements. In the neutralization of AMD, iron and aluminum hydroxides are the major precipitates and those two can be separated with two-phase neutralization. In this study, removal of toxic elements by the two phases of neutralization was investigated using an AMD collected from the abandoned antimony mine in Gachang, Taegu. Contents of As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn in the AMD were higher than the criteria of river water quality or permissible waste water discharge. In the first phase, the AMD was neutralized to several % (25, 50, 75, 100, and 125) of $Fe(OH)_3$ equivalence point with solid $Ca(OH)_2$. In the second phase, the supernatant of the first phase neutralization was titrated to pH 7.5. After neutralization of the AMD to 100% of the $Fe(OH)_3$, equivalence point, most of Fe and Pb were removed but levels of As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Mn, and Zn were not reduced in the supernatant solution. In the second phase neutralization, levels of those toxic elements in the supernatants dropped below the wastewater discharge or river water quality criteria. This result suggests that the precipitate formed in the first phase of the neutralization process may be disposed without any special cares. Thus the two-phase neutralization scheme can reduce the cost of disposing precipitates containing toxic metals in comparison with the monophase neutralization scheme.

  • The existing equations for radial consolidation cannot account for the changes of well resistance with time and cannot predict the appropriate in-situ consolidation curve. In this study, small cylinder cell tests are performed to evaluate the discharge capacity of PVD. Also, a block sample of 1.2 m in diameter and 2.0 m in height was consolidated to observe the change in the drainage capacity with time for three types of PVD. From the test results on a block sample, the drainage curves normalized with initial drainage of each PVD are similar, regardless of the PVD type and the consolidation curve, which is predicted using solutions of radial consolidation based on the discharge capacity measured in a small cylinder cell tests, significantly overestimates the degree of consolidation. The term of well resistance in the radial consolidation solution was back-calculated to fit the consolidation curve of a large block sample and it is defined as the time dependent well resistance factor, L(t). The L(t) was found to be linearly proportional to the dimensionless time factor, Th. It was also shown that the consolidation curve evaluated by using L(t) provides more accurate prediction than the existing solution.

  • A drainage ditch is normally a component of drainage networks in farming systems to remove surplus water, but at the same time, it may act as a major conduit of agricultural nonpoint source pollutions such as sediment, nitrogen, phosphorus, and so on. The hybrid turbidity reduction system using biodegradable check dam and synthetic polymer was developed in this study to manage pollutant discharge from agricultural farmlands during rainfall events and/or irrigation periods. The performance of this hybrid system was assessed using a laboratory open channel sized in 10m-length and 0.2m-width. Various check dams using agricultural byproducts (e.g., rice straw, rice husks, coconut fiber and a mixture of rice husks and coconut fiber) were tested and additional physical factors (e.g., channel slope, flowrate, PAM dosage, turbidity level, etc.) affecting on turbidity reduction were applied to assess their performance. A series of lab experiments clearly showed that the hybrid turbidity reduction system could play a significant role as a supplementary of Best Management Practice (BMP). Moreover, the findings of this study could facilitate to develop an advanced BMP for minimizing nonpoint source pollution from agricultural farmlands and ultimately to achieve the sustainable agriculture.

  • Rapid changes of urban hydrologic events need new management operation rule of detention reservoir which is essential outflow control system in urban area. Therefore, this study is to develop the outflow management method of Seoul city considering the Han river flood characteristics, to analyze the inundation of detention reservoir according to variation of design storm patterns, and to examine the safety of gate due to design flood water level. From this study, new operation rule is presented. The design storm patterns are determined by instantaneous intensity method and Huff's quartile method. And the inflow hydrograph of detention reservoir is obtained by applying ILLUDAS model and RRL method. The operation rule of existing drainage pump is designed to have linear relation between storage and pumping discharge. But in this study, it is effective for preventing inundation when the operation rule of drainage pump have Gaussian function which is combined the storage of detention reservoir with its inflow according to increasing or decreasing of inflow hydrograph.

  • Field experiment was performed to investigate water and nutrient mass balances in paddy field with groundwater irrigation from May to October, 2001. The total water inflow was about 1,183mm in which rainfall, overflow from upstream paddy, and groundwater irrigation accounted for 43, 30, and 27%, respectively. Notice that the precipitation of the study period was less than the average annual precipitation. The total drainage was almost balanced with the inflow and more than half of it was occurred by surface drainage. From the nutrient mass balance analysis, the T-P output (17.56kg/ha) was estimated slightly lower than the input (20.90kg/ha) and the T-N output (130.41kg/ha) was slightly greater than the input(129.24kg/ha). However, the difference was within the expectation and the nutrient mass was thought to be balanced considering uncertainties in field experiment and other activities not included in the study such as algae and soil microorganisms. The surface discharge of nutrient, which was about 10% of total nutrient output, was mainly affected by fertilization and rainfall runoff. Therefore, prudent surface drainage plan might be necessary particularly for the fertilization period to prevent degradation of receiving water quality. The study was performed under abnormally low rainfall compared to the average annual rainfall record, and further monitoring in diverse rainfalls and irrigation methods is recommended to estimate nutrient behavior in the paddy field more reasonably.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate characteristics of irrigation return flow from paddy block in a reservoir irrigated district during growing seasons. The irrigation return flow was divided into three parts, quick return flow from irrigation canal (RFI), quick return flow from drainage canal (RFD), and delayed return flow (DRF). The RFI was calculated from water level and stage-discharge relationships at the ends of the irrigation canals. The DRF was estimated using measured infiltration amount from paddy fields of the irrigated district. A combined monitoring and modeling method was used to estimate the RFD by subtracting surface runoff from surface drainage. The paddy block irrigated from the Idong reservoir was selected to study the irrigation return flow components. The results showed that daily agricultural water supply (AWS), the RFI, and the RFD were $27.4mm\;day^{-1}$, $4.9mm\;day^{-1}$, and $19.8mm\;day^{-1}$, respectively in May, which were greater than other months (p<0.05). The return flow ratio of the RFI and the RFD were the greatest in July (34.6%) and May (72.3%), respectively. The daily AWS was closely correlated with the RFD (correlation coefficients of 0.76~0.86) in except for July with, while correlation coefficient with the RFI were 0.56 and 0.42 in June and July, respectively (p<0.01). The total irrigation return flow was 1,965 mm in 2011, and 1,588 mm in 2012, resulting in total return flow ratio of 84.6% and 79.1%, respectively. This results indicate that substantial amounts of agricultural water were returned to streams as irrigation return flow. Thus, irrigation return flow should be fully considered into the agricultural water resources planning in Korea.

  • Generally, the groundwater pressure is not considered in the design of concrete lining of bottom drainage tunnel. This design method implies that the phreatic surface is drawdown to the bottom of tullnel. When tile groundwater is continually supplied without changing of groundwater table, there is a possibility at which the groundwater pressure acting on the tunnel lining after the completion of tunnel. Therefore, the safety of tunnel lining must be checked in this case. In this paper, the stability of bottom drainage tunnel which is affected by groundwater discharge is analzed by using of the Finite Element Method at the 2 sections of subway where the groundwater level has a tittle change during the construction. As the result of analysis, the grouting for the water tightness and the permanent monitoring system of tunnel are required for maintaining of long-term stability of bottom drainage tunnel for the case of groundwater plassure acting on the tunnel lining is greater than that of design stage.
