  • Simultaneous pressure measurements on 2D square prisms with various corner modifications were performed in uniform flow with low turbulence level, and the testing Reynolds numbers varied from $1.0{\times}10^5$ to $4.8{\times}10^5$. Experimental models were a square prism, three chamfered-corner square prisms (B/D=5%, 10%, and 15%, where B is the chamfered corner dimension and D is the cross-sectional dimension), and six rounded-corner square prisms (R/D =5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, where R is the corner radius). Experimental results of drag coefficients, wind pressure distributions, power spectra of aerodynamic force coefficients, and Strouhal numbers are presented. Ten models are divided into various categories according to the variations of mean drag coefficients with Reynolds number. The mean drag coefficients of models with $B/D{\leq}15%$ and $R/D{\leq}15%$ are unaffected by the Reynolds number. On the contrary, the mean drag coefficients of models with R/D=20%, 30%, and 40% are obviously dependent on Reynolds number. Wind pressure distributions around each model are analyzed according to the categorized results. The influence mechanisms of corner modifications on the aerodynamic characteristics of the square prism are revealed from the perspective of flow around the model, which can be obtained by analyzing the local pressures acting on the model surface.

  • Experimental investigations have been carried out to find the effect of drag reduction caused by effective polymer additives in turbulent flows. The experiments were undertaken with a test section of 9.8mm pipe diameter and 3500 mm pipe length(L/D=357) in a closed loop, and Copolymer-X and Polyacrylamide(PAAM) were used as polymer additives for comparisons. The tests were carried out under different polymer concentrations, and the temperatures of the flow considered were $26^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$ at the flow velocity of 5.3 m/s. The rate of drag reduction obtained by Copolymer-X is found to be considerably higher than that of PAAM in turbulent flows. Copolymer-X is also found to be very reliable for mechanical degradation, which has not been the case in any other additives. It is concluded that Copolymer-X is considered to be one of the most effective agents as an additive especially for long time hydraulic transports. It is also found that polymer degradation in more likely at lower polymer concentrations in the turbulent flows.

  • Horseshoe vortices generated around the juncture between the ship and her appendages often lower a performance of the ship by increasing the appendage drag and making a non-uniform wake on the propeller plane. This paper investigates numerically how the fillet around the juncture of the leading edge influences the juncture flow and the appendage drag. Computation has been made by solving Navier-Stokes equations with MAC method and the flows are at the Reynolds number of 5,000. Five fillets with different height-breath ratios and curvatures are chosen as test models to find out the effects of the shape of fillets on the appendage drag and wake. Computational results show that fillets with a smaller height-breath ratio and/or with a concave curvature has smaller appendage drag and more uniform wake.

  • A study was carried out to investigate typical features of natural supercavitation generated behind axisymmetric bodies such as disk and cone shaped cavitators. Main focuses of the study were to observe formation process of the supercavity and to measure drag forces acting on cavitators. Experiments were carried out at the cavitation tunnel of the Chungnam National University (CNU-CT), which has a capability to make sufficient flow speed for supercavitation experiments and to remove broken cavity bubbles coming back to the test section. Blockage effects on supercavity dimensions were evaluated and an effort was made to correlate tunnel experiments with unbounded flow. On the basis of experimental and numerical results, geometrical features of supercavities and characteristics of drag forces were examined and their relations were proposed.

  • Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator was designed to reduce aerodynamic drag in a cylindrical model and wind tunnel test was performed at various wind velocities. In addition, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and flow visualization were used to investigate the effect of the plasma on the flow stream in the cylinderical model. At low wind velocity, the plasma actuator had no effects because flow separation did not appear. The aerodynamic drag was reduced by 14% at 14 m/s and by 27% at 17 m/s, respectively. It was confirmed by CFD analysis and flow visualization that the DBD plasma actuator decreased in pressure difference around the cylindrical model, thus decreasing the magnitude of wake vortex.

  • The drag and heat transfer reduction phenomena and degradation effects of drag reducing polymer solutions which are known as the viscoelastic fluids are investigated experimentally for the turbulent circular tube flows. Two stainless steel tubes are used for the experimental flow loops. Aqueous solutions of Polyacrylamide Separan AP-273 with concentrations from 300 to 1000 wppm are used as working fluids. Flow loops are set up to measure the friction factors and heat transfer coefficients of test tubes in the once-through system and the recirculating flow system. Test tubes are heated by power supply directly to apply constant heat flux boundary conditions on the wall. Capillary tube viscometer and falling ball viscometer are used to measure the viscous characteristics of fluids and the characteristic relaxation time of a fluid is determined by the Powell-Eyring model. The order of magnidude of the thermal entrance length of a drag reducing polymer solution is close to the order of magnitude of the laminar entrance length of Newtonian fluids. Dimensionless heat transfer coefficients of the viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluids may be represented as a function of flow behavior index n and newly defined viscoelastic Graetz number. As degradation continues viscosity and the characteristic relaxation time of the testing fluids decrease and heat transfer coefficients increase. The characteristic relaxation time is used to define the Weissenberg number and variations of friction factors and heat transfer coefficients due to degradation are presented in terms of the Weissenberg number.

  • To evaluate the aerodynamic efficiency of TR-S2 configuration designed by SUDC, wind tunnel tests of $40\%$ scaled model were done in KARI LSWT. The aerodynamic characteristics of plain and Semi-Slotted Flaperon were compared, and vortex generators were installed to improve flow pattern along the wing surface. Effects of the control surface such as elevator, rudder, aileron, and incidence angle of horizontal tail are measured for various testing conditions. Test results showed that Semi-Slotted Flaperon produced more favorable lift, lift/drag, and stall margins and application of vortex generator would be best choice to enhance wing performance. Longitudinal, lateral and directional characteristics of TR-S2 were found to be stable for the pitch and yaw motions.

  • A low speed wind tunnel test for the canard airplane model was conducted in KARI LSWT. To measure the required level of accuracy, the image system was applied for all elevator deflection and different canard incidence conditions. By doing so, the difference in aerodynamic characteristics between the forward swept and straight canards can be precisely evaluated, and the pros and cons of both canards arrangements can be discussed. Compared with both canard configurations at the same incidence angle setting, the straight canard has benefits in lift and drag, and the slope of pitching moment increases more moderately than the forward swept canard. The listed data and discussion would be useful to whom wants to design a canard airplane.

  • Republic of korea has begun operating high speed train service according as KTX service operation starts in 2004. Also, EMU whose maximum speed is over 150 kph will be starting to service with electrification and improvement of existing railroad. Moreover, metropolitan electric railways have begun an express service to increase scheduled speed. Therefore, running resistance of rolling stock becomes more important factor effects on the performance. Running resistance of rolling stock is the factor which is necessary for the performance or operation plan of rolling stock, and it's related to rolling friction, slip friction, drag force, gradient, acceleration, curvature, tunnel condition and so on. It is possible to be calculated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). However it is predicted by experimental equation from running resistance test because of the complex calculation and manifold variables. In this paper, studies about running resistance of rolling stock is introduced, and each term of experimental equation is studied through theoretical approximation. Also, running resistance of rolling stock is estimated by the result of running resistance test, and effects being related to friction, drag force, gradient is examined.
