When an incoming Global Positioning System (GPS) signal is acquired, pull-in search performs a finer search of the Doppler frequency of the incoming signal so that phase lock loop can be quickly stabilized and the receiver can produce an accurate pseudo-range measurement. However, increasing the accuracy of the Doppler frequency estimation often involves a higher computational cost for weaker GPS signals, which delays the position fix. In this paper, we show that the Doppler frequency detectable by a long coherent auto-correlation can be accurately estimated using a complex-weighted sum of consecutive short coherent auto-correlation outputs with a different Doppler frequency hypothesis, and by exploiting this we propose a noise resistant, low-cost and highly accurate Doppler frequency and phase estimation technique based on a reverse directional application of the finite rate of innovation (FRI) technique. We provide a performance and computational complexity analysis to show the feasibility of the proposed technique and compare the performance to conventional techniques using numerous Monte Carlo simulations.

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is considered as one of the solutions to cope with high mobility channel environments. It converts the time-varying channel to the near-constant channel response in the delay-Doppler domain. This modulation scheme also benefits from the diversity in two-dimensional modulation. According to recent researches, this method outperforms the conventional OFDM modulation, especially in high-speed channel conditions. In this paper, to investigate the performance of OTFS in a practical system, channel estimation in the delay-Doppler domain is compared with the conventional method in the time-frequency domain at different mobile speeds. Simulation results confirm that the delay-Doppler domain channel estimation brings a better performance compared to the conventional one under the same overhead rate.
A Stepped Frequency Radar(SFR) is a method that realizes high resolution range estimation by increasing the frequency of transmission pulses at regular intervals to generate a wide synthetic bandwidth. However, in the case of a moving target, accurate range estimation becomes difficult due to the range-Doppler coupling. In this paper, the process of high resolution range estimation by compensation of the range-Doppler coupling with estimated velocity of the moving target using the SFR waveform with Coherent Pulse Train(CPT) is analyzed and it was verified through simulation.
Extraction of ocean surface current velocity offers important physical oceanographic parameters especially on understanding ocean environment. Although Remote Sensing techniques were highly developed, the investigation of ocean surface current using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is not an easy task. This paper presents the results of ocean surface current observation using Doppler Centroid of ERS-1 SAR data obtained off the coast of Korea peninsula. We employed the concept, in which Doppler frequency shift and the ocean surface current are closely related, to evaluate ocean surface current. Moving targets cause Doppler frequency shift of the back scattered radar waves of SAR, thus the line-of-sight velocity component of the scatters can be evaluated. The Doppler frequency shift can be measured by estimating the difference between Doppler Centroid of raw SAR data and reference Doppler Centroid. Theoretically, the Doppler Centroid is zero; however, squinted antenna which is affected by several physical factors causes Doppler Centroid to be nonzero. The reference Doppler Centroid can be obtained from measurements of sensor trajectory, attitude and Earth model. The estimated Doppler Centroid was compensated by considering the accurate attitude estimation of ERS-1 SAR. We could verify the correspondence between the estimated ocean surface current and observed in-situ data in the error bound.

To increase system capacity in WCDMA receiver, the coherent detection is an essential technology for recovering transmitted symbols correctly. For coherent detection, an accurate and fast channel estimation is required. In next generation mobile communication system, high frequency carriers are used, and high data rate services are provided for subscribers having high mobility. In this communication environment, however, the rapidly-changing doppler frequency degrades the quality of the transmitted signal a lot. In WCDMA system, the channel estimation is conducted using pilot channel and/or pilot symbols which are known to both transmitter and receiver. Some existing channel estimation algorithms utilize these information quite well, but the performance of channel estimation gets very poor in a complicated fading channel distorted by the doppler effect. In this paper, we propose a new channel estimation algorithm combining an early-late doppler compensator so that the doppler effect and the fading characteristics are compensated at the same time. By computer simulation, the proposed algorithm proved to be a much more efficient channel estimation method in the fast fading channel, even at reasonably low Eb/No.

In wireless communication systems, a frequency offset exist at the received signal due to the transmitter-receiver oscillator mismatch and Doppler effect in mobile environments. Those offsets rotate the received signal's phase and degrade the receiver performance. Hence, estimation and compensation of the frequency offset is crucial at the receiver. This paper proposes a new frequency offset estimation technique based on partial correlation. The proposed method requires less computational complexity than that of the conventional method. In addition, since the proposed one can estimate a wide range of frequency offset without estimation accuracy loss, the application of the method is desirable for the communication environments that have a large frequency offset. In order to verify the performance of our proposed scheme, a series of computer simulations have been carried out and compared against those of the conventional method.

It is necessary to estimate the Doppler spectrum for each range cell for the extraction of useful information from the return echoes in radar systems used for the remote sending purpose. However, The conventional spectrum estimation method, FFT(Fast Fourier Transform), called the Doppler filter bank, causes the frequency resolution problem if the dwell time is relatively short. This short acquisition time also spreads the side lobe levels of return echoes further, resulting in difficulties for the discrimination of weak target signals included in relatively strong target echoes. Therefore, in this paper, the efficient Doppler spectrum estimation methods are compared and investigated through the parameter spectrum estimation in the time domain to overcome these problems.

For the remote sensing purpose, radar systems extract the target information, such as the magnitude of reflectivity and the velocity from the spectrum analysis of return echoes through the Doppler filter bank. This conventional spectrum estimation method, FFT(Fast fourier Transform) is widely used in most radar systems. However, the frequency resolution of return echoes can be seriously degraded in fast moving targets because of the short acquisition time. Since the high Doppler frequency resolution is important in the detection and tracking of fast moving targets, it can cause very unsatisfactory results. Therefore, in this paper, the parameter spectrum estimation method called AR(Autoregressive) spectrum estimation, is investigated to overcome these problems.

For OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) systems, 2-D MMSE (2-Dimensional Minimum Mean Square Error) channel estimation provides optimal performance in frequency/time selective fading channel environment. However, the 2-D MMSE channel estimation has high computational complexity due to the large matrix size, because the 2-D MMSE channel estimation considers time as well as frequency axis for channel estimation. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose a modified 2-D MMSE channel estimator which is based on 1-D MMSE channel estimation with weighted sum. Furthermore, we consider RMS delay spread and Doppler frequency estimation for 2-D MMSE channel estimation. We show that the proposed method can significantly reduce computational complexity as well as that it can perform close to 2-D MMSE channel estimation.

This paper studied a method of estimating target information using a radar in wireless communication. Position information on the target can be estimated angle, distance and velocity. The velocity information can be estimated since the Doppler frequency is changed in the moving target. The signal incident on the receiving array antenna is multiplied by the delay time and the reference signal to represent the output signal. This output signal is estimated by applying FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) after calculating signal correlation through correlation integrator. Since the output signal must be calculated within the correlator, it should be processed with the Dwell time. The correlation signal of the correlation integrator outside this Dwell time is indicated by the velocity measurement error. The FFT is applied to the signal that has passed through the correlated integrator in order to estimate the distance of the signal. The Doppler resolution must be improved because the FFT estimates target information using the Doppler information. The Doppler resolution decreases with increasing the integration time. The velocity information estimation should have no spread of the velocity. As a result of the simulation, there was no spread of the target velocity in this study.
