Some polycrystalline ferromagnetic mms are composed of continuously connected nanometer scale islands with random crystallite orientations. The nanometer perturbations of the mm introduce a large number of nearly degenerate local field configurations that are indistiguishable on a macroscopic scale. As a first step, this situation is modelled as a thin ferromagnetic disc coupled by exchange and dipole interactions to a homogeneous ferromagnetic plane, where the disc and plane have different easy axes. The model is solved to find the partial $N\acute{e}el$ domain walls that minimize the magnetic energy. The two solutions give a bistable configuration that, for appropriate geometries, provides an important microsopic ferromagnetic degree of freedom for the mm. These results are used to interpret recent measurements of exchange biased bilayer films.
Actual fire test under a laboratory and fire simulation by using computer are considered into main methodology in order to estimate and predict fire size of railway train. Even if practical fire size could be obtained from the full-model railway car test such as a large scale cone-calorimeter test, it is not always possible and realistic due to that expensive cost and attendant dangers could in no way be negligible. In this point of view, fire simulation analysis method based on the computational fluid dynamics could be proposed as an alternative and it seems to be also efficient and reasonable. However, simulation results have to be verified and validated in accordance with the proper procedure including comparing analysis with the actual fire test. In this paper, fire load and growth aspect was investigated through the room corner test (ISO 9705) for the mock-up model of the actual railway car. Then, it was compared with the output data derived from the simulation by using Pyrolysis Model of the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator, by NIST) for the exact same domain and condition corresponding with pre-performed room-corner test. This preliminary verified and validated fire modeling method could enhance the reliability of output data derived from the fire simulation under the similar domain and condition.
When exposed to uniform magnetic fields externally applied, paramagnetic particles acquire dipole moments and the induced moments interacting with each other lead to the formation of chainlike structures or clusters of particles aligned with the field direction. A direct simulation method, based on the Maxwell stress tensor and a fictitious domain method, is applied to solve flows with magnetic chains in simple shear flow. We assumed that the particles constituting the chains are paramagnetic, and inertia of both flow and magnetic particles is negligible. The numerical scheme enables us to take into account both hydrodynamic and magnetic interactions between particles in a fully coupled manner, enabling us to numerically visualize breakup and reformation of the chains by the combined effect of the external field and the shear flow. Simple shear flow with suspended magnetic chains is solved in a periodic domain for a given magnetic field. Dynamics of interacting magnetic chains is found to be significantly affected by a dimensionless parameter called the Mason number, the ratio of the viscous force to the magnetic force in the shear flow. The effect of particle area fraction on the chain dynamics is investigated as well.
The plant hormone auxin is involved in all stages of plant development. Aux/IAAs are the transcriptional repressors that bind to the Auxin Response Factors (ARFs) to regulate the gene expression upon auxin release. Aux/IAA have highly conserved C-terminal domains (domains III-IV) that mediate both homotypic and heterotypic interactions between Aux/IAA and ARF family proteins. Recent studies revealed that the conserved domains III-IV share a common ${\beta}$-grasp fold that oligomerizes in a front-to-back manner. In particular, Aux/IAA contains a mobile insert helix in the domain III-IV, whereas ARFs do not. Here, we investigated the dynamics of the insert helix using paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy. The insert helix exhibited fast motions in the ps-ns time scale from $^{15}N$ relaxation data, but the amplitude of the motion is likely limited to the local neighborhood. Our result suggests that the motion of the helix may have functional implications in protein-protein interactions for transcriptional regulations.
Human transmembrane proteins (hTMPs) are closely related to transport, channel formation, signaling, cell to cell interaction, so they are the crucial target of modern medicinal drugs. In order to study the structure and function of these hTMPs, it is important to prepare reasonable amounts of proteins. However, their preparation is seriously difficult and time-consuming due to insufficient yields and low solubility of hTMPs. We tried to produce large amounts of Syndecan-4 transmembrane domain (Syd4-TM) that is related to the healing wounds and tumor for a long time. In this study, we performed the structure determination of Syd4-TM combining the Polarity Index at Slanted Angle (PISA) wheel pattern analysis based on $^{15}N-^1H$ 2D SAMPI-4 solid-state NMR of expressed Syd4-TM and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation using Discovery Studio 3.1.
This study aims to investigate the behavioral characteristics of the LWSCR (lazy-wave steel catenary riser) for a turret-moored FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading) by using fully-coupled hull-mooring-riser dynamic simulation program in time domain. In particular, the effects of initial geometric profile on the global performance and structural behavior are investigated in depth to have an insight for optimal design. In this regard, a systematic parametric study with varying the initial curvature of sag and arch bend and initial position of touch down point (TDP) is conducted for 100-yr wind-wave-current (WWC) hurricane condition. The FPSO motions, riser dynamics, constituent structural stress results, accumulated fatigue damage of the LWSCR are presented and analyzed to draw a general trend of the relationship between the LWSCR geometric parameters and the resulting dynamic/structural performance. According to this study, the initial curvature of the sag and arch bend plays an important role in absorbing transferred platform motions, while the position of TDP mainly affects the change of static-stress level.
In this study, the dynamic interaction between an Arctic Spar and drifting level ice is examined in time domain using the newly developed ice-hull-mooring coupled dynamics program. The in-house program, CHARM3D, which is the hull-riser-mooring coupled dynamic simulator is extended by coupling with the open-source discrete element method (DEM) simulator, LIGGGHTS. In the LIGGGHTS module, the parallel-bonding method is implemented to model the level ice using an assembly of multiple bonded spherical particles. As a case study, a spread-moored Artic Spar platform, whose hull surface near waterline is the inverted conical shape, is chosen. To determine the breaking-related DEM parameter (the critical bonding strength), the four-point numerical bending test is used. A series of numerical simulations is systematically performed under the various ice conditions including ice drift velocity, flexural strength, and thickness. Then, the effects of these parameters on the ice force, platform motions, and mooring tensions are discussed. The simulations reveal various features of dynamic interactions between the drifting ice and moored platform for various ice conditions including the novel synchronous resonance at low ice speed. The newly developed simulator is promising and can repeatedly be used for the future design and analysis including ice-floater-mooring coupled dynamics.
In this study, we describe a method to analysis dynamic behavior of an offshore wind turbine in the frequency domain and expected effects of the method. An offshore wind turbine, which is composed of platform, tower, nacelle, hubs, and blades, can be considered as multibody systems. In general, the dynamic analysis of multibody systems are carried out in the time domain, because the equations of motion derived based on the multibody dynamics are generally nonlinear differential equations. However, analyzing the dynamic behavior in time domain takes longer than in frequency domain. In this study, therefore, we describe how to analysis the system multibody systems in the frequency domain. For the frequency domain analysis, the non-linear differential equations are linearized using total derivative and Taylor series expansions, and then the linearized equations are solved in time domain. This method was applied to analysis of double pendulum system for the verification of its effectiveness, and the equations of motion for the offshore wind turbine was derived with assuming that the wind turbine is rigid multibody systems. Using this method, the dynamic behavior analysis of the offshore wind turbine can be expected to take less time.

Herein, different concepts for domain wall propagation based on currents and fields that could potentially be used in magnetic data storage devices based on domains and domain walls are reviewed. By direct imaging, we show that vortex and transverse walls can be displaced using currents due to the spin transfer torque effect. For the case of field-induced wall motion, particular attention is paid to the influence of localized fields and local heating on the depinning and propagation of domain walls. Using an Au nanowire adjacent to a permalloy structure with a domain wall, the depinning field of the wall, when current pulses are injected into the Au nanowire, was studied. The current pulse drastically modified the depinning field, which depended on the interplay between the externally applied field direction and polarity of the current, leading subsequently to an Oersted field and heating of the permalloy at the interface with the Au wire. Placing the domain wall at various distances from the Au wire and studying different wall propagation directions, the range of Joule heating and Oersted field was determined; both effects could be separated. Approaches beyond conventional field- and current-induced wall displacement are briefly discussed.
We extended the measurable time scale of DNA dynamics to submicrosecond using a long-lifetime metal-ligand complex, $[Ru(phen)_2(dppz)]^{2+}$ (phen=1,10-phenanthroline, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuPD), which displays a mean lifetime near 350 ns. We partially characterized the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in calf thymus DNA from RuPD to nile blue (NB) using frequency-domain fluorometry with a high-intensity, blue light-emitting diode (LED) as the modulated light source. There was a significant overlap of the emission spectrum of the donor RuPD with the absorption spectrum of the acceptor NB. The F$\ddot{o}$rster distance ($R_0$) that was calculated from the spectral overlap was $33.4\;{\AA}$. We observed dramatic decreases in the steady-state fluorescence intensities of RuPD when the NB concentration was increased. The intensity decays of RuPD were matched the closest by a triple exponential decay. The mean decay time of RuPD in the absence of the acceptor NB was 350.7 ns. In a concentration-dependent manner, RuPD showed rapid intensity decay times upon adding NB. The mean decay time decreased to 184.6 ns at $100\;{\mu}M$ NB. The FRET efficiency values that are calculated from the mean decay times increased from 0.107 at $20\;{\mu}M$ NB to 0.474 at $100\;{\mu}M$ NB concentration. The use of FRET with a long-lifetime metal-ligand complex donor is expected to offer the opportunity to increase the information about the structure and dynamics of nucleic acids.
